5.7mm is overrated, expensive, and the hype is the only thing that sells. It's designed to be an armor piercing round for smaller guns. 5.56 has far better qualities for the purpose those two cartridges were built for.
Everytime I see somebody with the "jams everytime" etc complaint against the AR, I get the idea that they have never used them in real life. ARs made after 1970 are very good. I've been working with them for 17years& I think they're good. In fact, the people whom I know for a fact have worked with them have positive comments about them. It was so far ahead of its time that even 40something yrs later it's hard to find a weapon that just thoroughly outclasses it.
@oeyesea Personally, I have to say that the modern day AK outpasses the AR. However, I completely agree that the AR is a highly reliable system. As long as you maintain it and clean it regularly like you should EVERY rifle, it shouldn't fail. Many people blame the rifle when it's their own fault. Kind of like how our economic condition is blamed purely on govt.
my dad just got me a Bushmaster AR-15 ( looks just like a M16A2) i love it i have it sighted for 120 yards. its a perfect rifle clean it and it will never fail :) i'm so happy i got my gun liscence so i could have real firarms. i used to have airsoft. (still do) mainly for there realistic nature. now all i have to do is wait one more month for my Bday then i'm enlisting in the Army. btw thanks for your service

I prefer a 16" barrel over the 14.5. Wasn't it when they started fielding M4s that they decided to change the twist and go to a 62 grain?
Not sure.
I say you have to choose the right tool for the job. 5.56 is effective and the best part is you can carry more ammo vs larger calibers. I think I'd like to try out the Beowulf upper. Have you seen what that rifle does to a vehicle. Wow.
I don't know why people would denigrate the DPMS (Panther Arms) rifles. I have a Bull Twenty, and the quality of the rifle was amazingly apparent right out of the box.
It is also a phenomenal range and varmint gun when coupled to my Buckmaster and PEPR.
I have 1 FTF out of 1500+ rounds, and it was a Wolf 55gr with a well indented primer. After waiting for cookoff, I re-fed it and it went bang.
Is boiled linseed oil good for a very dry rough stock? I really don't want to stain the wood with any particular shade because I like the classic med/light dark color, however, boiled linseed oil is kinda yellow, how do I go about this, please help, thank you.
@SSSDiaz7 BLO is a great choice for a stock. I routinely rub down my Czech Mauser with BLO its a great way to protect the wood, it doesn't really change the color. Added bonus your gun smells good too! Use a shop rag and rub in two or three coats and let it air dry. Careful not to wad up the rag and toss it in a corner as it may catch fire. I think he's got a video on doing a Tung Oil finish. BLO finish is essentially the same.
@soloban81 I got a czech Mauser myself, and I am kicking myself relentlessly for not having ordered atleast 2 more from AIM surplus when they had them available. Mine is a VZ-24, got it in what seemed to be unissued condition, it was stated as VG+ and I got a hand pick. Anyways, I get 1-2'' groups at 100yds with surplus Yugo or Romanian ammo, with open sights on a $10 strap on bipod. These rifles are real shooters, am I right?
@SSSDiaz7 Definitely! I've only been shooting reloads and haven't quite found the right load but still a good shooter. I put a Mojo MicroClick rear sight on mine so I have a sight picture like an M1 Garand on mine. Quite nice!
Man i stil love the M14, i have one of the newer Norinco built versions, and i can't get enough of that rifle, especialy if i'm using it for deer hunting, in the northern parts of Canada where i live. Nothin like good ol' NATO .308.
The AR/M16 was invented for Air Base Defense, originally they wanted a lightweight, smaller caliber weapon for that purpose. The rest of the military just adopted it because they were in need of a new weapon and you know how the military likes things to be uniform.
@glock19x300 That's true. The air force actually rejected the M14 when it first came out because of weight and chose to retain the M1 Carbine until they got the M16.
@esh325 AR10s are okay, but I generally subscribe to the opinion that M14s are much more accurate...I'm sure you could turn either design into a space rifle.

