I'll never forget this film. It seemed at first that this family would be immune from persecution. But I always felt that, although they seemd protected by the walls of their compund, that Micole knew, eventually, that they would all be doomed. It was good at the end that they showed not only where the Bassanis lived, but also the Estate where Micole lived, and that despite the fact it was the Summer following their deporation, they showed the garden and the tennis court barren and deserted.
I come back to this film again and again. It is de Sica's last, and it is such a masterpiece. The purity of concept is wonderful--this world of civilized and decent people surrounded by savages who have gained the upper hand--the very people that civilization was constructed to keep in their holes. God bless the Jewish people and keep them safe from now until the end of time!

There is their version of racism thet same as that which exists in the US or in Italy (extra communitari&north vs south), or France (Roma) or Russia (Africans). Ho avuto modo di ascolare questo canto nella PINKAS Sinagoga a Praga. Sulle pareti migliaia di nomi dei morti di Terezinstadt. La maggior parte bambini. El Mahle Rahmim ti esplode dentro, doloroso ed infinito. Non riusciremo mai a comprendere quanto dolore è stato sopportato, quanta pena e sofferenza causata a persone innocenti.
