@brit55xed Actually no. A datu would be what you'd translate into english as "prince" or into german as "fuerst". These guys are alive and still kicking in Indonesia, Malaysia and Southern Philippines. In the case of Malaysia they are the ones ruling the country.

Absolutely.

And we do not make comedy out of the art. We teach it as a martial art, that teaches speed, reaction, reflexes timing and other attributes as well as self-defense. A slogan like "You can kill with this art very effectively" does not attract the kind of people, we would like to have in our Arnis classes. At least not here in Central Europe.

@mushugai I see this as a promotional choreography. i mean, it's like in a Jackie Chan movie. Supposed to entertain people. I mean, if you watch those action movies all you see are choreographies. And quite often they're fun to look at, right? XD

The old name of this flow drill is originally called "CORRIDAS" before GM Presas called this as "Tapi-tapi" which can be translated into Tap and Trap. There are higher level of this kind of flow drill that GM Presas, Ernesto and Roberto are not using or teaching. I have been doing it since the early 1960's.

That is pre-arranged sparring that the MODERNIST call "Tapi-tapi". In a real fight it would look very much different. It would be off timing, messy and brutal. These moves are done just for shows. "Dili man ina sila Americano. Mga Aleman na sila nga tuntuhan" Tan-awa bala ang ti-il ka wa gid sliding ug likaw.

This kind of training is taught in many different FMA systems, also from many Filipino Grandmasters under different names.

You are right, it is called "Tapi-Tapi" (see in the title of this clip.  It is called Tapi-Tapi, because it is not free fight.

Free fight is different.

@SensieMax Oo, tama ka. choreo nga lang to. Kaso, promo lang to, di ba? Kung maggaganon ka, xempre naman gusto mong ipakita sa mga nanonood ang mga pinakaastig mong moves. So, I think it's ok. Besides, these kind of exercises teach you what to do if an attack XYZ is coming at you.

Remy actually established a Datu rank [outside of Black belt] They were meant to be leaders in Modern Arnis and to spread it to the world. Not all have but Dieter is a great example

@ryukyuprime Thing is, Dieter Knüttel is the only "Datu" of his kind. And I don't know, but what would the actual Datus in SEA say if they found out that some non-royal person calls himself that way?

@GaolisVideoLog Prof Remy Preses, founder of Modern Arnis,who passed away in 2001, 'promotted' several of his students [7 I think] to the rank/title of datu. His stated intent was to make them ambassadors of Arnis and to share the art. To my knowledge Datu Dieter is the only Europeon the others are all american.

@ryukyuprime Like who? Dieter Knuettel isn't the highest ranked Presas style student in Germany but he is the only one calling himself Datu. E.g. Wolfgang Scchnur and or Carlos Pulanco are two people in Germany who're higher ranked than he is. They don't call themselves Datu.

2nd thing would be, who is Remy Presas to announce someone a Datu? Think about it, actual Datus are still reigning in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. That's spitting on culture right there.

@alleny2 I find it disrespectful towards those people who actually are royalties in Southeast Asia. Calling someone Datu... And Dieter Knüttel is the only Datu in Arnis I've ever heard of. And I'm saying this even though I am not a fan of monarchies. I just mean that it sounds like a really bad joke. Probably was.

I received the Datu title June 1st 1996 from directly from Grandmaster Remy Presas.

I perfectly know about the Datu title and the use of it in the Philippines and If you have problems with that, sorry, your problems.
