@hinasakukimi The Matt Smith series seems to have taken all his complaints and made them worse - he's far more knowing, far more gurning. If it weren't for the presence of the duller characters (and this is actually a compliment to Rory, less so to Amy) it would be unbearable. As it is, for me he was the first new Dr Who that tipped it back into 'It's for children only.'
@storageheater TBH I think it might have less to do with Matt Smith and more with Amy Pond, I really don't like her character and I think her lack of chemistry with Matt may be what puts me off since the Doctor's compatibility with his companions is most of what makes DW. Still, there are aspects I like about Matt, he's very articulate, well spoken and has a certain grace that I like. But I just don't think the depth and complexity they brought to the Doctor is there :/
To be fair, Tennant's series was easily the worst of the revamped series. Ecclestone's run was quality, and it's only gotten better and better since Steven Moffat came along.
lol, the olympian dies awww, OH LOOK A MAN PICKS IT UP! YAY, LET'S FORGET THE DEAD GUY AND CONCENTRATE ON THE GUY THAT WE SHOULD ARREST. WHO CARES WOOOOO! GO MYSTERY MAN!
@mgsfinalfantasy tennant was my fav, but it was very very close with eccleston!! both did amazing jobs of picking up the character and running with it
@ntacComputerSolution tennant was good in fairness. Matt Smith i think has done a good job at following both of them in fairness to the poor bastard :)
Chris Eccleston was the first Doctor I saw, and when I saw him regen into Tennant, my immediate reaction was "No way! Tennant's too skinny and quirky and meerkat-ish", but I converted after a while. I thought Tennant was amazing. Sometimes the script was a bit too trite for viewing comfort, but most of the Martha and Donna episodes were really well done. Now I'm in the process of trying to watch Matt Smith without thinking 'the tenth Doctor would have done/said such-and-such at this point."
about doctor who I agree the same thing about tracy beaker returns. The old tracy beaker series had moving scenes occasionally so you didnt get used to them. Now there's at least three every episode with unfunny humour and seriously soft lame kids who think that calling someone stinky is a swear
I think it would have been really interesting to see what David Tennant could've done with the amazing writing that Steven Moffat has brought with his tenure as head writer. While I think it would have been amazing it does seem the best thing happened for the show. It meant that Moffat could create his version of the Doctor which he wouldn't have really been able to do without a regeneration. I do miss David Tennant but Matt Smith is a good actor with some awfully good writers to boot
@CallsHimselfAWriter i have watched the matt smith episodes but i am a fan of the writing the directing .etc but its all been ruined by new writers and directors
Especially - The damned talking over the credits, or when they shrink them and hide them so you can't read who is being credited... HATE...
I want to see the show, not be told what's coming up later, because 9 out of 10 times it's something I don't care about, and no matter how many times some snotty tv guy enthusiastically pitches it, I'm NOT going to watch it.
I loved those series of Dr Who, but criticism is healthy, otherwise how can you make things better :D
He also defends DW in You Have Been Watching. He's trying to be mean and failing. I love Brooker, but there's only one show that makes him unable to be mean. My vote for greatest fiction on earth.
Too bad all the stuff Charlie said he wished they'd tone down got ramped up exponentially. And still no bum rash for The Doc. There really is no justice.
1. I like the jokes and comedy that they did on the show. That's sorta the reason why I like Doctor Who and Tennant's my favorite Doctor, so I don't think the gurning is a problem.
2. I don't have any problems with Ten saying like "Oh, it's space!" and other stuff like that.
3. I like the emotional moments in it. It kinda gives the characters development throughout the series and character development is important to shows.
Hope nobody hates what I said. Just giving out my own option.