@scargill8 Hmm I would not think so. For the weight, it's not practical. He would have to carry separate ammo, possibly different mags, of course a scope, etc. This is why in the military one generally has a "designated marksman" with a .308 or at least a rifle version of a 5.56 with all the fixin's for a long-rang gun.
@MrSKSkill I have seen max 160cm tall recon guy carry 40-45kg backbag, pkm (7,62x53r) machinegun and ammo. Need to get in to shape if cant carry enough ammo and only hits count. :) But there is not one "best" caliber, different evinroments need different calibers...
@99infantry Ohh yeah man, I know its a good investment. I like how small, compact, and light it is, with a 8 round mag! How much did yours run? We got them down here for around 275-300
@MrSKSkill They are about 300euros here+65euros for license. It is pretty accurate, more than i expect. But gun laws getting bad, hard to get even 22's now days.
Was there problem, with not chromelined chamber with first vietnam war era rifles? Heard something about that. I like to shoot ar15 in range but wouldnt go to war with one, ar10 maybe but think there is better ones like sako rk95,m14 :). I think 5,56nato is pretty useless in woods and in finnish army we trained to fight or hit and run from woods. Back 1990:s we did some tests and set targets behind trees, dosnt really need big tree to stop 5,56 bullet and 7,62x39 or 7,62x51 went straigh trough.
Really good overview on the AR series of rifles, it's honestly not my favorite either really. I like the AR10 more. Maybe with the history you could went into pre m16 like the AR15 prototype and AR10 prototypes.
@mcwolves3 Depending on how much clearance a loaded mag would have, all it would do is not eject and stove pipe. The ejection port is the mag well so it would need to be clear.
@JungeHitze Well see...We have all kinds of firearms to talk about here, but I'm not going to make a video unless I feel like I can contribute something to the internet community.
Why is it that currently every time I see an AR-15 video people are using 14.5, 16 inch long barrels in an M4 format? Does no one care about the lower velocities ?
@jubbles2343 I think it's a matter of personal preference for most people. That's the nice thing about the AR....A barrel change is a snap and you have a whole bunch of options. A suppresor would be a nice addition to a short barreled rifle.
@TheSouthernGentleman Yes. You can get sporter versions of the Vietnam era M16 with the triangular handguards, carry handle, etc. and you can get basic Bushmasters in the A2 pattern with longer stock, round handguards, and carry handle. The problem with a "standard" M16 varient is that there are lot of changes throughout it's service life, unlike the AK47 which for the most part, is the same basic gun.
@Iraqveteran8888 That the AK has not been tweaked much (other than going from a milled to a stamped receiver) and the AR has had some many changes made through out its service life says a lot about the designs.
@willwood487 I will as soon as this video sinks in for awhile. Don't want to overload people with stuff. I wanted to do this basic overview just to lay a few points down so I don't have to cover it in the video you decribe. There are a lot of ARs out there, and many of them are of good quality. Stay tuned for it.
some of the original problems with the M-16 were an aluminium bolt with no forward assist. On top of that training in proper maintainence was lacking.of course the powder in the cartridge was also a problem, very dirty. The M-16 A-1 came back into service with a Steel bolt and forward assist , along with a cleaning kit. And yes there was a preference for the AK because it just plain worked. it was simple to use and would operate even after being buried in the mud for days.Therewereplentyaround:)
Not everyone can afford to go out and spend the money on an AR right now with this economy. That being said, a used SKS or AK would be a good addition for those that can't afford an AR. Or even a $200 twelve gauge from Wal-Mart will do. Something is better than nothing at all. Don't worry, if the shit does hit the fan there will be plenty of rifles and ammo laying around! Then you can take your pick.
you seem to know alot about guns so I hope you can help just really what oil and how much oil alot or just a little its easy to clean but oiling thing I dont get I see people just drench there bolt in 5w-30 lol motor oil and run I herd its better to run wet and dirty rather than dry and jam so let me know thanks stay safe
@miltnxc123 In terms of oiling, don't use so much that it turns your bolt carrier into a carbon cake. I put about two drops of oil on all the major camming surfaces, but on my rifles, the carrier only has a small amount of anti seize lube.
awesome video man thanks I love my ar15 its the best weapon I have ever used but I still had a few questions whats the difference between the A2 and the A3 and what do you think the A4 will be and I bought my rifle off the internet and what sucks I cant really find the right way to oil this weapon its like everyone has a different ways of doing it, it did not come with a manual I see vids of people using wheel bearing greese and motor oil lol but I just want to know how much and where at to oil
