  • Avatar is like Sarah Silverman, looks pretty but is not original in the slightest.

Plus, is it just me or does Sam Worthington look and play the same part in every film that he is in? Clash of the Titans, Terminator Salvation etc. I also hate movies that force the whole "Mankind are all greedy and evil bastards" plot thread down our throat. I'd give it a matinee.

  • pull that **** to bed room, hey girl here it is (shing) YAAAAAH

  • ehh if youe seen anything on devinatart the world in Avatar is nothing special

  • Matinee.

I went to see this in the theatres when I saw all the praise it was getting. I'll admit, the visuals were nice, but the story is boring, the characters are dull, and it just goes on and on and on and on...And then I walked out during the last 25 minutes or so because I was just fed up with it. To me it was an overbudget 3D short at Disneyland. Yeah, the effects were fantastic, they were revolutionary. But everything else is dull. So, to me, it's just a pretty dull movie.

  • @IISCOOL67

Do you think this is no where near Aliens and Terminator 1 & 2 when it comes to Cameron films?

  • @Johnlindsey289

Terminator 2 is definetely superior to Avatar. Better villain, more original story, more INTRUIGING story, for that matter, more satisfying climax, better characters, just better everything. I mean, Avatar is good to see in 3D, but that's really all I can say about it. The effects are sensational, but effects aren't everything. I don't go and watch a movie to admire the designs, I go watch a movie TO WATCH A MOVIE. Like I said, Avatar seemed like an over-budget 3D show.

  • I agree that Neytiri is one sexy catgirl, she does remind me of the other sexy animated catgirls of my 80s/early 90s boyhood like Cheetara, Cleo on Heathcliff, M'ress on Star Trek TAS, Mirage on Aladdin, Felicia on Darkstalkers, April O'Neil as a catgirl in that Ninja Turtles episode, Kit Mambo on Animalympics, Bucky O'Hare, and even Selina Kyle as an ACTUAL cat-woman in that Batman TAS episode all combined in one.

  • So what if Avatar borrowed from sources like Dune, Star Wars, A Man Called Horse, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (aka Warriors of the Wind), Castle in The Sky, Heavy Metal (Both movie and comic magazine since Cameron is a fan), Princess Mononoke, Gandahar (aka Lightyears), Fantastic Planet and even Call Me Joe but it's still an excellent acievement in filmmaking

  • @Johnlindsey289 Lol.

  • @HeadshotHotHead

Besides Star Wars, seen any of the sources i mentioned?

  • @Johnlindsey289 Most of them.

  • @HeadshotHotHead

Did this movie reminded you of those sources i mentioned?

  • @Fall4Kingdom

Not on par with Aliens and Terminator 1 & 2 when it comes to Cameron films right?

  • i Love how everyone hates the film because of the story.. The story isn't even shit, its one of the fucking best I've ever seen, stop trying to be the center of attention of your friends, just because they are paying more attention to the film than you!

  • @mckevstah1

Nobody complaint about Star Wars and it was a hit.

  • I love the movie and fucking hate the video!!!!

  • pocahontas CGI

  • @Fall4Kingdom i'm comeing to your house to castrate you with a flla knife,

  • I like how when she hits sully in the head his tag wags

  • I loved this movie, regardless of all the critique it has been getting. Maybe I'm not picky enough, maybe others are too picky. No, the basic plotline of this movie is not original but I can say the same for countless of movies. For me it is not just the CG that elevates it, it's how I felt when I watched it. For me personally, it hit all the right notes emotionally. Yes, I got emotional watching this movie. I don't think plot originality makes for a great movie, but how you experience the whole

  • Avatars story may be generic , but look into what runs under it and the research that went into the film and you find a huge amount of work went into presenting the cultural and spiritual conections that are quite real yet running under "a fantasy shell" people relate to the films story because inside we have "heard it before" if you have ever done research on the how indigenous peoples "see" the world you would understand the film does a great job of showing this example

    in a very clever way.