Doctor Who is shit. It should be a kids program but its got ideas above its station - its not a ground-breaking, sci-fi drama as it seems to think it is. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy some shit TV (at times) but Doctor Who is terrible.
@SPeacock - Exactly. The pre-Noughties Dr. Who series' were class because they had their own identity and they weren't trying to position themselves as high quality television. Now when they did reach such lofty heights it was a pleasant surprise and the fans loved it. Now, its just cheap-looking, politically-correct BBC nonsense, trying to ape the likes of the modern Battlestar Gallactica and other sci-fi shows but falling short. And I hate idiots who use the phrase "politically correct", LOL!
haha "the bigest part of her face" I must say was thinking that every time I was watching the series. Anyway just point out you forgot the most awfulll ending when the old english queen show her boobs to the doctor and the Titanic just fly away.
@skinnydipper16 I know! What was the thinking behind that? The only truly bad episode there's been. And I disagree Charlie (Legend) Brooker, I love all the tugging at the heart strings AND the Doctor's daftness because I am a big, emotional, giggling girl!
Everything Charlie complains about is what killed Doctor Who, and my inner child. But - holy crap the video has got the the Olymypic Games part. That's is a powerful emetic. Where was I? Ah yes, the new series with Matt Smith has surprised me by being very very enjoyable.
I am a fan again.
:D
...Maybe its more to do with Amy Pond than anything else though...
Brooker has ruined Tennant for me. Every-time he acts llike "oh-i've-seen-it-all-before-sort-of-arse" I start laughing and the illusion of the show is ruined for me.
The BBC announcer last week was the best, though. After a huge build-up, dramatic moment, Churchill, Daleks, space fight, awesomeness, the credits roll and we hear... "And we'll see what the Daleks are up to next Saturday. But first..."
this is wonderful! i'm a huge fan of David Mitchell, and i thought HE could rant! this is incredible, a pin-point focus and analysation of pros and cons without descending into mindless, childish arguments like " i fink its rubbish coz its shit". Really, really witty, really really funny!
Questionable acting? I'm a long-time Dr. Who fan but seriously? When was it ever anything other than questionable? That's what makes the Doctor fun, man!
There's a harsh truth to face people, Doctor Who is a children's show. The goofiness and silliness we're currently seeing has always been there and will always be there unfortunately. If you ask me, they should just move it to CBBC and have done with it. I'd still watch it of course!
Tom Baker was my favourite Who. I have just downloaded some of his episodes. I have to tell you they are rubbish :D
Terrible acting, awful effects, very very poor characterisation, I watched the episode in which Sarah Jane leaves the Tardis and the Doc just said "bye then" lol - paraphrasing.
Still when your 5 years old I guess your easily pleased ha.
That's pretty much what I was thinking. Classic Who was anything but serious. Goofy as hell. Hell, RTD's series actually improved upon the goofiness and gave it some substance.
People who complain about NuWho really need to go back and see just how cheesy the original was. If you can't see it, you're looking through the rose-colored glasses, my friend.
That being said, I laughed my ass off at this. And, admittedly, I also laughed my ass off at the scenes you didn't think were funny. So...
@trooperJac I've actually re-watched the entire Baker run. There are actually some very good ones (depending on the writer) but also many bad ones. Anyway you look at it though, Baker was a pleasure to watch.
Maybe it's the cynical black 'joy of the world kicked out by reality' side of my personality but I find this new version a bit shit. It's like Russel T Davies has got 10 of his closest life partners round and they all liberally spunked all over it.
Tennant is an ass with his cocksure holier than thou act.
I agree with his point that the deliberate goofiness in Dr Who is awful. Mythbusters is doing that now too and it forces me to change channels lest I vomit.
I agree. David Tennant is a fantastic actor; it's not his fault that his Doctor so often lapsed into goofiness. I've always thought Russel T. Davies was overrated. Yes, he revamped Doctor Who and I respect him for it, but that doesn't mean he deserves a pass either. Steven Moffat is brilliant though. Bring on the Matt Smith years!
@TulseLuper remember that scene when he's going to sacrifice himself he's saying goodbye to Amy, and it's just quiet, a low rumbling of a dying sun in the background while a worn out Doctor is saying what looks like his last goodbye in a few poignant words. if it was Russel T doing that scene, it would have been operatic music blasting out while everyone sobbed loudly about what an amazing godlike hero he is, while the Doctor belts out some cheesy "inspiring" line before rocketing into the sun.
@Misishaxi some would argue that was better. the big bang was the worse finale ever. how many times did the doctor go back and save himself with no explanation?
@Misishaxi I agree. Part of the problem is that they started writing the Doctor with Tennant's popularity in mind. The End of Time was ruined that way; it didn't feel like the Doctor regenerating, it felt like TV's Messiah dying for our sins.
@TulseLuper I fully agree. Apart from Series 1,I don't think I can watch the last Finale. Did RTD really have to drag out the regeneration scene with a friggin tribute?!
@TulseLuper I agree but I always found the Davies series' to contain a lot more meaning. They seemed to have a stronger moral and they were very thought provoking. However saying that there were two fantastic Moffat episodes that did exactly that, the ones with the "Gangers".
@dogdogcatful But that isn't what Doctor Who is about. Doctor Who is about a silly man who flies through time and space in a box having weird (sometimes exciting sometimes scary) adventures, and that's why, on the whole, the Eccleston and Smith episodes have worked so much better than Tennant's.
goddd, i love charlie brooker! the ghostbusters scene actually made me cringe inside, it's terrible! this is why i can't wait for tennant to regenerate; no more of his obnoxious cockiness or his childlike gibbering. bring on matt smith, i say. even though he's so young they'll be getting a toddler to play the role next time. -.-
I gave that Benny-Hill-ish chase sequence in "Love and Monsters" a free pass because it was based on Elton's recollection of events, so he may have been embellishing a bit for dramatic (or comedic) effect.
Slightly unfair to judge the season on the basis of 'Fear Her' and 'Love And Monsters'. I don't know ANYONE who particularly enjoys either of those two episodes...
And the Billie-face-bits game was great fun, but in the end I think her LIPS definitely deserve to win some kind of special prize. I mean, John Barrowman prefers blokes, but even he said how much he enjoyed kissing her "lovely big luscious lips", as he put it. Lucky sod...
New Who is the most cheesy pile of dog shit ever produced; if you can like it, you're a fucking retard, plain and simple. I'll never watch Brooker again after seeing this.
scares kids shitless??? my nine year old daughter goes to sleep with dr. who story read by david tennant every night. we find this soo funny as both my partner and i used to be scared behind the sofa every saturday night when we were kids. but charlie brooker has to be the king of ranters lol. we love him. :) :) :)
I can't agree with the comment about emotion in new who - classic who was way better and one of those reasons is that it DIDN'T get us into the character's emotions.
I dunno why but it just doesn't suit "proper" Doctor Who (i.e. classic who)
ahhh the commentary over the end credits kills me. i actually wait the whole show for it sometimes when its not been a brilliant episode and wait for the music to make it all better again. but half the time they have some cunt talkin over it! it actual makes me want to hit the telly !! if i find the guy who does it im gona fuckin nut im!!
funny i was expecting to hate charlie brooker after this but he points out all the stuff that i noticed. DT gurns too much and the over emotional scenes do get in the way. PLUS THE MUSIC AT THE END! ooooh that annoys me. way to go charlie!
I loved David Tennant's performance as the Doctor! He had everything! All the things Charlie complains about are the things that makes the new series brilliant! Doctor who must be pretty good if even Charlie Brooker admits to liking it! Looking forward to the new season!
But all of the facts that he complains about is what makes the new series ever more popular than the old!! It's funny and everything but I still love Doctor Who and can't for wait it to come back! Pity it's not with Tennant but I suppose I'll give the new guy a go =)
How is this man able to articulate exactly what i feel about everything?!?!!?!?!?!?

