Dorothea is just the most realistic, believable Pamina!! The Queens usually get the accolade due to those 2 arias, yet a poor Pamina characterisation just will reduce the impact of The magic flute. No chance of this happening with DR.She seems to work well both here with N Dessay and with DDamrau.simply brilliant,jk
Sorry but I dont get what all the fuss is about? her voice sounds fine and she is a good singer, but better in this aria then Kathleen battle? or Lucia Popp? or anna moffo? you gotta be kidding me
she is also a really good actress who can enunciate each word clearly... And unlike all the others you mention she is actively singing in our day... Is she better than Popp or Moffo... I don't think that anyone here said anything like that. I prefer Popp to Moffo. But that does not mean that Popp is better. It means that I like her singing more... By the way, I agree with DoryViolet she is wonderful in 2003...
I agree, but I will say she has a lovely interpretation that appeals to me... I won't compare although I agree with you, but she has something special;).
A recommendation to all fans of W.A. Mozarts operas (and no negative judgement on Dorothea Röschmanns great interpretation) : Listen to Elisabeth Grümmer / Grummer singing this aria and wonder!
she should sing like this more often. all she needs is a bit more legato in her singing, especially in her countess and shed really be even more excellent. the tone of the voice and expression need no work at all, they are already beautiful.

i personally feel dawn upshaw's performance of this song is much better. she has much more vocal control and hits the high B flat much softer and quieter than roschmann. it almost sounds like she's screaming to reach that note. i also like upshaw's melismas better than roschmann's
I really don't think dynamic has anything to do it. It's really just about interpretation.
Roschmann's interpretation, in my opinion, emphasizes Pamina's angst. You would be on the verge of screaming and crying if someone you love refuses to speak to you, wouldn't you?
It's also not exactly screaming. Her vocal technique is perfectly intact, minus some legato things, judging from what I hear.
well ultimately its personal preference. i like the sweet, pure and brighter sound of a light lyric soprano, which someone like dawn upshaw is. roschmann's voice sounds like a full lyric soprano, like a renee fleming or kiri te kawana, which is too dark for my taste, so thats why i really dont like how she sings this song.
This really is a personal preference. Some just prefer a Pamina that sings the other -ina's and some like the te Kanawa's in this role. I'm personally on the fence as I like several different interpreters of the role. Such a subjective art. I will agree that Ms. Roschmann is not my favorite here either.
Yes. You can see her when Natalie Dessay sings Der Holle Rache. Look at the performance when she (Dessay) is wearing the blue dress with the heart shaped sparkling collar.
Well, I'm learning the song myself, so I have the translation and am learning to match the German with its English translation. But it would be nice to be able to read the French subs also. :D
She is simply magnificant! Please listen to the new recording of Ein Deutsches Requiem with Sir Simon Rattle. Her singing makes You think of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf.
Perfection, absolutely wonderful! I really really love it. Some of the other Ach, Ich Fuhl's on youtube, are just Awful!!! Thanks for sharing this with us all.

Whenever I'd sing that part staccato I never understod why Mozart had written that there... Why there?
