It's so amazing to read these comments, and realize so many people are out there with the exact same thoughts about Dan, that I have. It makes me feel as though I have friends, that I'll never meet, but have known since about 1972.
Just unbelievable...what an extraordinary talent, so pivotal to my appreciation of music as I was "growing up". I've never heard and will never hear anyone like him ever again.
I keep coming back to this - I can't let go of this final song that Dan shared with all of us. I listened to Souvenirs, Captured Angel, Nether Lands, and Phoenix back to back yesterday, and I was speechless. There's only only reason I can think of for the premature departure of someone with such all-encompassing talent: God loved his voice and music so much, he wanted him there in heaven. But he's still with all of us here too, and I thank him for making such great music.
@gva0917 - Dan Fogelberg Memorial Garden dedication, Riverfront Park 28aug2010 Peoria IL. Be there, spread the word, post this message on Dan's videos!
You guy (and gals) are so sweet and so kind with your words of love for Dan. He was a gift wasn't he? I really feel a kindred love for this guy. I sing his songs, I cried when he died and I miss him more than any other musician that has passed on ever. He really touched my soul more that any other writer and I've been at this for over 50 years now. I came within a "hairs-breath" of meeting Dan at my music store in Texas.... long story won't bore you with the details..... thanks again Danny
Wow. Movingly scary. I heard about Dan's cancer on the way to Mayo Clinic with my parents. My Dad was diagnosed with cancer. After my Dad's death I started finding feathers. Black ones at his grave and cemetaries, a huge amount of unexplained white ones led the way to my cabin at a retreat. Dan lived years beyond my Dad. When I finally bought this CD, and heard the end, speechless. Your images fit so beautifully with the song. Thank you.
We were in 7th grade talking about this new dude from Peoria (50 miles away) singing 'Part of the Plan' Then I buy 'Souveniers', learn guitar and start playing all his tunes, buy every record up to 'High Country Snows' then get married have 2 kids and suddenly I'm 49, he's gone and I'm listening to him tell us all about his passing. It's almost surreal. RIP Danny see you soon.(and when I do I want answers.)
What if Neil Young could sing this good -- would he be looked at differently as an artist. But then we wouldn't have Down By The River, or Rockin' The Free World in its form, but this makes one wonder.
Good question. To me, at least, there's a world of difference between being a good singer and a good vocalist. I don't think Neil Young sings anywhere near as well as Dan did, even in his younger days. However, in terms of evoking emotion and painting a picture through words, Neil and Dan are pretty much in the same boat. And make no mistake, a gruff voice like Neil's can still be remarkably effective in the right context.
Life goes on for the living, but sometimes in the night I feel it, near as my next breath, and yet untouchable... Lover, there will be another one Who'll hover over you beneath the sun Tomorrow see the things that never come Today When you see me Fly away without you Shadow on the things you know Feathers fall around you And show you the way to go It's over, it's over... Thanks for so many beautiful tributes to Dan. We love them all.
Very nice! I miss him and the music that will never be. But, thankfully, he left plenty of wonderful music of which, one song or another, flows though my mind everyday.
Such a beautiful video Donna. Thank you. :-) I still have such a hard time listening to this beautiful song...the tears flow fresh...but for Dan I would walk miles on broken glass...so I guess I can manage a few tears. Thank you.
Donna- you made me cry with this- I believe you knew I would; you knew I created my channel with a simple song I wrote for him decades before his death.
I miss him terribly for the lack of the music he should still be giving us.
And I need you to know you will forever be in my heart for your beautiful tributes to Dan, and your kind words to me and my humble bits of music.
Such a sad and beautiful cover. I can't imagine how Jean must have felt hearing this. I get the feeling that Dan sang this with a tear in his eye and a wink to all of us...despite the lyric, it's not really over, because his legacy and his music will live on long after he has left us. It's hard to listen to this one, but I can't think of a more fitting end to a 37 year career. Rest in peace, Dan. I wish I could have told you in person just how influential your music was to me.
My God, is this gorgeous and movng beyond words. I, too, am facing a serious illness ... and I can't help but feel for my own wife what Dan must have felt singing this song for Jean.
Donna...I love this each and every time I see and hear it...I think I'm losing it most times...thanks, my friend! I've just been so sad about "things" these days....
Just lovely! A feast for the ears and eyes! And from the comments below you have touched so many people - what a wonderful privilege! I apologise that it took so long to view your creation, Donna. I'll be spending some time tonight catching up with you, Bill and Dan. *****
beggarsgame thank you for this. Thank you so much. Even though it's breaking my heart, I thank you. It is absolutely beautiful. Thank you, Dan, for all of the beautiful music you created for us. I miss you so....
Oh this did it. Released on his birthday, & the lyrics-"it's over..." broke the dam & the tears are flowing. I just miss Dan & his music so much - there are no words to express what his music meant to me since the 1970's when I received HomeFree as a gift & fell in love with this man's beautiful music. Yes, it's all still here with us, but as far as all that was still within him to create & share with us for the future, "it's over..." Now to listen to this again. Always Dan will "Let It Shine!"
Again my heart and soul weep. Although I never had the honor or privelege to meet my musical hero, my minstrel, I still to this day feel like I lost a very close friend, one that shared and helped thru all the good times and bad times. I always wanted to just shake his hand, lock eyes and tell him thank you.
A magnificent masterpiece Donna! I went to Plymouth, MA this weekend. Early morning on the harbor, watching the sun, watching it come, and it's going to be a day, there is really no way to say no to the morning, to your beautiful creation, or to Dan's music! Sadness or rejoice, cloudy or sunny, he will always be missed!
This is the first time I've been able to cry over Dan's passing. It's not that I didn't feel the pain and loss, I just wasn't able to cry until now. I think this song and the release of this album really makes it all final...it's over. I don't know how Jean managed the emotional strain of bringing this album to fruition. Thanks Jean for having the strength and courage to give us this final, wonderous, gift from the beautiful soul that was your husband.
First of all thank you Donna for another perfect video to a song, the strains of "To The Morning" with the Dove flying was especially touching. Wow Dan singing a Neil Young song, I never thought I'd ever hear that, this world is such a better place that both have shared their souls with us. Sing on Dan, we miss you.
Doesn't this just tear at your heart? This has to be the saddest song he's written, knowing his end was near. What strength and courage Dan had. Such a remarkable man whom I shall love and admire always.
Big "thank you's " again Donna (pardon me for being familiar) for a wonderful video. Please don't stop your wonderful artistry.
