hi, this is V.I.B.E. again (the mind confuzzling electronic hip hop duo), please if any of you viewing this have a few minutes, check out our channel and watch Before We Depart, our newest music video.
we are two 15 year olds, trying to start early becoming a great act, and we need your feedback to get better and make better music for you. thanks :D
@iamductri Like it or not the President in office is a part of the Kennedy Center Honors. The wards broadcast is generally a good show. Only you pettiness ruin it for you
I just watched this 6 times in a row now, and am forcing myself to not watch it again cause i know i will just keep coming back to this masterpiece. Bob Dylan is the best thing that has ever happened to music. Nobody on earth can, or ever will touch him when it comes to music.
@werobanks You've never seen the Kennedy Center Honors before? What's hanging around his neck is the special award that he received from the President. All the honorees wear them.
i heard that dylna wanted gary coleman to induct him..but they the government nixed that idea and brought in gregory peck who had one foot in the grave
These two would stand in line for each other's performances any time I think. Both are good enough for each other so for sure either is more than good enough for me. Thanks guys.
jeez how excruciatingly uncomfortable that must have been for him. i think it would also be very strange and maybe fustrating to have your whole life and career summed up and examined in 5 minutes
I feel so sorry for him.. Imagen 1000 people standing and applauding for you and knowing that a billion people see you as some kind of messiah, while all you've ever done is fulfilling your passion. It is too much for a man to bare, i completely understand his awkwardness here
If I ever was to get on a stage and in front of a podium to say or give a speech about Bob Dylan's career and his talent, it would be very, very brief. Just a simple "Wow". Anybody that knows anything about music, poetry and art would completely understand.
I find it so refreshing that he doesn't fake any of his response. Saw another interview with him lately and I don't think he cracked a smile over the 20 min. interview. He said the only person he has to answer to is God. If you're a believer or a non-believer you have to admire him for being honest and not considering if what he says is accepted or not.
i was even uncomfortable watching the tribute because i know Bob Dylan is. I could just imagine him thinking "Where's the nearest exit?" But the truth is he deserves all of this, he's an icon whether he likes it or not. Damn Dylan, JUST DEAL! lol
I think it's '97. I lost a VHS recording I had of this entire year's honors, and wish oh wish I still had it. If someone still has this entire year's honors (Dylan, and the rest) we'd love to see it posted here.
For Bob to have renowned actor Gregory Peck pay such a stirring tribute to him would definitely have made him twist in his seat ... he's been uncomfortable receiving accolades since he was a kid in the Village, despite his more often seen cockiness. And now in 2008, the Pulitzer. Love the man!
I think they all know Bob skirms and runs from events like this. But it was more important for all these folks of this generation to let Bob know how important he was to them and to say he is loved. It's good for him. He needs truth. that was truth
He has always been an artist that makes songs that make people think. All the greatist hits really paint pictures in your head as you listen. His voice has gone these days, but I still think he can still sing. He is making some great music these days.
Only Dylan himself has the ability to write words powerful enough to sufficiently explain his timeless genius. But because of his glorious lack of ego we will never hear them.
That audience looked up at him with such adoration. African Americans knew he was on their side. He took others back to their youth. Peck speaks with such tender respect. I've read Dylan predominates onthe web. He's a tower of charisma. He has said he could never express himself as he does via his art. That's why he looks almost expressionless imo. And would you believe I'm a new Dylan fan? :)
Thanks for the heads up. Yep, the discoveries seem endless for this 64-yr old who was introduced to him in-depth via "No Direction Home." Last night I was in a packed house for the legend at RIT. His band is ASTOUNDING--his harmonica is still sweet. He began with "Rainy Day Women..." After about an hour and a half, no one wanted him to leave!
When I was brought to tears via the Scorcese docu, I felt like no one would respond like I did. I was slightly wrong? :) These words are poignant enough to write down: "In him we hear the echo of old American voices: Whitman, and Mark Twain; blues singers, fiddlers and balladeers. Bob Dylan's voice reaches just as high, and it will linger just as long."
well deserved award and more. Bob has been the voice of our collective conscience. He's the ruler of this planet...:-) Yeah, he's modest and does get embarrased !
It's funny how it's so obvious who he respects... this is exactly the kind of thing that makes him cringe, but clearly he respects Gregory Peck, so he's putting up with it.
I saw this months ago and was very impressed. Since ,I have been introduced to " Most of the time" I think it fits in perfectly with the retrospective. Fantastic!
Best Dylan solo album of 1980s, given that it's his least prominent decade musically. To say that about "Oh Mercy" knocks you off any pedestal on which you've ever stood because it's still one hell of a musical achievement.
Iv listened to and discovered Bob Dylan since i was 12 years old and he's been, hands down, the greatest inspirationn of my life. Lustre5, enjoy every second you discover a new gem song from the master
Thanks bibsweetrock--your screen name suits you. Just read a comment from Dylan's mother (she died in 2000) saying that her son is full of compassion and that he has no ego, and that "everyone should have a son like Bobby."
Right when the video tribute ends, and you see a long shot of him in the balcony, doesn't it look as if he's whiping away tears? I think he was very moved. Uncomfortable, but moved.
We just can`t get enough of Bob. Hundred years from now people will still think of him as a giant. He were there when I was a little kid, & he`s still around, hopefully for many years to come. God bless you Bob.
Dylan's discomfiture is linked to his innate shyness, which goes back to his incredulity at landing on this planet. Sometimes the shyness is mistaken for aloofness or even snobbery (Groom's Still Waiting at the Altar). Here (looking down from above and therefore choosing to look up!) he can't get out of it and takes the medicine.
What's the song that starts playing at about 4:30, and the song that starts playing at 6:14. Sorry just started listneing to Dylan, a couple of months back.
At the very beginning of the doc, the song is "Man in the long Black Coat", but it's only played for about 20 or so seconds. Might be the best song on "Oh Mercy".
gregory peck is right on the money, 'his voice reaches as high and will endure as long' as whitman & mark twain, not to mention emerson & guthrie, but in the end, he's the greatest of the greats. it's our honor to live, coincidentally, in bob dylan's time.
I love Bob Dylan's music! It makes my heart feel good that he is being honored. Especially in this age of awful, electronic rap music. Bless Bob Dylan! He's cute, even in his older age :)
It reminds me of what Nina Simone said: "Bob Dylan is the closest thing we have to a saint in America." And a kiss from Bacall? Please. We should live so long.
Man in Long Black Coat from Oh Mercy, excellent. I love this montage and the music; the scene looking out from behind him on stage in front of that huge crowd leaves me speechless.
He never liked to be famous. And he didn't know this when he was young. Yes, his words are poetry and his music is straight and goes deep in our hearts. Everybody knows him. If he just wanted to get famous, he never would have wrote this songs.
But it's his fault. You can't expect to be famous and nobody knows you. It's a kind of tragedy. Dylan fought a lot with thtat.
But the gift, that he gave us, he cannot undo. Sorry, Bob.
Hey lustre5, more good news. My cousin says her machine learning matches you and another Dylan fan perfectly. He's RightWingedBob (RWB. Twins separated at birth? We'all should get together for a beer after work. Oops, I forgot, y'all dont work.

