I keep coming back to this - I can't let go of this final song that Dan shared with all of us. I listened to Souvenirs, Captured Angel, Nether Lands, and Phoenix back to back yesterday, and I was speechless. There's only only reason I can think of for the premature departure of someone with such all-encompassing talent: God loved his voice and music so much, he wanted him there in heaven. But he's still with all of us here too, and I thank him for making such great music.

You guy (and gals) are so sweet and so kind with your words of love for Dan. He was a gift wasn't he? I really feel a kindred love for this guy. I sing his songs, I cried when he died and I miss him more than any other musician that has passed on ever. He really touched my soul more that any other writer and I've been at this for over 50 years now.  I came within a "hairs-breath" of meeting Dan at my music store in Texas.... long story won't bore you with the details..... thanks again Danny

Wow. Movingly scary. I heard about Dan's cancer on the way to Mayo Clinic with my parents. My Dad was diagnosed with cancer. After my Dad's death I started finding feathers. Black ones at his grave and cemetaries, a huge amount of unexplained white ones led the way to my cabin at a retreat. Dan lived years beyond my Dad. When I finally bought this CD, and heard the end, speechless. Your images fit so beautifully with the song. Thank you.

We were in 7th grade talking about this new dude from Peoria (50 miles away) singing 'Part of the Plan' Then I buy 'Souveniers', learn guitar and start playing all his tunes, buy every record up to 'High Country Snows' then get married have 2 kids and suddenly I'm 49, he's gone and I'm listening to him tell us all about his passing. It's almost surreal. RIP Danny see you soon.(and when I do I want answers.)

What if Neil Young could sing this good -- would he be looked at differently as an artist. But then we wouldn't have Down By The River, or Rockin' The Free World in its form, but this makes one wonder.

Good question.  To me, at least, there's a world of difference between being a good singer and a good vocalist. I don't think Neil Young sings anywhere near as well as Dan did, even in his younger days. However, in terms of evoking emotion and painting a picture through words, Neil and Dan are pretty much in the same boat. And make no mistake, a gruff voice like Neil's can still be remarkably effective in the right context.

I miss him terribly for the lack of the music he should still be giving us.

Such a sad and beautiful cover. I can't imagine how Jean must have felt hearing this. I get the feeling that Dan sang this with a tear in his eye and a wink to all of us...despite the lyric, it's not really over, because his legacy and his music will live on long after he has left us. It's hard to listen to this one, but I can't think of a more fitting end to a 37 year career. Rest in peace, Dan. I wish I could have told you in person just how influential your music was to me.

Oh this did it. Released on his birthday, & the lyrics-"it's over..." broke the dam & the tears are flowing. I just miss Dan & his music so much - there are no words to express what his music meant to me since the 1970's when I received HomeFree as a gift & fell in love with this man's beautiful music. A magnificent masterpiece Donna! I went to Plymouth, MA this weekend. Early morning on the harbor, watching the sun, watching it come, and it's going to be a day, there is really no way to say no to the morning, to your beautiful creation, or to Dan's music! Sadness or rejoice, cloudy or sunny, he will always be missed!

This is the first time I've been able to cry over Dan's passing. It's not that I didn't feel the pain and loss, I just wasn't able to cry until now. I think this song and the release of this album really makes it all final...it's over. I don't know how Jean managed the emotional strain of bringing this album to fruition.
