Haha you have to be just plain stupid to say Steve plays with no feeling and this is just "shred." This is some of the most expressive juicy phrases that ever came out of a guitar. People really need to stop listening to the same 4 Gilmour/Page/Slash solos and evolve. You are truly missing out.

I agree with a lot of that. My philosophy is why spend all that time and money on trying to sound/be like someone else when you could have developed your own sound/style. I don't think I'll ever understand those people. I love vai at the mo, I think his playing is pretty much flawless but I wouldn't want to clone him.
Well said, people criticize Vai for his use of effects but it's actually really hard to use them tastefully and efficiently. I saw a video of a song that Vai recorded 20 years ago off of Passion where he played it note for note and with all the fury and perfection as from the day he wrote it. He is more than an effects player, he is technically amazing as well. Even his stuff with Roth and Whitesnake was equally amazing, made them better bands!

Steve makes guitar-centric instrumental music - Lynch mob made vocal-centric, riff based music. I understand that you prefer Lynch mob... and that's perfectly ok... but I prefer Vai. He takes guitar playing to a purely spritual level where he tries to unite his perceived form with the vibrations that exist in all things; especially music.
micheal angelo batio plays that way because he is payed to i have a friend who met him while he was at a tradeshow and did not recognize him in the hallway of the hotel without all of those hair extentions and makeup on, and he said that he hates playing that way all that useless solo but that is what they pay him to do, and that is what ppl want to see.

I think that Micheal has feeling, I think that all musicians posses feeling (Notice I wrote musicians) I mean his songs have all come from some part of his mind which would have been influenced by how he was feeling at that time, his emotions would pass on to his playing. That is how I think, sometimes you need to see past the music to understand the complexity gone in to creating it and the emotional diversity between the songs, anger is a feeling to!

there's a another point: most of MAB's solos end up with 3 notes forward and backwards by using hammerings and pull offs. the difference between him and steve is clearly shown in this video. steve is much more creative. creativity is a way to show your feelings. MAB doesn't show any creativity

The guy does one thing. Shred. He's not Musical at least not in a rhythmical sense and has the worst stage presence that I've ever seen. He couldn't write a good song if his life depended on it.

he does the harmonic on one string but puts his toung on another string. than he uses the whammy pedal with the effect that you can here in the "killing in the name of" solo by "rage against the machine." you can see other ways he does it by watching "Steve vai,sustainer trick"
It's just a stage trick, his tongue isn't really doing anything. He's using a Fernandes Sustainer to pull off the effect. If you watch he pressing a button on the front of his guitar when he does it.
His tongue isn't doing anything. He has a Fernandes sustainer put in his JEM. When his tongue almost touches the strings, watch his right hand. It flips a switch that activates the harmonic. If you need more proof, look up the video "Steve Vai Sustainer Trick"
according to the "live at the astoria" dvd commentary vai himself says the soft tip of his tongue actually hits the harmonic. the sustainer just let's him hold the note for as long as he wants.
actually, his tongue is doing something! his tongue is striking the string its just that the whammy pedal makes it go all high pitch. so its pretty fuckin sweet if you ask me!

he actually uses the fernandes sustainer.
he does the harmonic on one string but puts his toung on another string. than he uses the whammy pedal with the effect that you can here in the "killing in the name of" solo by "rage against the machine." you can see other ways he does it by watching "Steve vai,sustainer trick"

It's just a stage trick, his tongue isn't really doing anything. He's using a Fernandes Sustainer to pull off the effect. If you watch he pressing a button on the front of his guitar when he does it.

His tongue isn't doing anything. He has a Fernandes sustainer put in his JEM. When his tongue almost touches the strings, watch his right hand. It flips a switch that activates the harmonic. If you need more proof, look up the video "Steve Vai Sustainer Trick"

according to the "live at the astoria" dvd commentary vai himself says the soft tip of his tongue actually hits the harmonic. the sustainer just let's him hold the note for as long as he wants.
