In 1962 the Cuban Missile crisis was underway. I was in 1st grade. We lived in Palo Alto (Silicon Valley) less than a mile from Moffett Field. Moffett was the base for the P3 Orion "Sub Hunters" and the Submarine Communication array for the Pacific Fleet. We did Duck and Cover drills weekly at the elementary schools and had heavy drapery to shield from flash and glass fragments. In the 50's and 60's this stuff was REAL! Today's young people can't really understand... It's Funny Now though!
@randy95023 Nah I can understand it given the fear and the paranoia surrounding The Cold War era. What sticks out to me the most is how the methods endorsed in this film would have done little to protect people back then. They were talking about being shielded from debris but the bigger concern would've been the massive casualties due to direct exposure to the blast and the radiation fallout afterwards. Shelters were a good idea but would've only worked if there was a warning.
@jldraw Despite ignorance being bliss, the government could never simply say..."your fucked" they had to put people into the illusion that they could survive, that there was hope. They had to lie about the length of time radiation of such a magnitude took to clear, how can you say "radiation will take over 1000yrs to clear, there will be no hope for civilisation let alone plant life to ever flourish again...how do you tell people you love and care for and you're friends that? its better to lie.
@dream6cold6code6 exactly! Given the circumstances and that we were just coming out of an age of war, they really didn't have any choice but to do what they did.
In my neighborhood some of the buildings have those old fashioned yellow "Fallout Shelter" signs still on them. But now the fallout shelters in the basement are just used for storage lockers. lol
These guys doing an internet show called Mystery Fandom Theater 3000 did this short. While their show is a great tribute to MST3K and is quite funny.... I have to say your riff on this short was funnier.
De government knew this duck and cover nonsense was bunk. Now we make fun of it. I wonder if future people are making fun of us and all of our post 9/11 security precautions.
Am I crazy or was Hitler the third guy to slide down the fire station pole? Great short, lots of funny lines as usual. It was nice to finally be able to see it.
"You want your skeleton to be discovered in the goofiest position possible."
I never thought I'd laugh so hard at propaganda. Thanks for making the precious moments before the Reds obliterate us and everyone we love even funnier, Josh.
admittedly, if you were far enough from the center of the explosion duck and cover would have some merit, because the shockwave would have roughly the same effect as an earthquake. but really, the short was just to inspire a constant butt-puckering fear in the US public. Thanks, Reggie the Special Needs Turtle!
wow, because a firework is obviously the equivalent of a 100 megaton atomic weapon. Propaganda is so wonderfully naive and not as assuring as it's meant to be

3:25 not only can it burn you to a crisp but it can give you cancer so you die eventually anyway. It's a no win situation.

Thank you, Josh! It's great to see this classic riff once again. In fact, it was this one that got me into the Fun with Shorts series.

yes, I'm sure a cloth jacket or coat would protect you from an atomic bomb and radiation that will last the next 10,000 yrs.
