  • i really recommend kayaks because they're soooo much easier to use. It's just my own opinion.

  • love the hair dew!

  • peter, i see you just left, im actually on leave in fulton illinois (the town with the dutch windmill along the river) i will be there until july 30th visiting my family and friends, if you stop by there let me know and i will show you some unique dutch heritage places

  • looks like a cool trip pete... clipper canoes are from canada you know, abbotsford, which is right near the border of canada/usa... you know what else they produce there? just kidding around... i know clippers well, they are great. you'll do well. looking forward to the actually vids. gozar!

  • Used to live near miss river in Missouri. It is a very dangerous river. Most people I knew wouldnt dare go into it. Good luck.

  • I know this is too little to late, but I have quite a bit of canoe-trip experience, and I would recommend a long-sleeve shirt over sunscreen. You don't have to worry about a light poly shirt washing off, or re-applying it every hour or so, not to mention it is easy put on or take off by comparison. Also you might want to look into some waterproof/ warm gloves. I went on a trip once that almost gave frostbite in the middle of summer, and that was NOT a fun experience

  • Personal Floatation Devices. lol.

  • Make sure you have a water proof casing for your camera. It'll definitely get pretty wet and you really don't want to break your camera or damage your footage from the water. And be safe!

  • You probably know this, but be very careful on the Mississippi R. I lived in Kansas City for ten years of my life and there was never a time that that river was NOT full of branches, snags, whirlpools, etc. It's dirty and treacherous, so make sure that you have something to patch up your canoe and yourself if things go awry!

Good luck, though, I look forward to seeing the videos and all the people you encounter! You're an inspiration for travel...

  • this is cool, im going kayaking there too

  • im about 20 minutes away from Champlin MN. keep us posted on when your coming through and maybe i can recommend some food places.

  • I don't know much about Mississippy River, but I have done some canoeing in my life so I would recommend to use water proof everything (water proof bags!!!), get really light oars (they can get heavy towards the end of the day) with paddles on both ends, always have a sponge or some cloth in the canoe to get rid of excess water, if the river is rocky or has a lot of low parts, I uggest to take some sort of fixing gear with, in case you scrape a whole in the canoe and stock up on nuts!

    Good luck!

  • So are you going to stop every night beside the river and camp out?

  • I think you should take an hour to review the different canoeing strokes, it will really come across as handy once you're actually doing the series. Going down a river can be extremely easy if you know how to maneuver efficiently. An efficient stroke is one where the entire flat part of the paddle is in the water. Alternating sides is not necessary if you're using the right strokes too. It's also easy to cross a river against strong current using the right technique! Have fun, I will follow you!

  • Read "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain.

  • A bit of practice navigating big wakes from barges and tugs and various other large ship wakes as Old Man River is full of them. Their wakes close in can be surf city. Maybe a canoe with an outrigger would be a good improv. Good adventure!

  • I love going up to Big Bear, very nice there, fresh air, lots of nature. Only an hour from me and the ppl are friendly there. Dang, I want to go back now.

  • I'm jealous. sounds like a great time. I highly recommend going to the race. fit2paddle. com site. This guy does LOTS of long distance paddling (including Missouri River Race 340 miles) and racing. Lots of tips for gear, grub, etc.

  • I'm not sure about anymore, but that lake used to be a feces-infested, staff-ridden, cesspool.

  • was the water super cold?

  • Comment removed

  • I love watching your videos are there any cool hiking trails you know of in the san diego area?

  • *SUBSCRIBED :)

  • Yay the Mississippi! That's going to be fun ... to watch lol!

  • I would probably wear some sort of gloves (maby biking gloves that doesnt cover the fingers) or thin ones cuz you will probably get some nasty blisters if you´re paddeling that much!

  • Pdrop - There are a few lakes that you may want to be aware of. Lake Pepin in MN is big, wide, and slower moving water. On a windy day you will see waves bigger than your Big Bear experience. I also saw the dams mentioned, but you should be aware that there are a $hitload along MN/WI alone. If you need a MN connection, let me know...

  • that plant behind you looks very marijuana-ish

  • How do you make the money for traveling? I feel like youtube would be insufficient

  • What are you going to do about the dams all along the mississippi?

  • PhillyD brought me here last month, and I love it! Awesome background music too

  • 0:47 lmao random dude with a fish

  • Big Bear is so sick......Cali ftw!!

  • Is there a reason that you picked canoes over kayaks? Size probably. I've always preferred kayaks, but they don't have as much cargo space. But they are also harder to tip over. Hmm...

  • @swfan91 We chose Canoes because there'll be a few of us going and we need to store all our equipment including all the video stuff.

  • ow ow, good practice!

