@Rosee2807 Ohh yess1 :) We came a tad late so we were in the middle but quite close!! :-D GreenBelt was absaloutly AMAZING as per usual this year wasn't it! (-; xxxxxxxxx <3
I'm 15, and I love the amount of passion in this song. (I added my age because of some comments about teenagers having lost the ability to see the beauty in things and that we're no longer proud of our roots. I am!) My godmother runs a farm and I love being out there, but it hurts to realise what has happened to the country life of England. Thanks for this song :)
What a brilliant song - is it just me or is it places that are more mountainous/hilly/geographically interesting that have more proud people? Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, the Lake and Peak Districts?
I'm 16 and from the countryside and have to agree this a top notch song. Afraid to show it to my peers coz i know they'll just criticize it, turn it off and then go back to their meaningless pop bullshit...

How did the messages for Country Life get turned into an argument about Muslims in Britain. Sort yourselves out. This song is about rural depopulation and the shoddy way rural dwellers have been treated.
@sherbert500 The Nazi Party rose to power when the German public lost faith in the larger political parties, and their entire campaign was predicated on the idea that there were enemies within Germany (in their case the Jews), and they had to be expelled from the country for it to prosper. BNP anyone?
Oh, and Thatcher was the worst Prime Minister we've ever had. She sold off half the country and used the money to pay for her own election and a pointless war.
For everything that's wrong with our country, I don't think i'd change it for anything. You can alter the laws as much as you like, there will ALWAYS be people that will take advantage of it.Immigration made this country what it is, even if it is out of control. There are good and bad people of every race and colour. You might see the Taliban, I see the amazing culture, literature and poetry that has come from the huge majority of Muslims.I don't need to be one to appreciate that.
@sherbert500 My children, should I have any will be taught that every single person is entitled to their own views, their own opinions as long as they don't force those views on others and they judge every single person by their own merits. If after this, they become Muslim, they are welcome to. You have such a problem with Islam, but have you read the Koran? Have you met any of the millions of moderate Muslims that make up most of the Islamic world?
@ILoveYourMumAndChips the koran teaches every muslim that anyone who isnt a muslim is a devil that should be killed and that the korans word is law...it also says you should beat your wife and children to make them obey you....there god mohammed had sex with underage children and allows grown men to marry children and beat and have sex with them...why the fuck would i want to read the koran its worse than the bible...become muslim and have no opinion thats the koran for you....
@Englishpatriot2010 you call yourself english patriot yet you want the country awash with the people that wants to kill us lololol that wants england to be turned into a MUSLIM WORLD LOLOLOL now you go wash out that mouth of yours and believe that mohammed is a child molester and that all muslims by there holy book are taught to kill non muslims there book is the devils book ......the sooner everyone realises there isnt a god then the better it will be.............
@sherbert500 Oh I'm so sick of uneducated tools telling me that loving my country means hating an entire group of people for the religion they follow.
by the way it's THEIR holy book not "there"
and when you say it's the "devils book" you should write "devil's" and isnt should be "Isn't".
Some patriot you are, you don't even have command of your own language!
Aside from that, Muslims are not taught to kill all non Muslims at all.
@sherbert500 oh right so all muslims want 2 kill people. I better go and tell my muslim neighbour who has been a doctor in Britain for over 40 years that he's doing a reall good jon hiding his homicidal tendancies. Please get a grip and actually learn something about Islam and ordinary muslims before going on a nazi style bigotted rant
@sherbert500 So you haven't read the Koran. Almost all the Abrahamic religions incite some kind of prejudice and hatred on some level. If you condemn one Muslim because of your perceptions of their faith, you are as bad as every Muslim who condemn the whole of the Western world based on their prejudice. Distancing yourself from that fact makes you more prejudiced than you probably realise. Mutual hatred is a recipe for more of the same. When will people simply learn tolerance and humanity.
