Also in case anyone forgets between season one and two they must have been visited by some kind of makeover aliens who gave them some spiffy new jackets, redesigned the Moonbase interior and the inside of the eagles and replaced some of the crew.
"Drifting between galaxy's" as much as I kind of liked this show it did really put a strain on the suspension of belief maxim. The moon is going so fast that after 877 days (should be space 2002 by now but that's another issue :-)) yet when they pass a planet or a derelict spaceship they can spend a few days having a looksee before shooting of to the next galaxy. so does the moon speed up? or slow down? or have some kind of quirky space drive?
Awesome! Shitty special effects awful acting great plot pretty much everything else sucked. Still frigging awesome! The one episode I remember most. Whoever wrote this script deserves an award for making a memorable situation/monster. Kudo's for the director for accidentally skipping his meds this day.
Well, i'm going against my reply of tmc359's comment. The intercoms are so amazing they call the exact person you want to talk with, without any kind of code or number. Amazing stuff.
The other thing about this story is that it does raise the possibility that there may indeed be life forms out there that do NOT register on any systems that we have and if that is the case then any hapless Astronaut or space explorer may indeed find him, her or it'self in the same horrible grizzly predicament as the fictitious Tony Chilinni & his crew did in this episode?
I saw this episode when I was 7 years old and it gave me nightmares! Season 1 of Space 1999 was by far the best! The stories were intelligent, provocative and at times down right frightening. Then the American division of ITC stepped in and took over the writing from the UK and out went great stories & episodes and in came groovy Moon base Alpha of love, cheesy monsters, bad acting and horrible stories! At least Helena Russell had a great hair do in season 2.
I agree I saw this when I was 6 or 7 years old and had quite abit of difficulty sleeping for a while after watching it lol. Even to this day it still gives me the creeps. Don't you love how memories like this stay with us threw the years???
Then came season 2 with Mya and along with her character came lame monsters and even lamer stories!!!
Like others said I remember having nightmares after this episode, but when I watch it now the monster portions really are very short yet those are the only parts I remembered!
@tmc359 -- a technical breakthrough called "not enough money in the production budget to film the space crew going EVA from the Ultra Probe over to the alien vessel".
@tmc359 The real question is: who cares? It's Space:1999. Bellbottoms were the trend of the future back then. I sorta missed out on that trend at the end of the century ;)
Love love love watching these episodes. As a kid that monster scared the living hell out of me- great stuff!!
As far as trying to retrieve the alien tech there, I can see why they wouldn't immediately tow any of the ships back home. Even just one critter like that loose on Alpha would ruin their whole day.
I was a huge fan of this show when I was a kid. Not going to finish watching this episode though...35 years later and it's still too scary! Glad the episodes are here though...thanks!
I love this show. Scared the living bejesus out of me when I was a kid. However, I must point out that the Alphans found a bunch of interstellar vehicles, the technology of which could have brought them back to Earth, and THEY FREAKING LEFT IT THERE. If you can dock with it, you can tow it, people. FAIL
@dasclemhaus They couldn't be sure that the monster was really dead -- or that there weren't more than one. Thus, they couldn't dare tow back any of the ships if it meant running the risk of bringing back the monster! It's could hunt down everyone on Alpha within days!
@Ranillon, the thing had an enormous, glowing, beach-ball sized target in the middle of its face, and Alpha apparently had axes all over the place. Dead, undead, the thing would get fed-up with being blinded all the time. So, again, with feeling, TOW THE ****ING ALIEN SPACECRAFT.
@dasclemhaus You can't assume that the axes do more than drive it away for a little while. You sure are eager to risk the lives of everyone on Alpha! Or, do you just assume you are never wrong?
@Ranillon Look, driving it away is the object of the exercise. I'm eager to risk the lives of everyone on Alpha? Have you ever done a "Space: 1999" body-count? They died like drunk moths in arc-welding shed! The show was cancelled because they didn't have enough cast left for a third season! Koening = Bligh! BAH!
I read on a fansite once that the creature's legs were actually air hoses that would wildly fly around when air was pumped through them. Unfortunately, though, there was rumor it was trashed and scene in the trash dumpster of the studio. Still is one of my favorite episodes. :)
I am glad to have found this again. I remember it from childhood and thinking how great this episode was. It has lost none of its impact even to this day.

A SF tale as it might have been told by HP Lovecraft. Just disregard the physics and astronomical faux-pas and it's a very chilling story. Visual blooper also appears when the probe ship first encounters the graveyard of spaceships. You can clearly see an image of the probe ship already docked on the alien derelict before it even docks.
scared the hell out of me when i first saw this in the 70s. Was excited when they got to the ship graveyard thought we would see alot of new alien tech. now a horror show...lol....thanks for the upload.
sorta funny how the video intercom system is in black and white. I never noticed back in the day when I was viewing this a child, because I was watching it on a black and white TV LOL
It would have been nice to have continuity, though one could argue that they had long ago picked up Maya, and Bergman just hadn't gotten around to dying yet.
lol they screw up in the story, here they are 877 days since departure from earth and int the season 2 episode when they encounter the telepathic rock in the episode "all that glitters" they are only 535 days away :P
This was my all time favourite Space 1999 episode. Sort of like a 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea in space thriller involving a giant squid like monster.
@chriswales19 ... I agree. The flight/music is effective for those long voyages in deep space. Nicely borrowed from a classic film sci-fi film ... and you all know which film I'm refering to.
I hope the new series will make an update of this episode when it airs...bring it on Space 2099!!!

The show really is a Hammer style Giallo horror show. This episode is an absolute classic.

After everything she has already seen Helena still cannot believe this guy's story? Her character comes across as extremely naive.
Loved this as a kid, but the more I watch these the more I realize they made some really dumb decisions out there.

In my experience, if you ask people who watched Space: 1999 what they remember best, the answers are:
Seasons 1 & 2 together: the Eagle spacecraft
Season 2: Maya's makeup
Season 1: This episode's monster
