For the people who were wondering about the efficacy of the system for fire control- the leading cause of deaths in a fire is smoke inhalation and not burns.. This system removes all smoke thus making escape easier. It's not meant to put out fires. I assume they still use a traditional sprinkler system to douse the fire.
From the 2007 press release: It was necessary to take a new approach, and so a globally unique smoke elimination system was developed especially for the Mercedes-Benz Museum. In the event of fire, 144 outlets located along the core walls inject air into the interior courtyard of the Mercedes-Benz Museum. This generates an artificial tornado, and the smoke collected is then discharged into the outside air via a smoke elimination ventilator located in the upper part of the building
I would recommend my interior design friend to incoporate the artificial tornado in a smoke filled bar he was commisioned to re-design, that would make things interesting. By the way, the bar is ironically called TWISTER..LOL
I hope you all know that the real world record for a tornado that is natural was in the capital of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City (and the metro) 36 people were killed, it caused 1.2 billion dollars in damage.
Just to tell you, why this tornado actually was created ... The purpose was not to get a world record, but to be able to get the smoke of an uncontrolled fire out of the building, so it has been developed for security reasons. The tornado actually creates a low pressure area which exhausts the smoke from the adjacent rooms of the museum and transports them through a flue outside of the building.
So this tornado is probably the only one which saves people, by keeping the emergency exits smokefree. As you see, we can even learn from the most destructional powers of nature to try to make practical use of them. I am actually very sold on on such piece of engineering.

aren't tornado's powered by water also? kinda like hurricanes, after the water runs out the storm does as well? just curious

Its the warmth of the water that you are thinking of, not the water itself.