@ImperialLobster Maybe you should research the band before you comment. Show of Hands have spoken out against the BNP and performed at Folk Against Fascism in a response to the party's unauthorised use of their tracks.
Don't seem to be able to post URLs on here but the articles are easily found with a spot of Googling.
Vote BNP and your beautiful heritage, people, culture and history are surely going to be lost! It's funny, whenever Germany plays England in football, the UK Murdoch press calls out WW3 on the Germans, but here you are, going all national-socialistic. Good luck with that!
@leanan5 What are you talking about? I hate socialism. Tell me of one party that plans to halt immigration and take Britain back up from the mud... other than the BNP.
Are yes the BNP, the party that does not even know the history of the Country it pretends to protect. I give you the use of the Polish Squadron Spitfire image and Winston Churchill's speech in Zurich (19/9/1946) calling for a United States of Europe. I suggest you actually listen to the words on these songs. As noted the band have spoken out about what they feel about the BNP. But then again facts were never the BNP's strong point.
@rochesterbee yes the polish and romanians and the french and the dutch and many others helped beat hitler and the german war machine BUT it was the british and there defiance and brave troops who won that war...no one else we didnt give in..pity this shitty government and the one before did........bring back thatcher
@ImperialLobster oh dear.... You were being accussed of being a Nazi. Nazi is an acronym of Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, the German National Socialist Workers Party. Also how is Britain in the mud? And why should we stop immigration??
@Calmdowneveryone I don't appeciate being called a nazi, I hate nazis. Why should immigration be stopped? Maybe if you got your head out of the sand and looked out your front door you'd see why.
@ImperialLobster Well you're ideas and ideologies seem to be pretty similar to their; how wonderful our country is compared to everyone else. Ok so have you actually got any genuine reasons for stopping immigration? And incidently if i look out my front door I can see my Yemenese neighbour who has spent over 30 years as a highly skilled doctor/surgeon since immigrating to England, obviously a terrible contribution to Britian...
@Calmdowneveryone I look out of my front door and ALL I see is Muslims. Most are on benefits, and if they aren't they have a job that my dad, who is not finding any work at the moment, would be very grateful of.
I'm not racist. I don't think one nationality or race is better than another, I just know the past few decades of uncontrolled immigration has done nothing for society or the economy. That is why I will vote BNP. They are the only party that plans to do anything about it.
@ImperialLobster You see Muslims because you are looking for Muslims. The brain does that. My granddad, for example, staunchly believes that at least half of Bradford's residents are Pakistani. The actual figure is about 1 in 5.
Come to think of it, though, you hate muslims for scrounging on benefits, and you hate them for taking all the jobs as well? That seems a bit contradictory. Fact is, they are no better or worse than any of the residents of Britain, aand should be treated accordingly.
@sherbert500 What? Oh, sorry, I stopped caring for a minute. Bradford is a well-known Pakistani hotspot, for want of a less derogatory term. Around the rest of the country the figure is a lot lower than 1 in 5. But that's beside the point. Immigrants have nothing to do with the destruction of rural Britain. In fact, nowadays they provide a large part of the manual labour that's the point of the song. If you want someone to blame, try the landowners. Who were as British as anyone could be.
@ImperialLobster So the best way to preserve the heritage of Britian is to vote for a bunch of racist, ignorant bigots? I'm pretty sure some people in Germany in 1933 then something similar about preserving their great country when the voted for a bloke called Adolf HItler.
@Calmdowneveryone its about not being over run by other nations that want to call britain theres! why doesnt anyone understand that? we were once a proud nation of british nationals now were no better than france....fuck immigration fuck the muslims and fuck integration...you want your country and nationality to be nothing good for you...the rest of us will fight to stop it
@sherbert500 Right... I suggest you get your tin foil hat and watch out for the martian invasion while your at it. Try reading some history and you'll realise that what we call Britain is a result of invasion and migration from Europe, oh and England invading and taking over Wales, Scotland and Ireland. And are you really sad enough to think immigration is about taking over Britain and not simple economic? Oh and i'm sure you'd like France, your kind of racism is far more acceptable there.
