Linda Ronstadt recorded Costello's songs in the late 70s putting him on the rock & pop charts.
Elvis thanked her by saying the only bad thing about his songs was that Ronstadt sang them. He went on to call Ray Charles a whore.
Alternative music fans & critics applauded Costello's "purist" remarks.
Ronstadt left rock & pop music and recorded uncommercial Mexican, folk & Cuban music.
"Purist" Costello went on to record albums with commercial pop stars Hall & Oates and Paul McCartney.

Without a doubt, I am sure it was awesome. I saw him back in 1981 or 82 at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta along with the attractions.the Squeeze opened for him.
We hung a sheet over the balcony in the seats that read " Declan McManus Lives" Good times
