  • who's the lucky chick who smeared lipstick on his cheek? the video got blurry at this point

  • dylan must be the most amazing man ever

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, getting honoured by Gregory Peck is really something. 2 of my heroes, dylan & peck x

  • I can't help but wonder if Dylan is sitting there thinking to himself "they still just don't get it".

  • How I love this man, for whole my life now.

  • Does anyone know which songs were performed?

  • i dont know man, fuck The Clinton, they ruin the whole show

  • @iamductri Like it or not the President in office is a part of the Kennedy Center Honors. The wards broadcast is generally a good show. Only you pettiness ruin it for you

  • @zibimark Complete no ears and absolutely no discernment. But then something is happening here and you don't know what it, do you Mister Zibimark?

  • Who else performed in honour of Bob? I know Springsteen performed Times they are a changing...who else?

  • I just watched this 6 times in a row now, and am forcing myself to not watch it again cause i know i will just keep coming back to this masterpiece. Bob Dylan is the best thing that has ever happened to music. Nobody on earth can, or ever will touch him when it comes to music.

  • Bob does not appear to be amused.

  • I love you Bobby.....my beautiful poet. So humble and never part of the game.

  • just AWESOME!

    Thx

  • whys he wearing that necklace

  • @werobanks You've never seen the Kennedy Center Honors before? What's hanging around his neck is the special award that he received from the President. All the honorees wear them.

  • @MChantal76 Ah, I see. Muchas Gracias. (She's got everything she needs............)

  • i heard that dylna wanted gary coleman to induct him..but they the government nixed that idea and brought in gregory peck who had one foot in the grave

  • Bob Dylan is one for the ages.

  • Well, there was this movie I seen one time

About a man riding ’cross the desert and it starred Gregory Peck

  • @libertybraves She ain't you, but she's here and she's got that dark rhythm in her soul

  • Wow. It's bob Dylan!

  • The voice of my generation. Amazing man

  • @ronaasr he doesn't like that title and i can see why.

  • he's like the king

  • I was in my glory that night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I really wonder how come some people dislike a vídeo like this, damn it, it is Bob Dylan whom we are talking about!

  • @IgorMorais666 I fully agree with you!

    He's our Greatest!

  • He hates all that attention!

  • This is incredible. I saw this on TV way back when and I cried and the tears are flowing now.

  • We love love love love love.....you Bobby

  • lol @ gregory peck..always reminds me of that family guy

  • Greetings and thanks so much for this vid!

It was such a joy to watch :)

  • he looks pretty high

  • I really loved the standing ovation I really deserved it more than anyone else

  • That was lovely, but it must've been so awkward for him!

  • These two would stand in line for each other's performances any time I think. Both are good enough for each other so for sure either is more than good enough for me. Thanks guys.

  • Gregory peck - class act. Rather surprised to see him do this dylan tribute but nice.

  • what's the song that starts 02m13s just at the beginning of the documentary ?

  • @gemblade Man in The Long Black Coat

  • jeez how excruciatingly uncomfortable that must have been for him. i think it would also be very strange and maybe fustrating to have your whole life and career summed up and examined in 5 minutes

  • I feel so sorry for him.. Imagen 1000 people standing and applauding for you and knowing that a billion people see you as some kind of messiah, while all you've ever done is fulfilling your passion. It is too much for a man to bare, i completely understand his awkwardness here

  • Thank you Bob Dylan for being such a massive influence on my life and giving me a purpouse and a direction, for that i will be eternally grateful.

  • No one will match the power of Dylan's incredible catolog of masterpieces

  • I love you Bobby, you are the greatest!

I love your music very very much,

long live N God bless you always.

  • bad choice of people to speak about Dylan. "A teller of the tale" what corny bullshit.

  • haha he's sooo uncomfortable with this

  • Bob Dylan and I share birthdays!

  • If I ever was to get on a stage and in front of a podium to say or give a speech about Bob Dylan's career and his talent, it would be very, very brief. Just a simple "Wow". Anybody that knows anything about music, poetry and art would completely understand.

