@andersforfang They will probably lift and sit in the hole on an angle....also fall out when you remove strings. Depending on the exact type of tuners you can get conversion bushings for the oversized hole. -Billy
I just gave Kluson class style tuners to a guitar tech to install on a mighty mitew replacement neck and he said I need to order new tuners as they will not mount correctly. Cool video.
Great video. Could I put these classic style tuners on my American Deluxe Stratocaster without any problems? I am referring to tuning issues. The stock Schallers are staggered.
@ykcor1138 I think that the actual holes in the headstock are too big and will require conversion bushings which are over-sized. You may need to add a string tree or two as well. -Billy
I have a 2005 Gibson Les Paul Standard and it has Grover tuners with the whole screw in method. I'd like to replace them with the tulip tipped Kluson tuners to make it look a little more vintage. Does that require these steps you did in both videos or will both tuners be the same size?
yes billy i have another question, the screw holes fits all the same or are different? cause i need to replace the tuners to my eko LP that was made in italy in the 80's I think,so I don't know if every 3+3 tuner fits it.
I believe that the screw holes will be different. You may have to drill unfortunately... Be careful drilling. Use the same methods that I show in the video. And by all means ask me as many questions as you like!!! -Billy
Hey...thank you very much!!! I'm glad I could help. Please let me know if you have any questions or if you have a video in mind you would like to see!! -Billy
on tuners where there's also a nut on the front side of the pegboard, how tight do you have to put those? Finger tight or do I snug them up with a wrench? I don't want over compress the pegboard or anything.
Snug them with a wrench. Just like you said don't go too tight or they will compress the headstock and make sort of "dents". Just go snug and that's all. Hope this helps you! -Billy
Billy, how do I know what size bit to use if my old holes dont line up?Is there a common size for the job? Should I fill my old holes if u cant see them or leave em alone?
There is not a common size to my knowledge. I think I used a #42 bit. I would get a small scrap piece of wood and try a few bits and see which one works with the screws you have. You do not have to fill the holes especially if you do not see them. You can drop some lacquer or similar into the holes to prevent moisture getting into the wood however. Let me know how it goes!! -Billy
You may split the headstock, break the head off the screw or slip off the screw with the screwdriver and chip the headstock. I highly recommend drilling a small pilot hole like in the video. Please feel free to ask more questions!! I am happy to help you out. -Billy
This is a great video. Thank you very much. I'm right at this stage in my partscaster build and I'm grateful to have such terrific advice. Much appreciated! Cheers!
Cool! I'm so glad I could help. If you have any more questions please feel free to contact me. I am happy to help!! What kind of guitar is it?? -Billy
It's going to be a hybrid of sorts. A Jazzmaster body with Telecaster neck/bridge/controls/pups (Jazzcaster? Telemaster?) Hopefully she turns out, it's an awesome process. Thanks for the help, I'm grateful for the opportunity to ask you questions.
That is a great question and I have a technique that works very well. I will be shootong another round of videos and will include that one. In this video the neck was brand new so no bushing removal necessary. Thanks!!
I wasn't sure if I needed to pre drill since the screws are so tiny. Thanks for that vid.

These two videos on how to install vintage tuners on a new headstock saved me from turning a new neck into firewood! Many thanks for the help Billy.

i bought tuners for a mighty mite neck and the bushings slide right through the holes and are a little bit loose, would they still work?

Informative, but way too long and rambling. You could show one screw going in, and edit out the others.

just asking how much does it usually cost for a whole set tuners installation service??
afnan789 2 years ago
I would say it costs about $45 to install tuners plus the price of having the guitar set up.

What tool do you use to remove the old bushings? They must be hard to extract if they are in their snug?
musicmatty67 2 years ago
You can account for the tuner baseplate but drilling a little deeper never hurt anyone. ;)
300guitars 3 years ago
Shouldn't you account for the tuner baseplate when measuring drill-bit depth on the screw...?
