this guy didn't break any kind of official record. He did not sail unassisted. He stopped several times to relax and he even flew back home for Christmas.
All this rich kid did was take a year's vacation to exotic ports of call.
hribkoff said it right. preparation is everything. He has several technologies a 16 year old 50 years ago would never dream. To -have- the money for such a thing is a blessing in itself, he will probably only be making more from this. -That- is success.. Making money..
I would let my kids do this if they were as prepared and confident as him. I have 2 teens and we have sailed a lot... this kid is prepared and will have a lot of support. GOOD LUCK! Don't listen to the naysayers.... follow your dreams!
I know this because of the following: Zac's parents are not dummies. They appear, at least from interviews, to be of average to above average intelligence. So they cannot plead ignorance in their assessment of the dangers of this trip. Zac stands a MEASURABLE chance of not returning. While he will be accompanied by other boats in safe waters, no one is going to follow him into dangerous waters. Rescue boats could be hours away after he capsizes. He would be swallowed up within minutes. Crazy.
Best of luck Zac! Your a youngman mature beyond your age. I heard you on the radio and I was just amazed with how you came across. Your knowledge of seamanship and spirit will get you through. I just know your going to do it! Do a pit stop at the Rock of Gibralter and visit the Barbery Apes.
Ive got some years on you but this is one of the things on my list of to do's!

Karen Thorndike is 56 years old. 56 - 11 does not equal 18. Stay in School.

Okay, so the record is the age of the sailor... not the trip itself, or the methods... those have been done for almost 20 years already.

Measurable = Sizeable. A far greater chance of death than driving down the 101.