  • Cool

  • I'm here in the New Orleans area, the river is running fast. you need to practice your steering tech. Also watch out for logs, they can float just under the water and can be big as trucks.

  • @mawacal Thank you. Yeah, I need help with my stroke. Also, heard about the speed of the river. Sounds exciting and frightful at the same time.

  • keep your center of gravity lower. less tip overs. get a canoe with a lower seat or Neel down on your knees while leaning against the seat

  • @smashingpachi sounds good, will do!

  • I love your videos, so good!

  • Congratulations and Good luck Peter. Can't wait to watch it.

  • You should have your own show on the Travel Channel!

  • minute ads ? what is this

  • @coby242424 I think those ads can be skipped over.

  • Yes yes yes :)

  • I like the fact that your always money conscious, it brings a sense of reality to your travels. Subbed and good luck

  • Exciteeeeeeeeeed :D

  • Hey I'm originally from California and now live in Mississippi. Make sure to bring bug spray, sunscreen, lots of water, and light clothes like shorts and t-shirts. The humidity here is a beast.

  • You know your arms are going to be BEAST by the end of this trip hahaha

  • @soundlyawake BEASTLY arms is the only reason i'm doing it for. The gym's got nothing for me.

  • I would recommend that you learn how to stern properly. It'll really help.

  • 1 person doesnt like adventures =o looking forward to ur adventure Peter ;)

  • woohoo you're coming to my hometown St. Louis! (: Can't wait to see you pass the arch; good luck!

  • that was awesome, keep em coming....biiiggggg fisshhhh

  • Hey Peter, Don't rule out a kayak - their center of gravity is much lower and they are therefore more stable. You can get one or two person boats. Google "Folbot:" for their website. My family and I made one when I was 12 years old - used it for almost 20 years on lakes and rivers in SC and Nebr.

  • Hey where do you buy your clothes man? nice style.

  • @MrBoludo9 Thank you. A lot of the stuff that I wear is from H&M or thrift stores.....very affordable, check it out!

  • This is such an amazing idea! You're a very likeable man too, good at speaking to an audience. Hope the trip works out well! Best of luck to you!

  • take a fishing pole so you can have some suchi , get the glasses that take the glare out of the water and take a lot of beef jerky for that long trip also one more thing take a water filter pump so you can have fresh drinking water : ) goodluck on your trip Peter i like that idea for this trip

  • I used to live in big bear :)

  • good luck on the river. hope you learned how to portage and rescue yourself from a swamped canoe. remember the "J-stroke"! it will save your arms. teeth to the wind.

  • Some of the tags he put for this video are hillarious

  • I can't wait to see the trip! I've always loved traveling and wanted to backpack or something through somewhere. You make it all seem so much fun!

  • You are such a well-rounded, adventurous man... and such an inspiration!!

Wish you the best on and along your canoeing adventure!!

  • If u guys need a place to crash in Minneapolis you are welcome at my house!

  • STAYING BALANCED IS SO HARD. my brother and i were kayaking in lake michigan and hit each other. i tipped over into 50 degree water in mid july. it was great.

  • Locks and dams around illinois and iowa...just sayin'....lots of dams.......damn

  • 1. Gorgeous runs in your family ;)

    2. I'm so excited about the new adventure.

    3. I love how friendly you are and how you seem to truly enjoy meeting people... you're one of those rare people who has never met a stranger I think. You're an inspiration to so many and I'm thankful the Lord saw fit to create souls such as yours. Good luck on your new journey, I'll be sure to stay tuned!

  • @MakeUpSleuth84 Wow! Such kind words. I really appreciate the amazing comment, thank you!

  • I live on the Mississippi, or really close to it.

  • i would recommend getting some cycling gloves (fingerless, padded in the palm and bottom part of the fingers) to prevent blistering. they are a life saver for me when i go on kayaking adventures. i hope you're planning to bring along some kind of patch kit and a water bailer in case you spring a leak! good luck! looking forward to these videos :)

  • Glad you made it out of Big Bear ALIVE!! You should definitely get some GoPro's for your trip. So amped!!

  • @ShotScience Thanks a lot Casey! I have the go pro on the list. Scared of spending this money, eventhough that's the job. how's it going for you? Buy any cool stuff?

  • Im so stoaked for the next trip, can't wait!

  • That would be pretty sick if you went by my moms house on the mississippi in brainerd.

  • @InvaderMilo Just took a look at Brainerd on the map. Aside from it being a dot, it looks nice :)

  • @pdrop yeah its a pretty small town. there is a great little lake on the river that has really clear blue water I think its called rabbit lake or something.

