My university brass ensemble (Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts) just had a concert with Allen, and that first cadenza in the Carnival of Venice always gets me weak at the knees. Even better, I have another concert with him in Bunbury (Western Australia) this Sunday. He's now my favourite Yank/Trumpet player.
Don't forget to site the composer Giovanni Bottesini. Del Staigers was the arranger. Bottesini wrote the Opera, and wrote a variation of it for the Double Bass (standup) his instrument. One of the greatest bassist of all time. Good to give credit where credit is due.
I had a wonderful conversation with him at the intermission of one of these concerts.
He's also a terrific entertainer. At one point, he was playing trumpet with 1 hand, then switched hands while playing and NEVER missed a note or beat. Then there was the part where he turned his trumpet upside-down during this performance. Definitely one of the highlights of my player career playing with him!
I play principal oboe with the TSO. This was the second time we've had Vizzutti as guest soloist. Not only is he one of the greatest trumpet players on earth, but he's also one of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet.
i just met this guy today at the morris jazz festival in minnesota. i was lead trumpet on a jazz band he was judging, and he came up and asked me to play this and that for him like g, a flat concert and try to immitate him on certain parts. he is fucking amazing.
I enjoyed your video of this. It would have been great if you had zoomed in once in a while, especially the upside down part. Closeups are nice. I am the opposite and tend to overuse the zoom.
I would have zoomed in, but i was using my sony point and shoot and once you start recording it doesnt let you zoom in. I also would have zoomed in to start off but i didn't want the whole thing to be shaky.
Thank you very much for your prompt reply. When I was young I used to play the fife in a drum, fife and bugle corps, and that was the "graduation piece". Again, muchisimas gracias. Herman Ruiz

Allen demonstrated this for us during the band festival at University of Washington. It was pretty cool

in my opinion, the canadian brass (fredrick mills trumpet feature) is better, but allen has him at a lot of other points in playing as well

Both the beginning and the part at 4:50 are around 14 notes per second... I actually laughed at how ridiculously insane that is. xDDD
Abe27342 2 years ago
You're exaggerating when you say per second. Lol

Wow, I saw him in person many years ago and heard him, but I never saw him do the end part upside down. He must have got bored with super C's.

Why would you not want to be trumpet? This is one of the best songs ever written to solo in.
crsereda 3 years ago 4
Probably because it's so intimidating. I just started reading the Arbans version and... wow
DPCerberusBlaze 2 years ago
Lol...Look at Arbans compared to Allens other, harder version of Carnival. Literally called Carnival Of Venus.
Arbans is so...it's like happy birthday compared to Allens version lol.

Well, the best known arrangement is in the Arban Cornet Method, so you're not wrong there :P

Thanks for the info, I've been trying to find out who really wrote the Carnival of Venice.
pedroesteban86 4 years ago
I wrote it!
I also invented the wheel, fire, time, and the concept of zero, as well as morality, religion, government, love, and forensic science.
I did all this between teaching music lessons!!!
