Orchestras rarely tune at A 440. Some tune as high as 452! Bergonzi did a masterclass on this issue. Makes singing that much more difficult! Conductors like the bright sound, but they aren't singing!

i don't get her high notes...joan sutherland can do it...than again that is joan sutherland...but i can't judge i'm a baritone...this is way out of my territory.
i dont know what i meant in my comment...but your reply confuses me. i enjoyed this piece...i dont know what i would have found wrong with this over a year ago.
Yes, singers can't hear themselves the others do, and headphones can make it worse. Pitch problems require constant work....recording the voice and checking against a keyboard or tuning device can help. Getting a cold, or having allergies can make the vocal cords hard to control.....it's the same for all singers. Sometimes the audience doesnt understand this.
I'm a singer and I still don't understand it, precise pitch is something I've has since childhood and I can't comprehend not having it. not that I'm saying this to brag, but it just seems like people's brains work in vastly different ways and this effects singing. pitch problems aside, that voice, WOW!
The initial staccatti sounded a quarter tone flat.....then the first high D sounded a quarter tone sharp. Hard for me to get excited about a performance that begins this way. Maybe it wasn't her best night.
Alright, so...do you have perfect pitch? or what? Nobody sings perfectly in tune EVER, unless they are singing through an auto-tune plug-in through protools, and is a very artificial inhuman sound.
I am a singer and musician. I dont know what you mean by nobody sings in tune ever. I beg to differ. If you want a career you better sing in tune, and in the same key as the musical accompaniment. Every singer can be a little flat or sharp on a note from time to time, and it may not be noticed if it is very slight. In this performance the notes are a least a 1/4 tone off....thats hard on the ear, and a big miss.
Human beings can sing an A perfectly at 440. They can make any note perfectly on pitch. Some singers have perfect pitch.
The truth is the vibration often varies slightly above or below perfect pitch....SLIGHTLY, which means much less than a semi-tone, and not noticeable to the average human ear. That is not case in this performance...the pitch is well off.
It is a scientific fact that humans just can't sing an A 440, why? because even when one hits a note it is never like a straight line but tiny little small vibrations, only a synthesizer can do that. But yeah, is not perfectly in tune...but is not like this lady is singing a flat B when she's supposed to be doing a D, she's just slightly sharp and slightly under pitch.
Yes, she is slightly over and under, which is a problem for singers if it can be detected by the audience. 'A' 440 IS a vibration.
All notes are vibrations, so of course of the frequency must vary slightly...or it wouldn't be vibration....right? Many singers, including myself, have to work hard on pitch-training ....to hear when the pitch is off. She may need more pitch-training.. to hear
the problem. To improve, all singers must take good criticism....it's part of being a singer.
But...only a sine wave can be "perfectly tuned", know what I'm saying? a signal without harmonic content, just pitch, like the tone they put on for emergency broadcast.
Anyways, sometimes is a physical issue that makes someone go shakey bakey pitch wise like uncontrolled breathing or sometimes is an inner ear issue...like, I don't often go out of tune when singing live, but recording in studio with headphones is rather hard for me and have to work harder at it.
YAWN YAWN YAWN. Perfect this perfect that. I am a singer and a musician BLAH BLAH BLAH. The next time you are on stage in costume singing anything and people actually applaud let us know and we will listen to your ridiculous comments.
What a pity we don't have a video document of Sutherland's Esclarmonde...superior to this version( a bit rough sound and sreamy at the top...inexact pitch)....Good though!
I saw the opera at the MET with Sutherland. I found some of the music tiresome but Sutherland was magnificent. It was one of her very favorite roles. This performance is exciting too, but Sutherland was even better.

I mean PERFECTLY TUNED, nobody sings an A perfectly tuned to 440 unless you are a synthesizer, is all relatives.