  • @123allrock then they should have just released the behind the scenes rather than the movie.

  • padnal avatar ot 6tiq ekaj

  • i love the animated depictions of the jokes they tell lmao

  • This is just ridiculous... All the hate that this movie gets for having great visuals that allegedly don't make up for its all-too-familiar plot, but the Transformers movies which gleefully don't give a crap about their own stories? We're supposed to brush that off because of THEIR awesome visuals, apparently. ;(

  • @Bobzeaux the transformers films have better stories and come on its transformers for christ sake

  • @JacksToyReviews

The Transformers movies' stories are poorly thought out, nonsensical crap that lack even more originality than Avatar. And "come on its transformers for christ sake" only further contributes to how little sense this mindset makes.

"Why are we supposed to hate this movie, but not this OTHER movie that does the same thing and worse?"

    "BECAUSE!!!!"

  • @Bobzeaux I'm... I'm confused. Your comment's worded very weirdly. Are you saying that people like the Transformers but shit on Avatar?I mean, if you're going by popularity, more people saw Avatar, so more people like that. If you're going by critical reception, still, more critics liked Avatar. So yeah. More people are saying Avatar's the better movie. Unless you're using a different gauge than me, I don't see your point. Stop bitching...

  • @EspioChaos

My comment isn't worded weirdly, it's just illustrating a weird concept. People liking Transformers but shitting on Avatar is EXACTLY what I'm saying. If we're talking about originality, story structure, etc., it makes no sense for someone to criticize Avatar because of a perceived lack of originality, while dismissing similar story-based criticisms aimed at the Transformers movies. And yet it happens CONSTANTLY.

  • @Bobzeaux It's not that the special effects make Transformers great, it's that we know Transformers is nothing more than a dumb, strike that, moronic action film, but there are people who can't tell Avatar is essentially in the same category. Avatar just didn't live up to the hype and more was expected from James Cameron because of his track record so it was a bit of a downer. I think most people understand Transformers sucks, it's about time people realize the same for Avatar.

  • @ATENakaATON

I'm sorry, but a movie having a plot that doesn't offer too many twists is NOT the same thing as a movie that has so little respect for its audience's intelligence that it doesn't even attempt to be consistent with its own nonsense.

  • @Bobzeaux The problem with Avatar's plot isn't a lack of twists, it's the lack of plot, it uses convenient plot devices and shameless stereotypes to force the story along in a predictable manner and the world/setting is an unrealistic impossible fantasy, making Avatar hard to take serious, yet the execution of the tone demands /pigeon-holds it to being serious, which is a poor mix. Transformers is a shallow silly Giant-Robo movie and revels in it, so it can get away with being dumb

  • @ATENakaATON but just so it's understood I didn't actually like Transformers, I don't like style over substance movies with big dumb loud plots, but I wasn't mad at Transformers either because I didn't feel like it was trying to cheat me by convincing me it was something smart/serious when it wasn't Avatar plot wise didn't deliver what it promised by implying it was an intelligent adult epic which left me feeling ripped off, if I had known how cartoony it was I wouldn't have seen it

  • Theme of Colonialism.

It's prevalent and potent but It's also annoying and wrong, and says a lot about Hollywood, corporate America, and the state of the world in 2011.

  • @Fall4Kingdom

I didn't say I did. But you seem to think that your opinion should be highly regarded seeing how you defended it by saying how many thumbs up you got.

  • @Fall4Kingdom

You mean you got 8 other people agreeing with you. Big deal. It only serves as proof that detractors are a minority. Your trite and overly-tired complaints in no way represent a consensus.

  • This movie fucking sucked. It wast just so populer cause it looked pretty

  • @Spartacusi23

    Prove it, loser.

  • @TheBoomViper I don't need to. It's made the most money out of any movies out there, all because it had amazing SG, which i don't care about. Some people may just like the effects, which is fine, but i look for a good story

  • @Spartacusi23

Avatar has a good story. Why else do you think it was critically acclaimed? No movie with only good effects earns such high praise as Avatar did. Care to prove me wrong?