  • i would kill for this on dvd

  • I find it so refreshing that he doesn't fake any of his response. Saw another interview with him lately and I don't think he cracked a smile over the 20 min. interview. He said the only person he has to answer to is God. If you're a believer or a non-believer you have to admire him for being honest and not considering if what he says is accepted or not.

    A true radical.

  • i was even uncomfortable watching the tribute because i know Bob Dylan is. I could just imagine him thinking "Where's the nearest exit?" But the truth is he deserves all of this, he's an icon whether he likes it or not. Damn Dylan, JUST DEAL! lol

  • i have this on vhs the shirley cesar tribute to dylan was the best it was get on the lords side

  • Dylan never fakes it. I love that he doesn't pander.

  • An original genius, the brightest light in the rock era.

  • Is the voice at the beginning James Lipton?

  • dylan is a genius

perhaps he hasn't led the line we wished of him but he has lived his own life and is possibly the only artist never to succumb to the publics demands

  • what the song called that starts at 2:12 ?

  • Found it, its called "Man In The Long Black Coat"

  • even this does not come close to what that man has done

  • bOZZ-

I think it's '97. I lost a VHS recording I had of this entire year's honors, and wish oh wish I still had it. If someone still has this entire year's honors (Dylan, and the rest) we'd love to see it posted here.

  • read his book Chronicles. It makes it all oh so clear.

  • He so well deserves it, now he has a gong and Pullizer Prize too. a cute modest hero!

  • Wow, what an awesome video.

  • His mother is just beaming!

  • What year is that?

  • I think this is in 1996 or 1997, not too sure

  • dylan looks fat and bored; dylan has always disliked such lavish subservient eulogies

  • hahaha, right on

  • Bruce springsteen is the poor mans bob dylan and Bob Dylan is the rich mans pete seeger.

  • What can you say about the man...except...We Love You Bobby

  • For Bob to have renowned actor Gregory Peck pay such a stirring tribute to him would definitely have made him twist in his seat ... he's been uncomfortable receiving accolades since he was a kid in the Village, despite his more often seen cockiness. And now in 2008, the Pulitzer. Love the man!

  • do you have a jessye norman and lauren bacall kennedy center honor? the honoree is the same year of bob dylan

  • that must have been so hard on him!

  • I think they all know Bob skirms and runs from events like this. But it was more important for all these folks of this generation to let Bob know how important he was to them and to say he is loved. It's good for him. He needs truth. that was truth

  • Poor Bobby you can tell he hates people talking about him. No wonder eh, it's like an epitaph

  • Why are they acting like he's dead! I wouldn't be very comfrerable myself.

  • i dreamed i saw woody guthrie last night

as alive as you or me

he said "i'm still looking for the revolution

and all i see is celebrity."

  • He has always been an artist that makes songs that make people think. All the greatist hits really paint pictures in your head as you listen. His voice has gone these days, but I still think he can still sing. He is making some great music these days.

  • bob looks extremely uncomfortable about everything that is said about him.

  • What's the first song playing during the video Montague?

  • the man in the long black coat

  • Gregory Peck flubs the "Brownsville Girl" lyrics and Bob Dylan, at 1:21, responds with a queer, quizzical double eyebrow raise.

Then Peck, at 1:47, finishes by summing Dylan up saying "Bob Dylan's never been about get out of town before the shooting starts."

To this Dylan purses his lips, raises his eyes as if to say "Oh, really?"(O RLY as the kids/owls say)

Then the wide shot shows a giant black woman (Carol Dennis?) nodding her head, seconding the sentiment - "Mmhmm, he's just like that."

  • Oh man: the "giant black woman" is the great Jessye Norman!

  • "Snot-nosed kid" was NOT referring to Dylan!

  • Whats the relevance?

  • President Kennedy calling me up

what do we need to make the country grow

Anita Ekberg, Brigitte Bardot, Hillary Clinton

  • Dylan is the man

  • Only Dylan himself has the ability to write words powerful enough to sufficiently explain his timeless genius. But because of his glorious lack of ego we will never hear them.

  • well put.

  • That audience looked up at him with such adoration. African Americans knew he was on their side. He took others back to their youth. Peck speaks with such tender respect. I've read Dylan predominates onthe web. He's a tower of charisma. He has said he could never express himself as he does via his art. That's why he looks almost expressionless imo. And would you believe I'm a new Dylan fan? :)

  • if that's so, let me do you a favor and tell you to check out his bootlegs. i envy what you will be able to discover!

