Wow! What a magical day that must have been for all who shared it. Lived on the Big Island for seven years and miss scenes like that. It is truly beautiful year round, but does have it's social problems with a very vocal lower class who have a sense of entitlement mentality.
This is so heart-grabbingly beautiful. I haven't been to Hawaii in years and it has made my day to see this amazing slice of life you captured. Thanks for sharing!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAWWEEEEESSSOOOOOME! We live in NZ and have followed whales in toga, raro and NZ, this is truly amazing!!! You guys are as lucky as!!! Kee livin' the dream-kia ora!!!
This is why I am moving back to Big Island!!! Man I miss it. Awesome video. I used to see whales that close over at Honolii, a truly amazing experience!!
That may honestly have been one of the coolest videos I've seen in recent memory..besides of course the "Afro Ninja" video. I'm moving to Kona in September to do all those cliche-ish things like fish, snorkel, hula, eat papaya, and surf and whale watch AT THE SAME TIME! If you dared someone to imagine that without having seen this video their heads would explode! And one more thing..is this one of those surf spots where the locals beat you up if you try to surf there? Where is this spot?
This has got to be the coolest video I've seen! What a day that had to have been! Doing something you love and have whales in the background as your surfing cheerleaders! Totally cool!!
Loved Loved Loved the video I live in Scotland but have been to Kona many times and it was fantastic to see such a wonderful view of the guys surfing with the Whales in the background, well done !!! x
(cont3) If you notice there was a third whale to the far left. Possibly the female OR another male waiting to challenge the winner. Nicely done and you are extremely fortunate to have caught all that on video so close to shore!I live in Puerto, Vallarta now and have been studying whales since I was a little girl. Our whales come here to do the same thing.
(cont.2)They actually will not eat the entire time they are there. Although they breach for all sorts of reasons: aggression, warning, calling others from miles away, showing off for females or simply playing, these whales were also accompanying the breaching with tail and pectoral slapping which are both aggressive and/or warning signals to others.
Hey, I don't know if anyone has posted anything about the behavior you got to witness. THought you would be interested to know. Most likely you captured 2 males being aggressive with one another. Probably fighting over a female. Yes. . . .that kind of behavior is species universal. (hahaha) Humpbacks go to Hawaii to mate and give birth.
My family and I are moving to the Big Island next week. My husband is an avid surfer and our 7-year old daughter loves the ocean and wants to be a vet. Thanks for the awesome footage, I'll share it with them!

my wish was to fly one day over Mount Everest with my kids - but after I saw your video, there is nothing else more I would like to show to my kids, as whales.
maybe you didnt get my note. Awsome whale footage. But you didnt need to expose locations to sacred spots. Your obviously one of those who hav zero respect for the locals and the island. KOOK!
Not sure when shark season is but you will be here at the height of whale season. I'm not sure how big you are but mako sharks are really big and mean. I wouldn't suggest wresling with a mako.
That video was soooo incredible!!! I was just at Kehena Beach & thrilled to see one little tail and to hear lots of wails...no pun intended. What part of Big Island was this filmed? Awsome!

Amazing~ Those whales will not lose to the surfer-boys ^^ :)
moujinboo 3 years ago
whales will straight show off for my grady white when we're out fishing.
as long as you stay at least a hundred yards away or so you generally have little to worry about.
of course, when you;re talking about an animal that's three times the weight of your 27' foot boat, you just never know.
whales are smart as hell
they certainly do realize the shared enjoyment of both parties (the whales and people)