  • @TheBoomViper Guy works with one side, infiltrates the other side, falls in love, doesnt destroy them, then fightss the side he was originally on who turn out to be evil. The end. how many times have you heard that story, coz ive heard it lots

  • @Spartacusi23

Like most detractors you're spreading a tired old logical fallacy that unoriginality will render an entire film as bad by default. Many films retell classic stories, such as The Thing, Lawrence of Arabia, and many others and yet they're considered as masterpieces.

You're doing the stupid thing of focusing on the most superficial element in film-making: plot.

  • @TheBoomViper I'm not saying that no one should like this, i'm just sayin that the better movies are the original ones with original ideas like District 9, very original, and very good. If you like Avatar, then that's fine, I'm not saying you shouldn't

  • @Spartacusi23

District 9 is HARDLY original. In fact, it's very similar to Avatar: evil government vs good aliens (sound familiar?), and one man separates from one side to join the other. If you're going to bring up 'original' films think of a better one. Regardless, originality by itself does not a good movie make. It's execution that matters here (storytelling).

  • @TheBoomViper OK, ive been arguing with you for the last day, and to be honest im getting tired of it. Just look at the two top comments

  • @Spartacusi23

It's interesting to see you simmering down given that you never really presented a good debate, instead you just complained without even properly justifying your complaints. And what about the two top comments? They're marked as spam because someone typed in a web address in their post. Big deal. It's completely unrelated to the issue at hand.

  • @TheBoomViper em no theyr'e not. They both agree with me

  • @Spartacusi23

What the hell are you on about?

  • @TheBoomViper The difference between Avatar ad District 9 is that D9 was done pretty damn well, had very interesting characters (and more realistic), and the whole concept was done so much better. No I'm not hating on Avatar's story, you can have a simple and familiar story and it can still be entertaining if it's told well. Avatar was not.

  • @louielouie11224

But for many people (including film critics) Avatar's story was told well as we can see from the reviews it got, and the overall consensus of the film. Why do you think that is?

  • @TheBoomViper ARE YOU KIDDIN ME ???!!! The plot, superficial ? Honestly, I feel like on the contrary it's the LEAST superficial element. Seriously I know a lot of movies (Avatar, the Transformers movies, most slashers) who could have been far better if they HAD good plots.

  • @Theokal3

The plot is superficial because even with a paper-thin story you can have a great movie, if it's told well, if it captures the audiences' interest and so on. And Avatar did just that.

  • @Fall4Kingdom

LOL Who's the one slagging the story with profane words, and deluding himself that his opinions are fact? You are, you butthurt little teen. Hypocrite.

  • @Fall4Kingdom

    "Nothing more then that."

You can't even spell right, let alone realize that your ignorant opinion isn't fact.

  • full price

  • Wait. wait. wait. The Colonel was the bad guy? Shit man I was routing for him to win the whole time!

  • this movie sucks. In ten tears ore so the cg animation are gonna look dated and with a story this thin

  • woohooo! congrats spill! first vid to reach 1 million views :O

  • better than sex

  • Breakthrough in CG animation? Someone has not seen ANY Pixar film lol

  • I made the mistake of seeing this movie in 3D. I loved the movie itself, but they really should have had an intermission, cause I got really sick in the middle, and actually did throw up afterward.

  • LMAO at the ending!!

  • im a furry not that way

  • Ppl are all like oh it's just pocahontas int's not.

It's really more like the Last Samurai or Atlantis even, but who gives a shit it's a great movie, better than the Titanic shit Cameron took last time.

  • better than sex!

  • Hey, James. Just wondering if you've read Frank (Dune) Herbert's The Jesus Incident? It's set on a planet named Pandora, which is infested by terrible beasties and also has a planet-wide intelligent being called Avata. Just coincidence, right?

  • Batman!

