No you have to be connected to the internet at all times, unless your on a iphone and your using the 3g. But other then that you must be connect to the internet at all times. And sometimes it just wont pick up the nearest internet source because most internet source have passwords.

no thats not true.

the 8 gb. ipod touch doesnt have a mic at all.

its actually not even considered a true 3g model. apple said so themselves.

the 32 and 64 gb. are the true 3G

and they dont have built in mic's they are external. the mic is on the headphone wire.

NP. might i suggest using icall instead. unlimited free calls and no sip needed. theres no incoming calls tho. heres my method:

use icall for all outgoing calls (a plus for icall is it lets u "copy" your real cellphone # for the CID )

then i have fring running in the background for all my incoming calls.

(because sip providers such as voipstunt give you unlimited incoming calls)

lastly, i use ipkall.com for masking my sip account with a static number for ppl to call)

as far as icall....once in a while there are ads before your call so just press 1 and then they go away.

the number you will use is +61 the you put the city code in front of that so u need to find out your city code, so then after you have +61 then the city code you then put the number you want to dial.

Example were i live mine would be +613..............then the number you want to call.

I tried it. I got a call through 1 time. After that I tried calling the same number and the cell phone wouldn't ring although the touch rang out. Got Call Terminated. Then I tried calling a landline and same thing happened. I'm using the right country code and area code as well. And since it worked the first time it's not bad setup because it worked once.
