As far as I know, Prime was a dock worker on Cybertron named Orion Pax. Pax idolized the rebellious Megatron, found out he was a jerk and Megs blasted him. An old bot named Alpha Trion rebuilt him into Optimus Prime.

The band was actually White Lion, but they were credited as Lion, that soundtrack is fantastic, pure 80's rock/glam-metal. The Movie also is the first one to introduce Unicron and the animation was way better than that of the series.