  • Had James used the earlier "Project 880" scriptment for Avatar and changed a few things and split the script in half to make two films, i would have enjoyed it more

  • I HATED THIS MOVIE!!! i fell asleep i was soo bored

  • I'm probably the only person alive who hasn't seen this movie yet and doesn't want to see it =/

  • Congrats on 1 million views Spill! But isn't it funny that Avatar dominates the box office AND becomes Spill's most popular video?

  • Meh. Pocahontas in space.

  • a matinee

  • I love Avatar. It kicks major ass.

  • CG Breakthrough? Some people have never seen Final Fantasy: The Spirits within from freaking 2001.

  • Most overrated movie EVER...it`s OK, NOTHING special...it just the 3D was revolusionary!

  • @CFBLover3 Hey the film wasn't bullshit it was just predictable. If you wanna RANT/TROLL on a video do it on your own so we can thumbs you down personally.

  • It was ite. Visuals were good but story was mehhh

  • Smurfs only taller

Done so many times before I don't see why it was so hyped up.

    Ferngully on steroids.

  • WORST MOVIE EVER MADE! IF YOU LIKE THIS MOVIE FUCK YOU, YOURE STUPID THIS MOVIE IS A FUCK YOU IS THERE ANYTHING WORSE THEN A FUCK YOU BECAUSE IF THERE IS THAT'S WHAT I GIVE THIS ATROCITY OF A "FILM"

  • @CFBLover3 Relax, you'll live longer...

  • This movie was just so overrated to me :P

  • soo... avatars are in borderlands game? (pandora)

  • I find it semi entertaining but barely

  • I found the movie to be rather Anti-Human and total Anti military propaganda, so I give low rental fbecause of the effects.

  • I loved it better than sex :)

  • definitely a Full price from me as well

  • Full Price from all three of them

  • Smyrfs in 3d

  • This movie was a low rental. The special effects were AMAZING, yes, but the story was so boring.

  • YEH - I FOUND THE UNOBTAINIUM

  • Anyone else notice, that in THIS review, they say "Well the story sucks, but the visuals/action makes up for it!" And then they review ANY other movie, example: the Transformer movies, and go the opposite? Kinda hypocritical if you ask me.

As for the rest of this movie... I agree, it was like a disney film. I hated the hell out of this, Now I wonder who's gonna reply and spam me for liking the TF movies. *starts timer*

  • @Jman92854 But they didn't say that. They said that it was a story that they had seen before and so there weren't very many surprises.

  • @FuriousMadonna To be exact, Cyrus said it wasn't "sparkling" to me that means "it sucked" Yes, I know they also said they saw it before.

  • @Jman92854 You're trying to make a point about the spill crew being hypocritical by twisting their words? Your interpretation and what they meant are not the same thing.

  • @FuriousMadonna I'm not twisting their words. I'm saying that even THEY said that the story wasn't great, but the visuals made up for it, while movies like Transformers, they said the opposite. I'm not trying to out "do" them or anything, I'm just pointing that out. Yes, I'm using Transformers as an example, because Dark of the moon wasn't as bad as they made it out to be. And you're thinking that I should've posted this on THAT review, at this point, I'm thinking I should've. xD

  • @Jman92854 No, you said that they said that Avatar's story sucked. Cyrus said that it wasn't perfect or great. They didn't just change their opinion for the Transformers films. They thought that the story, characters, etc. in Transformers were so bad that the visuals couldn't make up for it. They liked the characters, story, etc. in Avatar and gave what were, for them, minor issues a pass because the visuals were so revolutionary. It's fine to disagree, but they weren't hypocritical.

  • I loved the movie, but I know I'm going to be the minority in saying that.

  • I HATE this movie. The effects are great, but it is incredibly boring.

  • Dammit! just reach a million views already!

