  • beast!

  • sexy ass drum set

  • hey man whats ride are you using, the bell sounds amazing

  • @steven123158 In this video, I'm using a Sabian 21" Raw Bell Dry Ride. But now I'm endorsed by Soultone Cymbals! You should definitely check them out. They sound just as good as the big 4 brands, but they're still a new company.

  • Nice

  • got this writen up anywhere?

  • i can do it just as fast but i cant hit the hi-hat the second time tho but it still sounds good

  • Not many ppl could brake that down

  • mean bro awsum

  • oops didnt mean for the double post

  • this is in fact writen in 16th note triplets r(together with kick)

    r l r l r l kk rl kk lr lrl kk lrlrkk crash

  • Need add some room reverb....

  • @kargyraa1 Yeah it wasn't recorded with any mics or anything. It's just in a basement.

  • but the ghost note on snare drum??? :)

  • @piscopoDrum Aw now everyone's joining in! haha!

  • @drumguyrobc oooh yeah :)

  • Nah y'all he watch Aaron spears play it and show his first fills

  • thats sick man!:D

  • thanks alot dude!

  • nice fills man!!

  • Are those almost like john bonham triplets?

  • @yoyotony28 Not exactly, but under the same principle. John Bonham triplets involved playing notes on your hands for the first and second partials, and a kick on the third. The principle here is the same. If you really get into the groove playing fills like this, it really sounds like a conversation between your hands and foot!

  • awesome, subscribed

  • Awesome! subscribed

  • NICE!!!

  • Nice vid, lick was well broken down!

  • can you post a score or something to read for this fill its just such a ledgendary one ?

  • Nice

  • Dude.... I have been playing drums for 23 years.... As you know this lick is pretty awesome and something that is hard to transcribe. Whether or not there is cross sticking or not, you nailed this and it sounds great! Never mind the jealous haters who cant produce something that even sounds close to this. You and I both know that youre a better drummer than probably everyone you been in a room with and more than half the youtube posters out there. Great work! Props! Keep it up!

  • very good!

    u have the skills man!!

  • Great vid! How did you edit the slow versions?? What program? Pc / mac?

  • I have a Mac and was using iMovie, but lately I've been using Final Cut Express a lot.

  • @drumguyrobc do u have to pay for that program?

  • nice man

  • ! man thats a beautiful lick! awesome consistency, dont care how aaron does it, you make it sing =) big props

  • your shoulders should be more relaxed

  • Thanks for the tip...I'll log that one away.

  • Bro how do i get better at just playin, its like i want to do this stuff but i feel like i can't

  • Drumming is definitely a "practice makes perfect" kind of thing. While there are prodigies out there that it comes natural to, I was definitely not one!

I know it sounds lame, but I suggest practicing your rudiments a ton (start slow and build speed). A solid foundation in rudimental drumming is what makes the greats great. Next, start with simple grooves and practice them with a metronome, and play along to your favorite artists' music. Start with the easy stuff first, then the hard stuff!

  • Wow a bit touchy there drumguyrobc.

For starters he doesn't do the cross sticking at the end.

No need to be all insulted just cos you posted an incorrect version.

I mean what do you expect???

  • Not touchy. Merely asking you to post the correct version.

  • nice man. TRIPPLETS haha

  • This is actually incorrect. Aaron plays it slightly differently. Here is another (actually incorrect) transcription by Terry Branam - he misses the last cymbal with the last snare but the rest of it is perfect.

Go to drummerworld and click on Aaron Spears it's one of the videos titled "slow motion".

    For transcript see below video.

    Keep it up

  • I probably get about 10 messages a day of people telling me I'm doing it wrong. Every one of them says something different. I really don't want to sound arrogant, but if I'm doing it wrong, then post a video yourself.

  • could you maybe explain a little slower please thanks

  • so this is mostly rlrlkk, right?

  • best cover of the lick iv found on youtube

  • One of the best replications of that lick I've heard!

  • amazing!!

    is this a triplet ?

    or 8th ?

  • It's mostly sextuplets.

  • thx, i'll try to study that a little!!

