I honestly don't think Carmelita is using drugs mainly because when she ran 10.64 VCB didn't seem to far behind her and neither did the rest of the field. Point is now that's she's slayed the Jamaicans (Kerron, Shelly-Ann) people want to say she's using drugs? That's ignorant and unfair, no one has any proof, she never tested positive, people need to give it up.
She ran a 10.61 in the trials final to make it through with ashford and torrence coming in 2nd and 3rd. That 10.61 was not wind-aided because her time was never modified after that. It stayed as it ws
Even if flo jo's 10.49 was wind aided. She then ran a 10.54 at Seoul. So even if you take that record away due to wind. She'll still be the world record holder. Next up is Marion Jones with a 10.65. Despite her recent confession to being doped up at Sydney and thereafter, she ran 10.65 prior to Sydney in 1998. So that time will still stand. I'm not sure about Jeter though. Guess we will have to wait and see what happens.
Perec's trainer was Koch's husband so if Koch was dirty then so was she. Anyway back onto Felix, yes she can definitely get quicker . And if I'm honest then i definitely believe that either Felix or Richards will breaks Kochs record soon. After seeing what Usain Bolt has been doing recently I don't think that 47.60 is unreachable and actually nor does Sanya Richards she reckons its beatable. Good luck to her I say
how does a runner who specializes in the 400m (shericka williams) get beat by a 200m runner who just does it for practice? that shows the versatility and strength in allyson felix!!
It just goes to show you how juiced up those East Germans were in the 80's. Any time around 49.60 to 50 flat is considered fast. Just take a look at Marita Koch's 400 from 1985. She may have been juiced, but it's just incredible to see a human being run like that.
you can't compare the two. when koch set that record she was already a master at the event with 10 years experience up her belt. Felix is still learning this event. So with another 8 plus years she get quicker. Like Perec & Freeman did. Started out running 51 flats then lowered their times to the mid to 48. Allyson stillhas time on her side and is already running sub 50's which is similar to how koch started at her age. with experience. Give Aliyson a chance. She'll get quicker.
Oh I agree, she'll get faster; but I don't see her making the drastic improvement Koch did. She went from running in the mid 49's when she was 24 to the low 48's in about 2 years.
She was definitely on something, but probably nothing close to what she was taking in 1985 when she ran that ridiculous time.
In my opinion, Perec has the real world record. You can't possibly count that Czech lady's and Koch's records. They're just in another stratosphere.
No thats not true. There is nothing drastic about Kochs improvement. The one thing you can say about Koch is that she had a steady improvement. 77 she was running 49, 78 high 48, 79 mid 48's, 80 mid 48', 81 mid 48, 82 low 48, 83 low 48, 84 low 48. 85 47.60. There was nothing drastic about her progress. Which is why when she broke that record nobody was surprised because we could all see it coming. Unlike Flo Jo that was definely drastic. However if you consider koch dirty then perec is too,
Sonya Richards ran a what, a 49. 75 at the Worlds this year. She's the best in the world, but do you really see her improving by a full second? Much less 2 seconds.
When Koch ran that 47.60, she took a third of a second off the world record. She wasn't even ranked number 1 in the world at the time. So her putting up 47.60 was pretty shocking.
I've spoken to an old Australian guy that was there that day and he said people in the crowd were stunned at speed in which Koch was running.
Well its possible. AT the european championships in 1990 Perec ran a 50.62 then a year later at the olympics she ran 48.85 so its not unheard of. Falliat Ogunkoya at the 95 worldchampionships ran a pb at the time 50.92 then at the olympics a year later ran 49.10. Thats almost two seconds. Its very common in longer distances like the 400. Look at Irina Privalova from being outside the top ten ranking before 2000 for hurdles then makes the rank 1 seed at sydney.
In Kochs career she broke the world record 16 times. 14 of which were her own records. She was always breaking records. So I maintain what i said before. It was no suprise that she broke another one. Anyway lets get back to Richards. She ran a 49.75 this year but her PB is 48.70 which is a second quicker. She has about 6 years left in the sport and she's not even in her prime yet so she can definitley improve on her 48.70. Felix in my op is still the number 1seed. 49.62 without training is BIG!
I understand what you're saying, but there's a reason why that record hasn't been approached in almost 25 years. Perec was still a half a second off.
There is no runner today capable of breaking that record. Sure athletes make improvements, but there's the law of diminishing returns. It's kind of hard to maintain a level of greatness at that distance also. Look at Wariner. Do you see him running another 43.50? I don't. Reynolds ran that 43.29 and he never came close to running that again.
