When the North American Free Trade Agreement was inked in 1993, it was thought that it would help bring Mexican wages up to par with those paid to workers in America. However, at least in the auto industry, the exact opposite has been the result. The US hasn't lost thousands of auto worker jobs, Mexico found them. There are still a lot of plants on the chopping block for the near future yet the big 3 are building new plants in Mexico. End so called "Free Trade" now, Tariffs are a good thing.

When the North American Free Trade Agreement was inked in 1993, it was thought that it would help bring Mexican wages up to par with those paid to workers in America. However, at least in the auto industry, the exact opposite has been the result. The US hasn't lost thousands of auto worker jobs, Mexico found them. There are still a lot of plants on the chopping block for the near future yet the big 3 are building new plants in Mexico. End so called "Free Trade" now, Tariffs are a good thing.

@ENDtheFED2012 True the dept is a big problem. But maybe it would not be such a big problem it we didn't overextend ourselves in two very expensive wars. Give large tax breaks that turns out we couldn't afford based on one of that same principles that was enacted right before the great depression. And many other factors that were seen before hand but could have been avoided.

@ClassicFIHD I seem to recall that the Republicans broadly supported the bailout of the automotive sector as well - in fact, the economic stimulus began under a Republican administration. I commend to you the excellent article "Late-2000s recession" on Wikipedia - well-footnoted and referenced. With a real unemployment rate hovering at about 16% at the end of 2009, indeed a collaspe of the auto sector would have brought it up to Depression-era levels.

In almost every way, politics right now mirror exactly what happened in the 30's: tea = populists and Huey Long, Father Coughlin = Glenn Beck, etc. It's all the same cycle. And as usual, BOTH parties are doing their darndest to screw the working man... Just saying. Nothing pisses me off more than Baby Boomer politics and culture wars when there's blood in the streets.

@fishhead06 If you want to deal with reality and facts, this is not the worst economic downturn since the great depression, that is another liberal lie. The truth is this recession is not quite as bad as the Carter recession where national unemployment was at 11.3% (and as high as 23% in largely manufacturing states) along with staggering inflation! We haven't even got to the point of inflation yet but it's coming.

a better system needed in plants for the workers to develop skills needed to produce a good car and it costs too much to properly assemble a car in the US because of the stupid regulation and shit. thats why any made in USA japanese car is just as bad if not a tiny bit better at best compare to the american cars. it's a long way to go