@Misishaxi I agree. Part of the problem is that they started writing the Doctor with Tennant's popularity in mind. The End of Time was ruined that way; it didn't feel like the Doctor regenerating, it felt like TV's Messiah dying for our sins.
TulseLuper 9 months ago 9
@TulseLuper I fully agree. Apart from Series 1,I don't think I can watch the last Finale. Did RTD really have to drag out the regeneration scene with a friggin tribute?!
cashomnitrix 8 months ago
@TulseLuper: Well said, mate. the poor man at 1:48 can't believe how crap the series has become. :-)
EddieTheFishReturns 1 year ago
@TulseLuper I fucking hate Davies. He has no business making TV.
Kainlarsen 11 months ago
@TulseLuper I agree but I always found the Davies series' to contain a lot more meaning. They seemed to have a stronger moral and they were very thought provoking. However saying that there were two fantastic Moffat episodes that did exactly that, the ones with the "Gangers".
dogdogcatful 7 months ago
@dogdogcatful But that isn't what Doctor Who is about. Doctor Who is about a silly man who flies through time and space in a box having weird (sometimes exciting sometimes scary) adventures, and that's why, on the whole, the Eccleston and Smith episodes have worked so much better than Tennant's.
BillyIsATwat23 2 months ago
goddd, i love charlie brooker! the ghostbusters scene actually made me cringe inside, it's terrible! this is why i can't wait for tennant to regenerate; no more of his obnoxious cockiness or his childlike gibbering. bring on matt smith, i say. even though he's so young they'll be getting a toddler to play the role next time. -.-

Hahaha love the Billie Piper's face game!

I gave that Benny-Hill-ish chase sequence in "Love and Monsters" a free pass because it was based on Elton's recollection of events, so he may have been embellishing a bit for dramatic (or comedic) effect.

i watched Dr. who as a child in 80' loved it... why i don't know it's crap it was crap in the 60's it was crap in the 70's and it's crap now
vikingmog 2 years ago

PLUS THE MUSIC AT THE END! ooooh that annoys me. way to go charlie!
tardisgirl102 3 years ago
I loved David Tennant's performance as the Doctor! He had everything! All the things Charlie complains about are the things that makes the new series brilliant! Doctor who must be pretty good if even Charlie Brooker admits to liking it! Looking forward to the new season!

Funnily enough, one year later Charlie was saying "I have to say this, because it's true - David Tennant is the best Doctor Who ever"

where did he say this? i'd like to know :)
xLordIEvilno65x 2 years ago
What episode did he say that? Or when did he say that?
Blacknarcissa 2 years ago
please can you tell me when he said that? i've been looking for a newer review of his because he happened to review the worst series.
crashbandicoot62 2 years ago
But all of the facts that he complains about is what makes the new series ever more popular than the old!! It's funny and everything but I still love Doctor Who and can't for wait it to come back! Pity it's not with Tennant but I suppose I'll give the new guy a go =)

Stupid question perhaps, which episode is shown when the Doctor has those John Lennon glasses and tie around his head?
I'm just curious.
