Barry Gray must have been a tough boss.... listen to the poor guy on the tuba, pomp-pomping away with that riff for all he's worth, and struggling to keep up. Almost impossible to play that instrument that quickly. (Listening again, it might be a trombone, but the same applies!)
The minute the song starts, you get this essence of power that you didn't often get in British theme songs back then. Even though the shows were great, Barry Gray is an underrated composer. He should be remembered as TV's answer to John Williams.
In 1965 I was a kid in a snobbish Classical Music school in Manhattan and I recall thinking "This music in MUCH to good for JUST a kid's puppet show." But Hell-- I watched it religiously because it was that original and that good.
I'm from America, and I used to watch this show on an American children's TV show. I also read somewhere that the Mike Sammes Singers were chorus singers in the Beatles song "I am the Walrus." Is that true?
Made in Slough, y'know!

The great Barry Gray at his best.
Pumping brass and manic drumming that makes a lot of other 60s music seem tame.

Stingray's a very good show. One of the first, if not the first British show to be filmed in colour. Awesome stuff!

Action shows of the 60's didn't screw around. No silly rock and roll or screaming acid inspired crap. Just straight up hard driving intensity.