Gregory Peck flubs the "Brownsville Girl" lyrics and Bob Dylan, at 1:21, responds with a queer, quizzical double eyebrow raise.
Then Peck, at 1:47, finishes by summing Dylan up saying "Bob Dylan's never been about get out of town before the shooting starts."
To this Dylan purses his lips, raises his eyes as if to say "Oh, really?"(O RLY as the kids/owls say)
Then the wide shot shows a giant black woman (Carol Dennis?) nodding her head, seconding the sentiment - "Mmhmm, he's just like that."

if you notice bob squirms then reacts when peck states that "Bob Dylan was never one to leave town before the shooting starts"
clearly he was surprised at Peck's insightfully poetic look at his career
even so he was clearly flattered judging by his hand gestures as Peck left the stage

Sorry, Bob.

aw, Bob should have at least smiled while Gregory was flattering his ego. Mayeb he was squirmng because he feels old.

Lovely to see Gregory Peck up there, saluting Bob and Bob squirming so miserably.

Great clip - never seen it before.
His humilty is his greatness.
But he needs to know that his record sales don't account for the affection ( not obsession ) that he has inspired.
Then again, he's a cynical old bugger!

Yeah Bob is so uncomfortable but everything Peck says is true. Great video of two great men.

Hey lustre5, more good news. My cousin says her machine learning matches you and another Dylan fan perfectly. He's RightWingedBob (RWB. Twins separated at birth? We'all should get together for a beer after work. Oops, I forgot, y'all dont work.

Also, a message for Professor X. My cousin and her collegial team do enjoy the creative names he gives to his stinkels. Beats just giving y'all a number.

I've commented on this video before but I'm doing it again. It just amazes me how much influence one man can have upon the world.
