It's true the threads of Brad as a sideman compared to his solo stuff. I was soooo impressed when I heard him with Joshua, so I looked through his solo stuff later, and never quite consistently found that spark again. So I've never really been able to acquire the Mehldau taste. But here I see again that nice playing that originally inspired me. . . .

too bad brad isn't playing like this anymore. he didn't become the "most influential jazz musician of his generation" by playing with jeff ballard, that's for sure.
brad mehldau fucking blows my mind. Not only are his technique, time, and rhythmic feel completely natural and impeccable, but his personal and original uses of incredibly deep harmonic impositions and rhythmic subdivisions, plus his huge encyclopedia of creative concepts, which often utilize his incredible left hand, truly justify him as an utter musical genius. That all being said, this was filmed at the beginning of his career. He is so awesome.
Wonder if he thinks as highly about his playing as you do about it. I dont mean anything by it, but your assesment is so incredible and shining, that I am suspicious it might overpower the objective truth of the man's abilities, or at least distort it a little. At any rate, Im sure you would probably make Mr. Mehldau blush just a bit if you gave him this evaluation.
Seeing this reminds us that you can know all the scales and arpeggios in the world and be all up on the most sophisticated Coltrane harmonic s*** but if you don't have the rhythm, if you're not subdividing every single part of every beat and are able switch between the triplet and sixteenth feel and go over the bar line, it's not going to sparkle like this. Mehldau, in a way, represents a new paradigm for jazz.

led zeppelin is the greatest band ever. in terms of musicality, these guys are far superior to zeppelin. everything zeppelin does is pentatonic. but zeppelin is still awesome
Why the fuck are people comparing bands of completely different genres? It's retarded, Led Zeppelin and these guys cannot be compared due to the genre difference, and subsequently, there is far too much aural subjectivism involved to make a fair comparison if they were of the same genre.
you don't listen to jazz, as you listen to rock, this is not the same thing. In led zep, you listen to the composition, it's "great as a major I IV V", whereas jazz is "good as a IIm7b5 V7#5 Im7add9". Do you got it ? Both are good, pleasant, but it's not the kind of music. Music hasn't to be complicated to be good, but it can be.
Yo man this group is full of all the giants of jazz and their instruments.every last one these niggas are beasts! And mehldau is my boy with his sick hands now but back in the 90's he was so killing and could swing real hard
Anyone have any idea what Mehldau is up to at about 0:44?

If Jeff Ballard is good enough for Chick Corea, he's good enough for Brad Mehldau.

I would agree led zeppelin is the greatest "rock" band ever for its musicallity.