@burgerboy13 No I don't. I think every combat rifle should be a 7.62x51mm but thats just my opinion. In terms of kicking down doors and clearing tight spaces, the AR platform is perfect. The .50 Beowulf is a great package to have as a companion for the basic 5.56 offering.
Eric once again another good video, thanks for your time and efforts. I'm here in Reno, NV selling at the big Reno Gun show held four times a year, purging off the excess, I put four of my AR's up to see what kind of interest they draw. As much as I'd hate to part with them, I really enjoy building them more than I enjoy shooting them to tell you the truth, part of that comes from the distance I have to travel to go shooting each time.
Original M-16's did not have a chrome lined chamber and barrel, which caused corrosion problems, along with the fact that proper cleaning kits and lubricants were not issued. Adding to that was a type of gunpowder that increased the rate of fire and resulted in excessive fouling.
The M16 is the most commonly manufactured 5.56x45mm rifle in the world.
-- Great job sir! -- QUESTION: I was interested in the M&P MOE (Magpul), but from what I've noticed, they don't seemed to come with the Chrome-lined barrel. Is that always the case? -- Just wondering...
@AppalachianFreedom To be completely honest, I don't have an answer for your question. I've never had a problem in terms of serviceability and accuracy when it comes to chrome lined versus otherwise.
good vid been planin on buildin an ar do you know anything about the fit of the noveske uppers and lowers just lookin for a good fit from stripped recievers thanx! just wanted to get the m4 feed ramps with it..
Also, McNamara didn't issue out the M-16 with a chrome layered barrel, which is essential for Jungle type terrain warfare. Otherwise, great piece of weaponry.
I really love these type rifles (m16/m4/AR) but they are kind of under-rated if you ask me, with all the rumors going around about them being unreliable :D
That first AR had an A1 carry handle, with fixed elevation sights. And it's weird since it's got an A2 shell deflector.
And another reason for the Marines to go to the A2 platform was to have a longer stock ( A1 is shorter ) and a heavier BBL for more accurate, prolonged fire.
This wose pritey entristing stufe.the sekint rifel you held I did not know that it cud be interchangubel like that.I just think thats cool.I like the M-4 M-16 and AR-15.I woud say you are pritey lukey to have a rifel like that wear you live now I think you live in gorja I think but for me in CT I am not alowd to have some thing like that.Becuse of the new lows in CT,I just fownd out that a fyou days a go.I dont no wene it came to afeckt but thats what it is hear.
@nicklesaj05 I would be concerned about magazine price/availability if I got one of those. For a .223, I'd go with something that takes AR mags. Otherwise just get a regular AK.
@evilassaultweapon yeah, I've researched them a bit, and mags are expensive. There is a conversion kit for them though that allows them to take ar mags.
@nicklesaj05 I hadn't heard of that kit. In that case, it would be an interesting gun, being a .223 AK that takes cheap AR mags. I would still probably buy a 7.62 or 5.45 AK if I bought one. All three of those cartridges are plenty cheap, and the AK thrives on cheap ammo, probably the best thing about it.
I think AR-15's are cool. It just annoys me that hard core AR-15 people feel the need to add all these grips, sights, deep fryers, and fax machines to the side of their guns to make them think they can shoot better.
It was primarily the colt's that failed.Do to a machining foul up at the plant. The tolerances were to tight.Once they heated up they would jam if they were not cleaned to perfection, which any soldier in the field can tell you is not possible. Pete Seward was the man who brought that to attention and was then fired from his position at the factory. However that problem came and went within a few months.Troops in combat to this day ask for a heavier cal for knock down factor. Yes I still want 1
@IsbianBlackheart too bad the 556 is hard hitting, in vietnam they had vietnamese who they shot in the chest and were missing fist sized chunks out of their back, it hits very hard, if it hits you, you will die.
So what is your opinion of the breakdown and feild stripping of the M16/ Ar15 platform, if someone just picked up a m16 with little firearm experience would they be able to strip it it easily? I remember watching my uncle strip it and it really looked like a bitch to clean, let it be known it was an A1 triangular grip.
@mjolnirv17777777 It's a bitch at first, but once you do it a few times, it's like anything else you get proficient at it. The AR15's have really grown on me quite a bit and I like to build my own in several configurations, from the early Vietnam era to the most current configurations, feel free to check out my channel I have several videos on the subject.
why are you not a fan of the ar15?