  • Thanks for the heads up. Yep, the discoveries seem endless for this 64-yr old who was introduced to him in-depth via "No Direction Home." Last night I was in a packed house for the legend at RIT. His band is ASTOUNDING--his harmonica is still sweet. He began with "Rainy Day Women..." After about an hour and a half, no one wanted him to leave!

  • The discoveries are as close to endless as is possible for this legend of all legends

  • When I was brought to tears via the Scorcese docu, I felt like no one would respond like I did. I was slightly wrong? :) These words are poignant enough to write down: "In him we hear the echo of old American voices: Whitman, and Mark Twain; blues singers, fiddlers and balladeers. Bob Dylan's voice reaches just as high, and it will linger just as long."

  • well deserved award and more. Bob has been the voice of our collective conscience. He's the ruler of this planet...:-) Yeah, he's modest and does get embarrased !

  • Wow, what an awesome video.

  • bob dylan is the best EVER

  • Bob looks soo nervous!!!! He deserved this award... He is a GENIUS!!!! EVEN TODAY!!!!

  • It's funny how it's so obvious who he respects... this is exactly the kind of thing that makes him cringe, but clearly he respects Gregory Peck, so he's putting up with it.

  • I saw this months ago and was very impressed. Since ,I have been introduced to " Most of the time" I think it fits in perfectly with the retrospective. Fantastic!

  • When I heard in this video for the first time "I can survive, I can endure..." I had to seek it out. And so I found another gem. ("Most of the Time")

  • that whole album is a gem ("oh mercy"). there's another song in that documentary from that album, "man in the long black coat".

  • Thanks for the heads up!

  • Best Dylan solo album of 1980s, given that it's his least prominent decade musically. To say that about "Oh Mercy" knocks you off any pedestal on which you've ever stood because it's still one hell of a musical achievement.

  • Is there a way to see a better quality video of this?

  • What was that first song played during the video they showed??

  • "Man in the long black coat", from the record "Oh Mercy".

  • Haha. Poor guy, he gets so embarrassed.

  • About Time thanks Bob you have given so much meaning to our lives

  • Bob looks a bit embarrassed and awkward. i guess he will never really know how important he is.

  • "I guess he will never really know how important he is." Beautiful, insightful statement.

  • Iv listened to and discovered Bob Dylan since i was 12 years old and he's been, hands down, the greatest inspirationn of my life. Lustre5, enjoy every second you discover a new gem song from the master

  • Thanks bibsweetrock--your screen name suits you. Just read a comment from Dylan's mother (she died in 2000) saying that her son is full of compassion and that he has no ego, and that "everyone should have a son like Bobby."

  • Don't you just love him.

  • Indeed...

  • Right when the video tribute ends, and you see a long shot of him in the balcony, doesn't it look as if he's whiping away tears? I think he was very moved. Uncomfortable, but moved.

  • Congrats Bob! Keep the songs coming!

  • We just can`t get enough of Bob. Hundred years from now people will still think of him as a giant. He were there when I was a little kid, & he`s still around, hopefully for many years to come. God bless you Bob.

  • Oh I just love to watch his expresions..

  • I love ya bobby.. You are the God for me

  • what a lovely clip - a man touched by God

  • Dylan is a star!

  • Dylan's discomfiture is linked to his innate shyness, which goes back to his incredulity at landing on this planet. Sometimes the shyness is mistaken for aloofness or even snobbery (Groom's Still Waiting at the Altar). Here (looking down from above and therefore choosing to look up!) he can't get out of it and takes the medicine.

  • bill looked a little stiff sitting next to bob. "i'm not worthy!"

  • he's pulled into it without any control, too much for even the bob

  • he looks soooo uneasy! i still dont think he realises how much he means to alot of people.

  • i agree... but he is lovely in that way i would say

  • Lauren Bacall kisses Dylan, in the midst of all the blather. Don't you just feel it?

  • Thanks!