  • Lol nice man haha

  • I get the joke with the whole them being cat people thing but they DON'T have claws but yes fangs...just saying

  • this guys voice is just hilarious...cat people hybrid

  • i am the only one who dosent like this movie

  • @MegaBlakesmith Not true. I give this movie a rental.

  • "I tell you what, I'm going to that world with a fuzzy thing on a stick". These guys are so gorram funny!

  • See reviews right when they come out! Sign up and make your OWN spill movie page at ------> spill.com

  • @spillcom mines better, see me live this sept 12 2011

  • People are too lazy for their research nowadays. Cameron wrote this movie BEFORE Last Samurai in 1993 as he had the story and idea since 1988, he wrote an 80 page script in 1993 and wanted to film the movie in 97 for a 99 release date after Titanic. But he felt that the technology wasn't ready yet as he shelved it for a decade until the technology does justice to his vision.

  • 5:06 well if you want some of that you better grow a ponytail, XD

  • i don't think i have ever laughed this hard at a movie review show, this needs to have a show on tv

  • the yarn part was one of the funniest things i have ever seen.

  • The yarn bit at the end was so funny it hurt! XD

  • Their nose looks like the one of a boxer with a 100+ years long career....

  • @aquapendulum That's true but there's an old saying (I forget where it's from though )that goes "Any story that is worth telling is worth telling twice"

  • @sadlobster1 Which leads to "Any story that isn't worth telling is best left alone", which is exactly what Pocahontas is. Pocahontas is a lesser Disney film that can't get past their past shadow of the 20th century, it's already bad enough, there's no need to make it worse, which is what Avatar is doing here.

  • These "alien life form" designers-when will they come up with something else ,rather then a salat from all known insect or reptilian species on Earth when they design their "aliens"?

  • the day after christmas we went to indi to watch this 3D.... too bad my aunt had to be a moron and we couldnt find the theatre... we just watched it in normal theatre....

  • @JakeLikesJoking It's called a joke.

  • @FRr3AkOnALEaSh How ironic.

  • @MangaNeoLeo How?

  • @FRr3AkOnALEaSh Because he's called JakeLikesJoking and he can't understand what a joke is.

  • @MangaNeoLeo Ah haha ^.^

  • @FRr3AkOnALEaSh mines better, see me live this sept 12 2011

  • I liked it but not as good as I heard so the hype let it down for me, I give it a rent!

  • @ANTIcoFilms You won't get the full graphical 3D effect you get in theaters. Watching it at home is a clusterfuck compared to the cinema.

  • @FRr3AkOnALEaSh

    fine, what ever

  • "Any furry's gonna see this and start playing pocket pool with himself"

    Not so much >.>

  • " Look kid, im kind of a dog guy. I dont know about you, but FUCK THESE CATS!" LOL

  • @GQ1123ja Actually Zoe Saldana is half Puerto Rican and half Dominican

  • I really really disliked this movie. Very generic story and characters. The visuals are the only redeeming thing about it.

  • You are a moron cryus!

    This is some old bull****.

  • best part at fuck 5:00

  • Sorry, disaggree. Plot was disappointing as hell. Na'vi are paitned as some saints, "YOU MUST LOVE THESE GUYS" while they are the most racist people on planet. Seriosly, I was hoping Na'vi would lose and would have if not sudden Deus Ex Machima.

  • Dances With Wolves+Last Samurai+Pocahontas+SPACE= AVATAR

  • What with the fucking spam?!?!

  • Shut the fuck up with your stupid ass movie sites, No one fucking cares you bunch of motherless fucks.

  • ....and have sex with them... haha

  • I love Spill.com!

  • i'd give it a matinee. the story fell flat. i appreciate how they created this really cool world and were very detailed with the creations but it's still flat. and i mean i've seen this creations in animes so i wasn't so dazzled by them. those floating rocks is so from dragon ball z! but loved steven lang's character andsigourney weaver as always.

  • i'd give it a matinee. the story fell flat. i appreciate how they created this really cool world and were very detailed with the creations but it's still flat. and i mean i've seen this creations in animes so i wasn't so dazzled by them. those floating rocks is so from dragon ball z!

