7.5 hrs to fly from London(Gatwick) to Boston(Logan) in 747 in 1999, add 35 mins to 2 hrs for pre-check-in time; most of which being spent in lounge getting drunk.
Now? Don't know. Won't lower myself to being treated as a 'potential terrorist' by American aircraft staff raking through my stuff, half-undressed, made to take off shoes, spoken to like shit just to fly on public transport to their hate-mongering, anti-freedom, 3rd world, debt-ridden cunt-ry!
A beautiful plane. Yes, you could fly from London to NY in around 3 hrs - if you were rich enough. The British and French governments poured fantastic quantities of public funds into this project. In the end, they had to give the few production versions to their national airlines, because nobody wanted to buy an expensive, noisy (banned from most airports) plane that had such a small payload. Although an elegant machine, it was not a commercial solution matching the needs of modern flying.
@Burbclaver Do research not claim knowledge. USA didnt want competition because they didnt have an equivalent. It was "urban mythed" that sonic booms caused illness etc to make people lobby it, but US fghters flew all the live long. Concord would have gone cheaper had it become the std. Its true what was said when Concorde was retired to museums with just 1 crash (No fault of concordes = scrap metal left on a runway), they said. "Go see Concord, the future shelved as the past"
@TheMightyBlighty no. the US didn't build one because they didn't have an equivalent, there were lots of reasons why US/Boeing scrapped their SST. LOL, "Do research no claim knowledge."
The new single, Anthem of the Working Man is THE theme of the Occupy Wall Street movement. In the musical tradition of Simon & Garfunkel (The Boxer), Dylan (Like A Rolling Stone) and Barry McGuire (Eve of Destruction), it explores the widening gap between the ultra-rich and the rest of us. Catch it on YouTube!
No need to time different places. The Boeing 747-400 will cruise at 0.90 mach ish and the concorde at about 2 mach. The concorde, like you said, is faster, no doubt. It will reach the destiontion twice as fast as an average long haul jetliner, not 4 times faster though :).
@ImmortalSynn Its more a case of the whole design of the aircraft, i.e. the MOST advanced commercial aircraft ever designed thus far being completely scrapped at the cost of the complete devolution of the airline industry.
Plus it was a beautiful thing to see in the air, no pilot can deny that.
I remember this! We lived very close to Leeds Bradford airport and it was a big deal at the time - the first landing of Concorde there. I remember the local news interviewing the pilot after the landing who said (in a very strong French accent) something along the lines of: "Where did that wind come from?" That'll be the Pennines, mate! I went to see Concorde parked up by the perimeter fence and couldn't beleive how SMALL it was! It looked so much bigger on TV!!
"Concorde Landing at leeds/Bradford," it was only then the pilot suddenly realised his Sat-Nav was buggered, and that it should have been Heathrow..... :..:
You know these planes are much safer than conventional airliners. The only concorde that crashed was due to debris left on the runway that damaged the landing gear and left engine. Unfortunately many people found this incident to be a way to retire the concordes. Even today I find this plane ahead of its time
I agree with everything you said. but the debris left on the runway actually punctured one of the fuel tanks, hence the enormous fireball streaming out of the back of the plane. I think this then starved one engine bank of fuel and they stalled, preventing it from climbing and ultimately crashing. But yeah, it's a shame they retired such an amazing aircraft after one incident for which Concorde itself was not actually to blame for.
@levijonessheep it wasnt just for that incident. they thought of retired all the concord be4 the accident anyway.due to high maintainance cost and they could not get full seated concord.imagine if they did announce to make them stop opperating, then concord inceidnt would not even happend saddly. :((
What actually happened was that Airbus, who manufactured spare parts for the Concorde stated that they would only continue to do that if both Air France and British Airways kept their Concorde fleet in service.
Air France however decided to end their Concorde service because their customer base had lost confidence after that crash. British Airways were therefore forced to end Concorde flights too.
Although I agree that maintenance costs were an issue, it was not the main reason.
@levijonessheep Concorde F-BTSC crashed due to negligence of Air France maintenance crew. Blame the French if you need anyone to blame for the loss of Concorde from the skies.
No, the pilot thought he was landing in England only to be told it had now gone to the dogs, and we all know why. Abort. Abort. This country really has gone to the dogs.
@scrog77 The French were never as interested in concorde as the british,BA made a good treturn on concorde for many years, whilst the french could not make theirs pay BA took more pride in their fleet and it showed,it was indeed the French who ruined concorde sadly.
I beg to differ on whether 'commercial aircraft' would have lack of power to abort a landing like this. Though Concorde makes it look spectacular and unbeatable, any of the heavies can do this when it's necessary. And....Concorde was 'commercial aircraft'.

False, the French Concorde was only stopped during some modifications: replacement from the good year tires from 1969 with the Michelin radial space shuttle tires, and installing energy absorbing material in the tanks.