bhbuckwheat 1 year ago
@bhbuckwheat About an hour drive from Macon. My favorite rifle is one that kills stuff. LOL
Seriously if I were stranded on an island with only one rifle it would be an AK47

@Iraqveteran8888 good answere and i may have to make a trip sometime

I don't believe there's a nicer looking rifle made. Wish I could own a full auto or three round burst rifle. Great video.
paininthe10 1 year ago
@paininthe10 You don't need a full auto rifle to be effective. In Iraq, I rarely used the burst on my rifle.
Iraqveteran8888 1 year ago
@Iraqveteran8888 you should do a series on nato only firearms.

Iraqveteran8888 1 year ago
Why is it that currently every time I see an AR-15 video people are using 14.5, 16 inch long barrels in an M4 format? Does no one care about the lower velocities ?
jubbles2343 1 year ago
@jubbles2343 I think it's a matter of personal preference for most people. That's the nice thing about the AR....A barrel change is a snap and you have a whole bunch of options. A suppresor would be a nice addition to a short barreled rifle.
Iraqveteran8888 1 year ago
Do they make just a straight forward military style AR? Like in the way that most semi auto AK variants are?
TheSouthernGentleman 1 year ago
@TheSouthernGentleman Yes. You can get sporter versions of the Vietnam era M16 with the triangular handguards, carry handle, etc. and you can get basic Bushmasters in the A2 pattern with longer stock, round handguards, and carry handle. The problem with a "standard" M16 varient is that there are lot of changes throughout it's service life, unlike the AK47 which for the most part, is the same basic gun.
Iraqveteran8888 1 year ago
@Iraqveteran8888 That the AK has not been tweaked much (other than going from a milled to a stamped receiver) and the AR has had some many changes made through out its service life says a lot about the designs.
TheSouthernGentleman 1 year ago
@TheSouthernGentleman This is true. The AR is a wonderful platform for a combat weapon, but I respect the simple effectiveness of the AK47.
Iraqveteran8888 1 year ago
any chance of yoi doing a what to look for on an AR video kinda like the what to look for in an AK video you did?
willwood487 1 year ago
@willwood487 I will as soon as this video sinks in for awhile. Don't want to overload people with stuff. I wanted to do this basic overview just to lay a few points down so I don't have to cover it in the video you decribe. There are a lot of ARs out there, and many of them are of good quality. Stay tuned for it.
Iraqveteran8888 1 year ago
@Iraqveteran8888 I will the AR is my dream gun! Thanks.

what do you think about the preban colt ar15 hbar 20' sporter competition rifle?
basskillaz 1 year ago
@basskillaz Awesome rifles. Built well, and with proper handloads, they are tack drivers.
Iraqveteran8888 1 year ago
some of the original problems with the M-16 were an aluminium bolt with no forward assist. On top of that training in proper maintainence was lacking.of course the powder in the cartridge was also a problem, very dirty. The M-16 A-1 came back into service with a Steel bolt and forward assist , along with a cleaning kit. And yes there was a preference for the AK because it just plain worked. it was simple to use and would operate even after being buried in the mud for days.Therewereplentyaround:)
taeim43 1 year ago
Not everyone can afford to go out and spend the money on an AR right now with this economy. That being said, a used SKS or AK would be a good addition for those that can't afford an AR. Or even a $200 twelve gauge from Wal-Mart will do. Something is better than nothing at all. Don't worry, if the shit does hit the fan there will be plenty of rifles and ammo laying around! Then you can take your pick.
DangerousDude2010 1 year ago
you seem to know alot about guns so I hope you can help just really what oil and how much oil alot or just a little its easy to clean but oiling thing I dont get I see people just drench there bolt in 5w-30 lol motor oil and run I herd its better to run wet and dirty rather than dry and jam so let me know thanks stay safe
miltnxc123 1 year ago
@miltnxc123 In terms of oiling, don't use so much that it turns your bolt carrier into a carbon cake. I put about two drops of oil on all the major camming surfaces, but on my rifles, the carrier only has a small amount of anti seize lube.
Iraqveteran8888 1 year ago
awesome video man thanks I love my ar15 its the best weapon I have ever used but I still had a few questions whats the difference between the A2 and the A3 and what do you think the A4 will be and I bought my rifle off the internet and what sucks I cant really find the right way to oil this weapon its like everyone has a different ways of doing it, it did not come with a manual I see vids of people using wheel bearing greese and motor oil lol but I just want to know how much and where at to oil
miltnxc123 1 year ago
Do you personal like the .223 round given your experience with it while serving?
burgerboy13 1 year ago
@burgerboy13 No I don't. I think every combat rifle should be a 7.62x51mm but thats just my opinion. In terms of kicking down doors and clearing tight spaces, the AR platform is perfect. The .50 Beowulf is a great package to have as a companion for the basic 5.56 offering.
Iraqveteran8888 1 year ago
Eric once again another good video, thanks for your time and efforts. I'm here in Reno, NV selling at the big Reno Gun show held four times a year, purging off the excess, I put four of my AR's up to see what kind of interest they draw. As much as I'd hate to part with them, I really enjoy building them more than I enjoy shooting them to tell you the truth, part of that comes from the distance I have to travel to go shooting each time.