  • yes true has worked before.. but even chris dave said in modern drummer thats only good to a certain extent.. i myself love to watch drummers of many styles from chris dave, aaron s. to george kollias to buddy rich to heracio hernandez to marvin mcquitty!! then i take all that and put it in my own words but without actually breaking it down!!!!!??

  • why not just make up your own licks!! that way u come out as an individual on the kit!!!! its cool to watch and then go to drawing board but to break it all down why!!! practice your singles doubles hands and feet get them fast and then put your own stuff together!!

  • This was for people who wanted to learn this lick after seeing the DVD. Though everyone has room for improvement, my personal licks are just fine.

  • I may have read your message wrong. If you want me to explain some technique on here, I'd be more than happy to! I'm a teacher, so that's what I'm doing most of the time.

  • @ediot6969: Masters of all instruments have always developed their unique styles by imitating their predecessors, stealing all of their licks, then combining them in new ways and thus creating their own personal vocabulary. Learning lots of different licks and messing around with them is the best way (and some might say the only way...) to come up with something truly unique.

  • Well said and thank you!

  • man this is just what ive been looking for. and you learned this with a practice pad kit. forget about what the haters say. youve got great skill there. wish i could play as well as you could. anywho gonna spend some time learning this, thanks again!

    best regards.

  • No problem, and thanks for the feedback! People like you are the reason I decided to put this up. I'm a drum instructor, so I feel like every time I learn something new, I feel like it's my duty to teach it!

If you want to learn it properly, as many have pointed out, there's two left-handed ghost notes missing that you'll want to throw in. This fill is a blast! Have fun!

  • NEAT!

  • that wuz sik bro...

  • right on man good job! Very well executed. I don't know what people are thinking when they say you need to work on your groove. It's clear to me that you have that down. The bit at the end when you played the fill with the groove was VERY tight. Props!

  • cheers m8!

thnx for the vid very helpful

    u're good by the way

    fuck those groove critique,

If your sound recording was better your groove would sound 10 times better, It is clear that you have it mate !

  • You know what, groove is far more vital than a blinding fill, get that right before bringing out the party piece, nice though!

  • My groove is just fine. Thanks though.

  • Okay, definitely not trying to be a jerk here, but I get it guys...I missed two ghostnotes before the splash (which to be 100% correct should actually be a china). I learned this off a friend's DVD, on a practice pad kit, then went home and made the video.

I don't plan to redo it to add two notes. Please go post your own video of this, but be prepared to be critiqued by every man, woman, and child that plays drums and tells you how much better Joey Jordison is than you.

    I feel better!

  • Dont even matter,im still trying to get it...LOL

  • good for you man. joey sucks. great drummer but he sucks. @_@ nahmsayin? lol

  • Comment removed

  • sticking please in the instrument format. Ex ) Snare, 1 tom, 2 tom, snare, hi hat, kick, 3 tom

  • sticking please

  • guys if u notice , the entire thing is a triple paradiddle. RLRLRLRR LRLRLRLL

  • good post man, u broke it right down

  • I would have loved to hear the groove played right....but the fill itself was perfect. I actually like the fill he does later on in the track where he sets up the weird synth chord. That one is killin.

  • Yeah I don't know why I didn't play the actual groove. Maybe I'll just track the song one day and put it up.

  • Cool! And post that second fill i was talkin about - would love to see how its played.

  • I wasn't expecting that to be so well done.

    You nailed it, guy.

  • omg u played it sooo wrong...ha just kiddin this was damn perfect!!!!

  • That's some fantastic English you've got there. Good luck in life.

  • dude YES!!! Need some ice for that BURN!!!

  • Alright cool i'll get the pack then:D

    thanks:)

  • Do you have a HHX evolution crash there?

  • Yes, it's an 18 inch! It's probably my most favorite crash I have ever owned. I strongly recommend picking one up if you have the funds!

  • Well thats the thing....i was looking at the evolution ride (which i think is one of the nicest rides) and i found a HHX evolution pack for €600 with the hi-hat, crash and ride. I tried the ride and hi-hat but couldnt really try out the crash so i was wondering should i buy the pack?

