I used to think that way, when I was mad about Chopin, I always listened to Chopin, and knew every piece of his. He was a excellent at writing for the piano, but
These days, I think Hummel, Mozart were greater, not many composers were able to combine orchestral technique with excellent piano writing as could Hummel, Mozart, Beethoven. Chopin once said they were the "masters of us all".
Listen to Mozart's 24th concerto, you'll know what I mean.
On his deathbed, Chopin said to his friends, "Play something for me together and think of me while I listen to you." When his friend Franchomme then said, "Yes, we will play your sonatas," Chopin exclaimed, "Oh no, not mine. Play for me the true music -- that of Mozart."
@v21e "Simplicity is the final achievement. After one has played a vast quantity of notes and more notes, it is simplicity that emerges as the crowning reward of art." (Fryderyk Chopin). Chopin is the only composer I can listen to from beginning to end of a piece without being bored or nerved. Mozart has written too much and often only the 2nd mov. of a concert is real great, the rest ist just nice. Chopin loved 1st JSBach and also Mozart - Chopin is heaven...Franchomme was Mozart fan, you see !
@v21e Why should Chopin want to listen to a piece of his own, only he could play perfectly, anyway ?
He also wanted to please Franchomme, Chopin was a nice person. Bach is the basis, Mozart is the friskiness, Chopin is just heaven. Do you believe in incarnation and the opportunity to improve your skills in every incarnation ? Just check the birth and death-day of these people. It´s just a hunch, not a proof !
@junghesse "Chopin was a nice person. Bach is the basis, Mozart is the friskiness, Chopin is just heaven." who said? you? while Chopin himself said Mozart made true music. whom should I believe?
@v21e Since I especially love piano, I prefer Chopin above all, yes and Chopin especially loved Bach and also Mozart - but both of them Mozart and Chopin learned so much from Bach (Mozart also from his son when he was in London and once Mozart was in Leipzig and they had to show him all of Bach´s oevre and made some copies ,) I do not like Mozart´s Requiem - but it´s a matter of taste. The big differnce betw Moz and Chop is, I can imagine the compositions of Moz, but I can not the ones of Chopin
@junghesse " I can imagine the compositions of Moz, but I can not the ones of Chopin" It's ridiculous that ppl always think that Mozart was too easy, too simple, we should adore Beethoven, Brahms or someone else. don't get me wrong I adore everyone of them include your favorite chopin but every time somebody put their own taste to judge who better. It 's really ridiculous. u said u especially love piano but I dont know who s your favorite pianist so you know someone name Artur Schnabel?
@v21e But there are very important influences no one talks about. Just listen to Johann Nepomuk Hummel (Chopin played a lot Hummel in his youth) and you will get to know one of his biggest influences. Hummel was a pupil of Mozart ;) Yeah and it´s true, maybe Mozart was one of the few who´d put "simplicity as the final achievement (Chopin)" into practice - Mozart´s beautiful.
@junghesse The sonatas of Mozart are unique: too easy for children, too difficult for adults. Children are given Mozart to play because of the quantity of notes; grown ups avoid him because of the quality of notes. (Artur Schnabel)
@junghesse My point is Chopin is immortal, he is truly great master but while Chopin himself accepted Mozart was better than him that didn't make him useless or lower himself, he is great and he always be. but irony and sadly some of his fan can't accept that and that is a bottom line.
@bialaseek I do not quite understand what t´s all about, of course he said Mozart is true music, but he did not say Moozart is the only one. Franchomme was a big Mozart fan and a friend of Chopin, so their main subject was talking about Mozart. It is known Chopin played first and foremost Moscheles, Weber and HUMMEL.He said that in sentimental moment talking to a Mozart fan. In the end the biggest and only influence was JS Bach. "We are all only children compared to Bach (Beethoven?!)
@bialaseek The biggest difference between Chopin and the rest (Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Liszt etc.) is he fact Chopin did not have to practise a lot - not even 2 h / day sometimes for months not at all. Liszt had to practise about 14 h a day !! even during a trip he had a keyboard. Beethoven even 25h a day ;) Chopin was a miracle not not just due to that, but I think almost everyone has left some good work, even Schubert ! just yesterday I listened to his amazing serenade !
best version ever of this piece!

Chopin would disagree. Mozart was one of the only two composers he idolized, the other being JS Bach.