TheHiddenPart 1 year ago
Original M-16's did not have a chrome lined chamber and barrel, which caused corrosion problems, along with the fact that proper cleaning kits and lubricants were not issued. Adding to that was a type of gunpowder that increased the rate of fire and resulted in excessive fouling.
The M16 is the most commonly manufactured 5.56x45mm rifle in the world.
spacemanspiff2012 1 year ago
-- Great job sir! -- QUESTION: I was interested in the M&P MOE (Magpul), but from what I've noticed, they don't seemed to come with the Chrome-lined barrel. Is that always the case? -- Just wondering...
AppalachianFreedom 1 year ago
@AppalachianFreedom To be completely honest, I don't have an answer for your question. I've never had a problem in terms of serviceability and accuracy when it comes to chrome lined versus otherwise.

It was due to Secretary of State McNarmara the reason for the failure early on when the weapon was firing the bad ammo that was a white tie buck up.

The only thing I don't like about the carbine style barrel is the bounce. I much prefer that heavier barrel of the 16. .308 is always good too. :)
chop98 1 year ago
Man, that 57 upper sure does sound "clanky" when it cycles.
MonteBusa 1 year ago
Also, McNamara didn't issue out the M-16 with a chrome layered barrel, which is essential for Jungle type terrain warfare. Otherwise, great piece of weaponry.

Great video IV. Really.
Although may I point out something?
That first AR had an A1 carry handle, with fixed elevation sights. And it's weird since it's got an A2 shell deflector.
And another reason for the Marines to go to the A2 platform was to have a longer stock ( A1 is shorter ) and a heavier BBL for more accurate, prolonged fire.
TheHiddenPart 1 year ago
@TheHiddenPart I never had much experience with the A1 directly so anything you can contribute is great. Thanks
Iraqveteran8888 1 year ago
@Iraqveteran8888 Never mind, the gross of my experience comes from Internet reading and forum discussions... it's purely theoretical.
You have the most time behind the trigger, that's for sure!
TheHiddenPart 1 year ago
@TheHiddenPart No you are correct. The A1 butt stock is shorter, so you are correct in that the A2 butt stock is longer

nicklesaj05 1 year ago
@nicklesaj05 I would be concerned about magazine price/availability if I got one of those. For a .223, I'd go with something that takes AR mags. Otherwise just get a regular AK.
evilassaultweapon 1 year ago
@evilassaultweapon yeah, I've researched them a bit, and mags are expensive. There is a conversion kit for them though that allows them to take ar mags.
nicklesaj05 1 year ago
@nicklesaj05 I hadn't heard of that kit. In that case, it would be an interesting gun, being a .223 AK that takes cheap AR mags. I would still probably buy a 7.62 or 5.45 AK if I bought one. All three of those cartridges are plenty cheap, and the AK thrives on cheap ammo, probably the best thing about it.

Nipples... Is it cold in there?
aphtj 1 year ago
I think AR-15's are cool. It just annoys me that hard core AR-15 people feel the need to add all these grips, sights, deep fryers, and fax machines to the side of their guns to make them think they can shoot better.

Iwillbedurnd 1 year ago
It was primarily the colt's that failed.Do to a machining foul up at the plant. The tolerances were to tight.Once they heated up they would jam if they were not cleaned to perfection, which any soldier in the field can tell you is not possible. Pete Seward was the man who brought that to attention and was then fired from his position at the factory. However that problem came and went within a few months.Troops in combat to this day ask for a heavier cal for knock down factor. Yes I still want 1
IsbianBlackheart 1 year ago
@IsbianBlackheart too bad the 556 is hard hitting, in vietnam they had vietnamese who they shot in the chest and were missing fist sized chunks out of their back, it hits very hard, if it hits you, you will die.

Good overview. Good for folks like me who know little about the AR-15, and who are confused about the profusion of AR-15 platforms.
TheSolitarySojourner 1 year ago
So what is your opinion of the breakdown and feild stripping of the M16/ Ar15 platform, if someone just picked up a m16 with little firearm experience would they be able to strip it it easily? I remember watching my uncle strip it and it really looked like a bitch to clean, let it be known it was an A1 triangular grip.
mjolnirv17777777 1 year ago
@mjolnirv17777777 It's a bitch at first, but once you do it a few times, it's like anything else you get proficient at it. The AR15's have really grown on me quite a bit and I like to build my own in several configurations, from the early Vietnam era to the most current configurations, feel free to check out my channel I have several videos on the subject.

I saw on the history channel that in vietnam they averaged 5000 rounds a kill. Somuch for 1 shot 1 kill!
Iwillbedurnd 1 year ago
@Iwillbedurnd lotta spray & pray lol
Iwillbedurnd 1 year ago
@Iwillbedurnd no the average was around 115,000 rounds to one kill. if it was 5,000 thatd be great and our M-16s would still be in automatic.