Well Wariner is past his peak so its understandable why hes never going to approach 43.50 again. Sanya hasn't reached hers yet. And at 48.70 shes looking good. My money is on Allyson Felix. Like I said 49.6 is remarkable for someone who doesn't train in the sport. There are many resons in my mind apart from the speculative obvious why that record still stands. But really aside from Perec, Freeman & Bryzgina there wasn't really any high level 400 metre runners from 1988 t0 2004.
Also from 93-94 the fastest 400 metre time in the world for 2 years were set by 100 metre specialists Gwen Torrence and Irina Privalova so what does that tell you about the quality of the 400 metres sprinters of that era? To run faster you need good adversaries. Which is why for the first time since Perec & Freeman I think we will see some sparks fly between Sanya & Allyson in years to come. Maybe your right, they may not break the record but I certainly bank on Richards and Felix to go quicker
I was going to say that. The talent pool for the women in the 400m isn't as high as it used to be. Felix actually reminds me most of Koch because she's able to run at a high level at 100 to 400.
No doubt, Felix is awesome, but that 47.60 is just alien-like. Nobody is ever going to run the first 300 like that again, unless they're juiced up to the brim. If Felix focuses on the event, she may come close, but I just can't see it being surpassed.
Maybe your right it may not be surpassed. But i actually think there is more chance of Kochs record being broken than there is for Usain Bolts or Flo Jo's records. Those records will stay for a very long time. But anyway for the first time in ages we have quality sprinters in the 400 who can bounce off each other. Richards has Felix. Perec had Freeman and Koch had Kratochvilova and Olga Bryzgina. It will be interesting to see what happens with Felix's career. Hopefully she'll commit to 400m
Well Usain Bolt's times will always be in jeopardy as long as Usain Bolt is running. As far as FloJo's records, Jeter ran. a 10.67 and looked like FloJo running away from Kerron Stewart in the process.
She was running about as fast as I've seen a woman run and she still was almost 2 tenths away from the record. FloJo's 200, well, just forget about it. No woman is touching that unless Felix starts juicing, which she won't.
let's look at the 200m Flojo did run 21.56(+1.7) in her semi final in Seoul and then 21.34(+1.3) in the finals -she had good wind reading. Gwen Torrence in '95 in a -2.2mps headwind despite being dq ran 21.77 converting that would be 21.53! under good conditions and let's say Jeter, Fraser and Stewart takes the 200m seriously there's no telling how fast they would have ran...
have you consider Merlene Ottey 21.64 had she had wind of 1.5 she would have ran 21.4+ the odds are good under good conditions with all sprinters turning up at the right time. I had my doubts about the 200m world record but once I learn about positive & negative wind readings that change my perspective
Yeah I can consider that, but that was almost 20 years ago. You can say if the wind was this, this runner would have ran that. I see your point, but it's a kind a pointless argument. That 21.34 will never be broken.
Yes, of course you could say Koch's record is more likely to be broken, but that's like saying we're more likely to reach a star system that's 7 light years away than one that's 1000 light years away. They're both impossible; at least for now.
let's be frank, Flojo did run 10.61 which shows that women can run within that time frame clearly while the 10.49 is questionable the 10.6 is attainable for sprinters who are dedicated to the task. despite her ban Katrin Krabbe in '91 ran 10.99 @ the world champs in -3.0 mps headwind converting that would be an amazing 10.68! bear in mind Torrence and Ottey would have ran 10.72 and 10.75 if that head wind was not there!
Perhaps. But you never know which NEXT athlete is round the corner. Hence what I meanby Bolt. Never in a million years did anyone think an athlete would come along and dominate the 100 and 200 like he did. So I go back to what I'm saying: You never know who's round the corner
Yeah, you're right. After seeing a drug-fueled Ben Johnson run a 9.79, I never thought a human could actually run faster than that. Now there's a guy that just knocked 2 tenths off that record. When I saw Michael Johnson run that 19.32, not even he came close to running a time like that again. That being said, these are all men. There was an article about how frustrating it is for female athletes these days because no matter how hard they try, they'll never approach those records.
Now of course, Richards did go on to say that it's all about winning races and not setting records, but it's sure nice to have a world record in your arsenal. Unless there's some 16-year old girl out there running 51 second 400's, it's going to be rough. Koch was ridiculously talented to begin with, but with state-sponsoring, she turned into a running machine.
WIsh I could just go out and run a 50.50.......