  • What's the song that starts playing at about 4:30, and the song that starts playing at 6:14. Sorry just started listneing to Dylan, a couple of months back.

  • 4:30 is "She Belongs To Me" and 6:14 is "Most of the Time"...two of my absolute favorites! Enjoy the Dylan!

  • I've never seen Dylan more uncomfortable than I did here.

  • what was the song that opened the documentary?

  • At the very beginning of the doc, the song is "Man in the long Black Coat", but it's only played for about 20 or so seconds. Might be the best song on "Oh Mercy".

  • Indeed, thank you Mr. Dylan, master of words and tunes.

  • I am grateful for the work Bob has given you & me, and to be more alive for it.

  • Well said, well said, Bruce.

  • gregory peck is right on the money, 'his voice reaches as high and will endure as long' as whitman & mark twain, not to mention emerson & guthrie, but in the end, he's the greatest of the greats. it's our honor to live, coincidentally, in bob dylan's time.

  • I love Bob Dylan's music! It makes my heart feel good that he is being honored. Especially in this age of awful, electronic rap music. Bless Bob Dylan! He's cute, even in his older age :)

  • there is not a single person living in america who has not been influenced by bob dylan wheather they know it or not

  • I have loved him forever. His looks, his voice, his music...I am not alone. Everyone who loves Dylan thinks he/she owns him a little.

  • It reminds me of what Nina Simone said: "Bob Dylan is the closest thing we have to a saint in America." And a kiss from Bacall? Please. We should live so long.

  • Don't let the fire die - keep on keeping on.

  • a tour de force, bless this man

  • Thanx imwatchingu90 :P

  • what song is the first song they play when they start to show the videodocumentary? Does anyone know?

  • Man in Long Black Coat from Oh Mercy, excellent. I love this montage and the music; the scene looking out from behind him on stage in front of that huge crowd leaves me speechless.

  • Amazing! Excellent! Long live Bob! If you have any other Kennedy Center Honors broadcasts, please, please, please upload them!

  • Why is everone trying to talk about him like you know his deep dark secerets. Goodness. Bob Dylan is..

  • if you notice bob squirms then reacts when peck states that "Bob Dylan was never one to leave town before the shooting starts"

clearly he was surprised at Peck's insightfully poetic look at his career

even so he was clearly flattered judging by his hand gestures as Peck left the stage

  • bob is god!!!! will be the biggest musical influence ever.. never surpassed...dylan forever..

  • He is so awesome.

  • He never liked to be famous. And he didn't know this when he was young. Yes, his words are poetry and his music is straight and goes deep in our hearts. Everybody knows him. If he just wanted to get famous, he never would have wrote this songs.

But it's his fault. You can't expect to be famous and nobody knows you. It's a kind of tragedy. Dylan fought a lot with thtat.

But the gift, that he gave us, he cannot undo. Sorry, Bob.

  • He looks so embarassed, But he loves it really!!

    God bless this man!

  • embarassed or expressionless

  • He was on the bottle at the time i think - he's much younger now.

  • Little of both probably

  • mr.dylan..??.....expressionlesss ??...don't think so.

  • aw, Bob should have at least smiled while Gregory was flattering his ego. Mayeb he was squirmng because he feels old.

  • Lovely to see Gregory Peck up there, saluting Bob and Bob squirming so miserably.

  • Great clip - never seen it before.

    His humilty is his greatness.

But he needs to know that his record sales don't account for the affection ( not obsession ) that he has inspired.

Then again, he's a cynical old bugger!

  • Yeah Bob is so uncomfortable but everything Peck says is true. Great video of two great men.

  • Hey lustre5, more good news. My cousin says her machine learning matches you and another Dylan fan perfectly. He's RightWingedBob (RWB. Twins separated at birth? We'all should get together for a beer after work. Oops, I forgot, y'all dont work.

  • Also, a message for Professor X. My cousin and her collegial team do enjoy the creative names he gives to his stinkels. Beats just giving y'all a number.

  • I've commented on this video before but I'm doing it again. It just amazes me how much influence one man can have upon the world.

  • Rock on, Bobster!

  • If you look at Bill's face you can tell even he's sorta like "OMG! Don't screw it up Peck!"

  • thats his mom?!