  • if you're worried about tipping in waves, then paddle on ur knees in rough water. it'll lower your centre of gravity. anyways, good luck man

  • can't wait to watch you on your next journey. Happy trails Peter!!!

  • @mariannetolstoy Thanks Marianne! Keep it real. OK!

  • Personnel floatation devices? Or.. Life Jackets?

  • when will you guys going threw minneapolis/st.paul

  • @okstrats Not 100% sure how long it will take us to get there. I'm thinking around late July we'll be going through.

  • I live on the Mississippi so you should give us a heads up when and where you are gonna be on certain days... also how do you plan to get past the dam in Keokuk Iowa?

  • @sexybeast0012 I figure we'll Portage the damn. I'll post update vids, or you can follow our progress on twitter if you're curious.

  • @pdrop I honestly had to look up what portage is haha but that would work... also it's dam not damn come'on pdrop ;)

  • @sexybeast0012 haha, someone commented earlier and said damn dams. So it must've slipped into my head. By the 20th dam, i'll be calling them DAMNS!

  • Good luck and stay safe! I'm so excited to see this trip.

  • Fun

  • yay for more new vids =)

  • Do you have a GoPro? If not you should get one for the trip, just in case you ruin your camera xD

  • Woop cnt wait

  • Good luck! :D

  • live in STL!

  • You should probably invest in a waterproof camera since the chances of you flipping the boat are very high.

  • @mikemurphy383 absolutely! looking into it as we speak.

  • i'm from st. louis, right of the mississippi, home of the st. louis cardinals and the arch. you HAVE to go up the arch, which is right off the river, try imo's pizza and toasted ravioli, and maybe even explore the old courthouse where the famous dred scott case took place

  • @jesandmich If we have a safe place to leave our canoes, I'm all for exploring St.Louis!

  • Looking forward to seeing videos of the trip!

  • I live 15 minutes from the Mississippi river! It runs through Stillwater MN :D

  • get an ultra wide angle lens or a go pro and strap it to the front of the canoe and make a timelapse!

  • @kiwisause Most definitely looking into the gopro, as well as a wide angle.

  • Hi where is that place at 0.11 ?the building look amazing...

  • @defyzai that's the flatiron building in new york city. google it!

  • Get a comfy life jacket as you will not want to have any motivation to take it off, marine radio, and SPOT GPS Tracker (You'll beable to have InTransit viewers able to follow your progress) I know you like to do things on a budget but just some friendly suggest from a guy that does alot of traveling in kayak's

  • I love everything about u and ur trips. I cannot wait to see your vids of this trip in my subscription box! Be safe and enjoy every place that your heart takes u! <3 from NC.

  • I'm so exited to watch more of this, good Luck !!

  • Aww that sounds so cool man!! Hope your cam is waterproof

  • You are going to die, I'll stay tuned just to see that. You are not even prepared for the barge traffic let alone this season the river is overflowing it's banks due to heavy snow melt and high rainfall this spring.

  • @MeetMeIncognito As long as you stay tuned. Thanks for the support

  • @Pdrop sweet i didnt think you would reply but i look forward to this trip and stay out of thunderstorms that river can be a wild motherf hope it goes well

  • This is gonna give me the chills! AND I'M NOT EVEN THE PERSON THAT IS DOING THIS TRIP LOL

  • yay:) this sounds amazing! make sure to bring bug spray. mosquitoes are nasty this year, or at least where i am. let us know where to meet up with you, i'll make a huge sign for you and hang it on a bridge where i live:) oh, and where are you guys going to be crashing? there are a lot of good campgrounds around the area. you should camp out!

  • i live by lake itasca. can i get your autograph?

  • @Doin3sOff40s sure! we might throw a little send off meet up before we go.

  • Hey Peter! I'm watching your series since the beginning of your trip to the Panama canal. I'm really happy to see your community grow and it's amazing how 100% percent of your viewers like the content. Very few youtubers could say the same about their channel.

    Keep up the good work,

    Love from Bulgaria

  • AWW Big bear! I've like stood where you're standing I feel awesome xD hahah My brother and I rented a normal boat, not a conoe though..

  • I am so vacationing vicariously via you. BTW, have you tried the DC transit system? Now we have the largest Bike Share program in the country and it is ridiculously awesome.

  • @GIOtheZIPPERHEAD yeah, actually very pricey. I think it was $20/ hour.

  • You will need a waterproof camera, like a GoPro. Good Luck!

  • I live in WI but not by the river. You should do a meetup in LaCrosse or Dubuque.

  • @DunkRyan sounds like a good idea, I'll let you know through some vid updates when and where we are.