  • I am in love with the Evolution line, they're so musical! If you like the ride and hats, you should love the crash. I would say that's a pretty good buy!

  • Thank you everyone for over 20,000 views!!! Please help me keep spreading the word. I'll have more videos up very soon!

  • Thank you dude !!

Now i can understand the lick !!

    Cheers form Brazil !!

  • Did u learn it by Ear. how did u do it

  • Man u are good! i gotta give props too you!

  • what kind of set are you playin?props by the way

  • Tama Starclassic. All birch. 8x10, 9x12, 11x14, 13x16 toms; 18x22 bass. I have quite a few different snares but in this video I'm using a 7x14 Starclassic G-Maple. All Sabian cymbals.

  • very close, the feel is the same! But your fill is a lil different, ya know what i mean? :) props.

  • w00t souding good sir

can you do some improved linear licks nextime...cuz Aaron of course came with that chop from the top of his head during th MD06 performance :)

  • Absolutely! Linear licks are my favorite to play!

  • Hey Where is the ghost notes ¡¡¡¡¡¡

This fill is incomplete Dude > >

    KK L R LL

  • They're in there the last time I play it.

  • I think its great and thanks a ton for sharing :]! Rock on!

  • man! post the transcription!!! :D :D

  • any chance i could the sticking for this? would be great thanks :)

    amazing lick love aaron

    great job man

  • what he did was actually not really correct... its he actually opened his hi-hat, closed it with the left foot then kick. so let X be close of hihat... and Ly be the open hihat with left hand... RLRLRLyXKLRll RLRLRLyXKLRLRLKK flam K u get what i mean? if not juz go with RLRLRLKKLRll RLRLRLKKLRLRLKK flam K. trust me, i hav slowed down the video and studied it...

  • Sorry man, not trying to be arrogant but that's exactly what it is. I have seen the slow motion video but that's not how I learned it, I have an actual transcription from him. There is also no flam...it is a linear fill.

  • yeah there isnt any flam... but still u r playing it wrong...

  • Sure man, whatever you say. Where's your drum videos?

  • lol

  • dude, do you seriously have the transcription of this?

  • lmao

  • Even if it's not exactly the same, it sounds awesome.

  • i just started drummin so 4give me 4 askin dis question wat does the II stand for???

  • It's your hands...

    Kick Left Right Left Left

  • awesome dude your toms are mad!

  • Yeah, sorry. I don't mean to sound cocky, but that's exactly how the fill is played.

  • not really right...after u hit the hi-hat then the double on the bass drum, then the snare on the two times, aaron spears did it with two ghost-notes with the left hand.. so the stickings is actually RLRLRLKKLRll RLRLRLKKLRLRLKK - flam on snare - K u get what i mean?

  • nice man...sounds good

  • ur toms sound really nice

  • thanks again. i learn a lot

  • thank you so much!

  • how do you like your tama starclassssssssic :]

    nice job btw

  • Thanks for the compliment!

I love my Starclassic! I've had it about five years now. I'm looking into a bubinga kit right now, but my birch will stay with me forever!

  • Nice!

  • hey man, could i ask what kit that is please

  • I've gotten a couple of these so I'll post the specs.

    Tama Starclassic Performer (Birch):

    8x10

    9x12

    11x14

    13x16 toms

    18x22 kick

I have a variety of snares but most often use a 7x14 Starclassic G-Maple or 6.5x14 Orange County X (maple) as my main snare.

Cymbals vary, but are all Sabian.

  • sounds amazing man, to pricey for me though

  • Actually it was really pricy when I first bought it about five and a half years ago. Guitar Center has that kit without the 13x16 for $899 right now! That's extremely cheap for that kit!

  • wow, thats awesome

    im gealous man

  • damn, nice job aaron does hit em hard and fast lol

    so shiny

  • you're too fucking good at this man.

  • fuck that i cant do that shit lol

  • Good Break down Man! I bet you can Beast the set.

    Keep on Kickin' Brotha!!