  • @daitanaful

You mean Castle in The Sky.

  • Check out gamerscene (dot) wordpress (dot) com for more movie and video game reviews

  • So much spam

  • Yep... spam has become self aware.

  • You Spill guys suck. Normally you'd focus on the plot and stuff and atleast say it's derivative but you don't even draw that much attention to the fact that Avatar has one of the most unorginal plots of all time. You say the dialogue is terrible, what about the acting? Because aside for Stephen Lang it sucked. The visuals are very overhyped and the 3D was just some floaty things occasionally. The film sucked, I wanted to leave the cinema hall because it was that bad.

  • In my opinion avatar was not good, it was the CGI what made avatar brilliant, but the story was a copy of dances with wolfs

  • i saw this with my ex when we were together i said in the theater "so how do you like dances with wolves so far? or is this titanic?"

  • Who cares that the story and dialogue isn't actually "sparkling"? It doesn't need to be "sparkling". It just needs to be DECENT!

It isn't one of those films you're going to nitpick? Calling it nitpicking is a pretty ballsy move, Cyrus.

What are you? A Moron? No. If we were, we'd be defending the crappy story with "Oh, it's not that kind of movie!" and "It's just a pretty picture!"

  • More like Pocahontas Meets the Smurfs.

  • Great special FX, however awful pretentious story which made me walk out not enjoying it. Some of the worst dialogue in a while too :/

  • Why does cjcool91 comment have 19 votes? What he wrote was completely retarded!

  • @mark33850 "aliens" the sequel to ridley scotts "alien" was made by james cameron

  • @cjcool91 Who's ripping off who? Wasn't Aliens released before the first Halo game? Why are you talking shit about James Cameron if his movie was ripped off by that game? I don't understand! That comment doesn't make any fucking sense!

And why the fuck is it a rip off? The aliens in Aliens aren't religious nut jobs or anything like the aliens in Halo!

  • @mark33850 dude im defending james cameron becasue people say avatar is a ripoff of halo where halo is a rip off of aliens

  • @cjcool91 Oh! Sorry Man! Misunderstanding! Im on your side then!

  • @cjcool91

You know what's interesting is that I think Avatar is kind of the exact opposite of Aliens.

Marines are the good guys = Aliens

Marines are the bad guys (technically mercenaries, but whatever) = Avatar

    Nightmare situations = Aliens

    Dream situations = Avatar

Aliens should be feared = Aliens

Aliens should be loved = Avatar

    etc

It's just a thought. I mean, Sigourney Weaver is in both films. In Aliens, she is the No. 1 character. In Avatar, she's more like Hicks and or Bishop.

  • For all the people excusing Avatar for not being able to come up with new movie ideas, I say FUCK YOU. Go read a book, you morons. Or visit Sundance.

  • The movie looked really good, but that's really all it had going for it. I've seen the plot done a thousand times before and better. If there's any reason I hate this movie it's because it has proved that people will call anything brilliant if it looks good.

  • the movie was ok but i think it could have ben better

  • avatar a.k.a. thundercats vs transformers

  • "sigourney weaver is tough for one scene, then she's all like, 'no, we have to save everything!'" hahaha! That's so true, though. Weaver sucked in this movie. In fact, the story in general sucked. But I still like it because it has amazing effects.

  • I saw the trailer for Avatar when my sister dragged me to one of the Twilight movies (the second?!) and I remember thinking: 'Wow, that's pretty, it's probably gonna suck, but I'm gonna watch it anyway.' When I went to see it, it offered me so much more than just beautiful shots. I love this movie and I have seen it more often than any other movie. So finally, for me personally, something good came out of Twilight :P

  • @271207

At least you got some good memory from suffering through that Twilight junk.

  • This cartoon SUCKED!!!!!

go see district 9 or star trek

  • Yeah thanks I'm gonna go watch District 9 again.
