  • So how much in general should one expect to pay for decentish speaker cables? given your advice here.

  • well, maybe im oldschool here but i was always told the best speaker cables to have are made from old mains cable the more solid the better!, however as i said im old school and i know that newer equipment is different my system is old school sony amp dual record deck akai reel to reel all mid 70s id guess at. speakers are solavox all sound good to me.

  • @reelfanobsession i think the point I was making is that cables et al do make a difference. A poorer cable, or shall we say, one that is less well-matched, will not get the best out of your system. Also, that these are only tweaks, and we should not go overboard on the money stakes. People have been known to spend as much as a Mac Pro on one interconnect! I am not sufficiently technical to know what cables should be made of, but if old mains cable floats one's boat, then go for it.

  • Hi Mark, I have just recently subscribed to you channel and enjoying very much the information in the videos you have posted. I have been into audio for many years and as is the case been through many combinations in my reference system. You are right , your system is only as good as its weakest link, but one step further, I have come to the conclusion(a long time ago) that it is also a recipe. Certain pieces of equipment are just made for each other. Finding that recipe is the key.

  • Thanks for the very interesting video. I have been trying different speaker cables recently and have noticed how each pair of speaker cables definately have an influence on the sound. I have also found that after some hours of use the sound can also be slighly different to when they were first connected.

  • @sam66hazmal This is because cables, like all parts of the hi-fi chain, need time to bed in. A bit like an engine in a "never-before-driven" car! Reviewers often subject components, esp. speakers to quite rigorous warm-ups before they review them, for that reason.

  • Hi Mark, thanks for all your uploads in particular Hi Fi 101 series, was wondering how to get best sound out of speakers (RS3's)....I have complete Rega set up in Apollo and Mira3 and absolutely love the sound but need to understand how speakers should be positioned, do I need to toe these in with the bass driver inwards?.

  • @marplesl OK, In a rectangular room: Speakers at the outside wall end, about 6 ft (2 metres) apart, but away from corners. Approx 40cm (1 & a bit ft!) away from the wall, no toe-in. Further if bass is over-powering, closer if you need more. I have the bass drivers inwards, but you can try both ways. Rega speakers are very positioning-friendly, so it's a case of trying it. I've tried toeing in, but then I get obsessive about the exact amount and if they match etc...

  • Thank you for the video. I must admit my experience with the NACA5 has been very different from yours. I use it with very good results in a non Nain system, however, the cable is designed to work mainly in the somewhat esoteric environment of an all Naim system.

I have also had good experiences with Chord's interconnects, though I've never heard their speaker cable.

  • Excellent video! may I add that the cable connections can always be suspect of the weakest link in any syatem. The connectors need not be visibly oxidized, and can still be oxidized enough to create a dielectric effect. Clean connections, solid connections are of paramount importance. Also interconnect cable lengths should be short as possible, and made of high quality oxygen free conductors.

  • great video :)
