If you lie on the floor the impact might damage your upper body or head, which is more likely to lead to death or serious injury (where you'll become a vegetable in best scenario). I know a friend that hgad this accident. She was standing up but she hurt her knee really bad. The doctor said that if she was laying down she would have died. Elevators usually have 6-8 ropes on the elavator. Each rope by itself can hold more than 25% of the maximum weight limit of the elavator. If the rope is cut by terrorists, you have countless brakes to stop the elavator. All of those brakes have back-up brakes. If they fail, there are other brakes that use gravity to stop the elavator. The faster the elevator is falling, the harder the brakes stop it. That clip is shot from a movie in a ship that was UPSIDE DOWN. Elevators don't usually do that.

This guy is full of it. I work for an elevator company in Miami Florida. It is almost impossible to have an elevator completely free fall. There are plenty of safety devices for this. First you have the elevator brake located on the motor. If that fails there is an emergency brake. If that fails u have a governor. Which trips and causes elevator brake to activate. Elevator brakes work with gravity. The are wedge brakes on the rail. So the faster or heavier the elevator the more the brakes are g

First of all, the likelihood of a traction "roped" elevator losing control in the "down" direction is HIGHLY unlikely. You see, the counterweights offset the weight of the car

by 42%. If control is lost, the cab goes UP!! Additionally, there are two types of "brakes". One that stops and holds the car at floor level, and an "emergency" brake that functions mechanically in the down overspeed direction. Setting mechanical "wedges" onto the guiderails preventing a down freefall.

Well in my opinion, it helps and thus wouldn't crush or kill you instantly. You'll break some bones for sure and still have the 70% chance of surviving a short crash...say, maybe from the 15th fall downwards. BTW...Brakes do work, but only dust, dirt and grime is the culprit. If the brakes failed to work, then......pray to God.

Least of all, proper maintainence is the key factor for safer elevator rides.