  • @rynet91 that sounds amazing. done and done

  • I live in NE and I'm only 30 minutes away or so from the Missouri River and you might want to do some research on any flooding going on in the Mississippi River right now. The Missouri R is backed up in Joplin MS and up in Sioux City IA, coming down to Omaha NE. I think the Miss R looks wider on maps, but just to be safe. Would hate for you to get all the way over there and towns are evacuated on you for lodging / food needs.

  • @dwermes Absolutely! Thanks for the heads up. We contacted the Army Corps of Engineers and they said the river is pretty quick and old maps don't even make sense because the flooding has changed the boundaries. Should be interesting!

  • U should get yourself a GoPro HD for filming while you are canooing. They are waterproof, and they aren't that affected by the wind. Have a nice trip

  • @olgolgo It's on the list! thank you.

  • First time watching your travels, so happy PhillyD showed me your channel, fucking excited.

  • @LukeM1808 Phil Nation rules! ! ! !

  • i did that in the bay, and a sea lion popped up from the water.

  • @BerkeleyBuilt Holy crap, that's great

  • You are the man!

  • Oh, awesome! Big Bear Lake is beautiful.

  • Ok so for the Mississippi River you need a map of it because the river itself separates a lot. And I would be really careful when you go through Minneapolis and St. Paul because the river gets really busy.

  • @xxnoiseandkissesxx16 Next video will cover maps, lightly.

  • i love canoeing so much haha

  • also! when you paddle move with your whole body with the stroke so your arms don't get as tired and you go a bit faster. and if there are rapids get on your knees in the boat to prevent tipping and if you see a thing in the water that looks like a V don't go over it cause theres a rock there but if there's an opening like looks like ^ and upside down thats ok

  • @lianasamo Really good tips condensed in a paragraph, can't forget now. thanks!

  • couple tips...watch out for sunburn on the top of your legs...been there

a longer canoe is more stable

learn how to portage your canoe properly...that means carrying the canoe on your shoulders upside down

in windy conditions the canoe bow acts like a sail...put rocks up front to keep the bow in the water

also you can kneel down on a cushion on the floor of the canoe and paddle.. more stable this way

practice in calm water...and good luck

  • @capeguy Thinking of portaging by carrying, but might end up getting the apparatus with the wheels to pull them. I really like the rocks idea, probably gonna use that. If I do, I'm giving you a shoutout! Thanks for the advice.

  • Good luck man

  • ah i am a canoe expert!! haha but really look up the ways to get the water out of the boat if it capsizes (you can either to a t rescue or a capastrami flip) you probably want to research the capastrami flip since you only have one boat i think? and the right way to paddle also, like forward, back stroke, draw, and push away and j stroke. (j stroke is for the stern) just google all this stuff haha GOOD LUCK! canoeing is the best:)

  • @lianasamo Canoeing rules.com! Searching as we speak.

  • 3 great pieces of advice! Can't wait for the next trip!

  • @thebigshoetv haha, dude! This video could've helped that farmers tan you got goin on.

  • This is going to be an awesome trip.

  • you might want to get a waterproof camera....

  • @Nickybchan the waterproof cam is on the list :)

  • Very cool idea for a trip, looking forward to it.

  • Aha can't wait :)

  • your arms are going to be killing you if you don't twist your torso when you paddle. I'm sure you have been looking at some technique books and videos, but I wouls suggest really getting you form down:) Good Luck!!

  • @harrisric128 you're right, arms and back were killing me in the morning. More torso twisting: check!

  • I am not to sure as to the number but you must consider the locks and dams on the river. They create many strong currents near their openings and spillways and have large barge traffic around them. needles to say the Olde Miss might not be to friendly to two adventuresome dudes. Be safe and have fun.

  • @K9LLL Old Man River just does it's thing. Hoping he's on our side and guides us through kindly

  • oh yeah this one will be good but can you top la to panama

  • @siscoismyhomey I dunno, fingers crossed. If not this trip, then the next, or the one after that :) Plan on traveling a lot more then before.

  • fun!!!

  • Can't wait to watch your next adventure. It'll be good.Good Luck & be safe!

  • Don't get hit by a boat :O lol

  • @langstondog1 Best advice ever!

  • @langstondog1 I mean it when I say, "best advice ever"

  • You gotta make these videos longer. Cheers from Romania.

  • i live in Memphis, and it floods big time, and our weather is so unpredictable. so if it starts to sprinkle i would get out because knowing Memphis it will start storming the next hour, then the next hour it will be sunny and pretty.

  • @xplaed0987 Ok, I'll just pull over and hide under a bbq restaurant. Doesn't sound like a bad idea.

  • Make sure to get a couple of core building and stamina building workouts in before the trip. You'll thank me later.Experience : White water rafting

  • you ever seen the film into the wild it awsome you should watch it he kinda does what your doing
