They were running XP for half a decade. The consumer was begging for a change. The only reason vista hasn't met expectations is because of Macintosh's advertising making it seem as though Vista was an error plagued disaster.
Not this consumer, XP runs like a charm and so does Win2000 for that matter. Besides, Microsoft's main customer are businesses and they have no desire to be forced into needless upgrades that require more hardware and updated software.

im not sure that Microsoft's main consumers are businesses... after all a big corporation wont buy one copy of an operating system per computer when buying, its usually a corporate edition that covers them all. nowhere near as expencive.
if you run a small accounting firm or something and XP works for you that's great.. but that dosnt mean you need to hold the whole world back from utilizing its new technology to the full for your sake.

Vista's speech recognition is far from fine. I've used it on my computer and although it does work more than half the time it's still not good enough to use. Whether your navigating through Windows or writing a report it's not good. Try saying "I scream" or "Ice cream" in word and see how that turns out. There's so many bugs to it.
You just probably plugged it in and ran it. Use the program "Train your computer to better understand you" it is annoying, but after 2 times the recognition has improved drastically, after 4 it is almost failsafe.
In this preview, when the computer got crushed, it shouldn't have, for the new feature should have been like super strength or something. Like , a computer that is hard to break.
I just want it to be reliable not flash just relianle and faster. Actually that eye candy has a function. Besides feeling more organic and natural, the special effects also help convey the information more effectively, as opposed to classically popping out a window with no transition. You get a better sense of where the information is coming from.
And I'm a guy that has cracked dongle protection in assembly language (among other things) and I still would find it very useful.
I want my operating system to be able to show different layers of input, from the most organic and natural, to the most low level and cryptic. My mind is not always in "l33t mode", so I would definetly want the OS to do the thinking on occasion.
And it would be a waste NOT to use the hardware, as UI graphic layers can always lend their time to other tasks.

It always starts off with wonderful ideas such as these, but half of them don't make it even to the drawing board, let alone into our homes; which is a real sham in my opinion. There are also too many people out there who would not enjoy this kind of integration.
Actually, what you see there is M$ trying to make Windows even more "n00bs-friendly" (like Apple). N0obs-friendly + windows = "n00bs unable to keep a comip secure" which means there will be more annoying security. It will become even more bloated of security and it may even become so "secure" than any tweaking you can easily do now in XP and Vista may become almost impossible unless you're a very advanced user.
And that's exactly what you hate about Mac, you have to work the way Mac OS wants you to unless you're a very advanced user and tweak the kernel extensions (.kext). Windows will become the same because M$ wants it to be more noobs-friendly but on top of that, it will have more security annoying crap.

Apple has seen stuff like this - and they are now working on getting voice recognition in to the next versions of OS X. The only reason they manage to get a step a head is because MS releases their ideas way too far ahead, and since MS is so big, ideas get leaked. Apple, on the other hand keeps everything very hush hush...
Apple already had voice recognition in MacOS in the 90s, and they included it in MacOS X. It was a good first step back when it was first introduced, and it's fun to play with, but it's been standing still for a while now.
The car updating you on notifications is rather stupid though, that's what I have my cellphone for. we all know we will just plug stuff into the neck anyway like in GITS in the future.
This is all jsut fancy schmancy eyecandy, if you really want a difference and make fast decisions; cyborg-style is the way to go, changing the external pheriparals for how we work doesn't change much else but ergonomics.
but if your multitasking skills would be inferior one could always put it on voice-syntesis activated by voice-command instead. would leave your arms/eyes free for other tasks and helpful for the physically challenged people.

I'm going to have to save to upgrade my machine to a tv, car and many tablets and cell phones that can talk with each other flawlessly. (something apple can do with its os's and macs)
thats like the most gigantic tablet pc in the world (like half way in the clip). If that will be the standard for comfortable computer use.. the price of tablet pc's will have to go down dramaticaly because the biggest wacom tablet with screen is 21" (cintiq) so thats like not even close to the size of the tablet in the clip. An then the price: the cintiq will cost you 2840 euros without taxes! So can you imagine how much the one in the clip would cost...
Even though this is only a concept video it would take a lot of software and hardware for all of the things show. The operating system itself would cost even more than vista.
Well as the video shows, Win7 looks like it can be integrated and used on multiple devices. From mobile phone, TV, car, computer, etc. And it showed how easy it is for multiple users to have access to data on the fly. Very neat if you ask me.

I'll be more impressed than I would be by a stupid warp effect they accomplished in 2010 when they get Aero's blurring to work when minimizing windows or using flip 3D (which was an unintentionally useless waste of effort).

strangly enough it is. Windows 7 was orinally ment to be just for home tasks like telling a computer to turn on the heating, downloading resipies and displaying it on a kitchen counter ect. But I never have thought it could do stuff with the phone and the car and work.

Actually, what you see there is M$ trying to make Windows even more "n00bs-friendly" (like Apple). N0obs-friendly + windows = "n00bs unable to keep a comip secure" which means there will be more annoying security. It will become even more bloated of security and it may even become so "secure" than any tweaking you can easily do now in XP and Vista may become almost impossible unless you're a very advanced user.

Apple has seen stuff like this - and they are now working on getting voice recognition in to the next versions of OS X. The only reason they manage to get a step a head is because MS releases their ideas way too far ahead, and since MS is so big, ideas get leaked. Apple, on the other hand keeps everything very hush hush...

Apple already had voice recognition in MacOS in the 90s, and they included it in MacOS X. It was a good first step back when it was first introduced, and it's fun to play with, but it's been standing still for a while now.

The car updating you on notifications is rather stupid though, that's what I have my cellphone for. we all know we will just plug stuff into the neck anyway like in GITS in the future.
This is all jsut fancy schmancy eyecandy, if you really want a difference and make fast decisions; cyborg-style is the way to go, changing the external pheriparals for how we work doesn't change much else but ergonomics.

thats like the most gigantic tablet pc in the world (like half way in the clip). If that will be the standard for comfortable computer use.. the price of tablet pc's will have to go down dramaticaly because the biggest wacom tablet with screen is 21" (cintiq) so thats like not even close to the size of the tablet in the clip. An then the price: the cintiq will cost you 2840 euros without taxes! So can you imagine how much the one in the clip would cost...

Well as the video shows, Win7 looks like it can be integrated and used on multiple devices. From mobile phone, TV, car, computer, etc. And it showed how easy it is for multiple users to have access to data on the fly. Very neat if you ask me.
