which is actually what you would be doing by buying a more powerful psu. Just because its 20000000000 watts dosent mean it runs at full load all the time. Its much more efficient than buying a 600 watt psu and running it at full load all day.
Also many respectable review sites have said that bigger PSU are still going to use more power than a smaller one even at the same power requirements. Needs 650W uses 750W PSU is more efficient than 650W using a 1000W.
I also doubt anyone is going to come close to that 1600W, unless they are running some massive server.
PSU's have different power ratings at different loads. Its usually about 60% load. Sooo loading 650 watts onto a 750 watt powersupply is not only going to give you crap power and a LOT of heat, its going to give you poor efficiency. Oh and a shorter life for the psu. Caps age faster at higher loads.
Actually most well branded PSU are around 80% efficient. Why would it give you dirty power and produce a lot of heat? 5-10% head room is more than enough (not overclock crazy). Only this I agree on is the lifespan, of course. (Less stress = longer life)
"4, 5870's and a very overclocked cpu will get you close to peak efficiency on a 1600 under load."
Going back to the need vs want. Everyone knows that scaling on 3 cards, let alone on 4 is poor performance improvement.
its not about need.... do you need to race down a runway at 3000000000000000000 miles per hour in a useless car that you cant use anywhere else. Its a hobby. Its fun. And they are branded as 80% efficient at optimal load... not across all loads.
Though I guess it's more about having the most power inefficient system that costs the most to purchase and run. All in the name of increasing the user's e-penis.

Yea I know and that is why I mentioned it.
People are getting ridiculous when it comes to wanting more and more performance that you simply do not need.