I now live the country life.( by marriage not city wealth). Country life still exists but it has to compete with towns, cities, etc.. to stay afloat. Allways welcoming but nothing in return, thats why rural life is ripped apart. Wish we could go back to self sustainable communities, and be happy with what we have. Trouble is, folk will allways want whats over the wall. Great song by the way! From little north Wales farmer.
@freddierip1 National Socialism would save the Countryside, self sustained society is what National Socialism is all about, creating your own wealth. not out sourceing to foreign investers.
To be fair, there are still many places were good old country life can still be found. Cumbria for example, and the southwest. However, I agree that this Americanisation crap is taking a toll.
Pretty much what is in the song. Towns have become ghost towns thanks to people buying up property as holiday-homes and never using them. Rural jobs have practically vanished, ways of life have vanished altogether, British Farming's been curb-stomped into nothing by officials and the EU...We're a shell of what we once were, the self sufficient nation.
@TechbotALPHA Fair play mate, I take your word for it, the EU is a joke anyway, 43 million a day to be members of an undemocratic superstate ran by marxist bureaucrats who don't represent anyone but themselves. Makes me sick.
Agreed. All it takes for evil to win is for good men to do nothing, and all that. And that's the problem. I'd wager that everyone in the UK knows it's gone sour, but...no one does anything.
We don't need anything as drastic as what's happened in countries like Egypt, but we do need people telling the current parties "You've failed us way too many times. You don't serve us. Hop it. This is our Country, our Lives. We're taking them back from thieves like you."
@Karateworm it's not happened only in England..... also in the rest of the world, like in my country, Italy..... I'm so sad that now in the field where I used to play with my friends when we were younger there's a dirty and useless building......
My pal lent me the Country Life cd - can't believe how good they are. The words to this song are so true. I live in rural North Yorkshire and see this happening all around us.
Why has everyone under 30 suddenly become 'American' we have culture...the Americans have wealth and material things...but sadly that's what most of the young generation here aspire to.....so fucking sad!
1st Class Band. The sad reality is it's a changing world globaly, mostly for the worst. The farming industrie like others here in england has been sold out by the British Goverment. Country side house prices are now mainly out of reach of locals, & with farms being mechanised & the sheep & dairy farmers doing the work of 2 men to make ends meet = less local work. The goverment tried to sort it in 2001 with foot & mouth ! Still very strong minded real people with a sense of belonging & culture
Im from America and I think about britain all of the time. much of my heritage goes back their, and much of it can be very well respected their as well. now i conider myself british, just born in another country. Americans greatly respect britain and many know that their ancestors are from britain. So i think britain and the united states are united in that way. I would to fill bad if british culture was to be lost. Also i hope that many british would welcome Americans more that are bristish.
I think all rural parts of the world have people getting displaced by wealthier city transplants, we get promised that more government regulations will "preserve the quality of rural life" but that means making it too expensive for anyone but the wealthy to buy and build a home. And force teh rest of us out.
saw show of hands at exeter cathedral last night. what a show. never really been into folk music but this has changed things. magical performance in a magical setting!
Thanks to all the Americans - but this is about Devon. Yes, in England! And if you have ever grown up there you will totally understand this song. It is about how the Londoners have bought up all the little country cottages and outpriced the locals. And villages have literally died off in the winter. They are not banging on about anything deeper than that - which, by the way, I think is deep enough!
Steve Knightly has a point here. There are Londoners selling a 2 bed flat in Chelsea for around £500,000 and they are buying up the properties in Cornwall, pricing out the locals. There should be a law against it.
@darkmere365 Spot on matey! They are starting to single out certain properties and insist that buyers have a 3 years connection to the county. Unfortunately, even they are over priced and sit unsold for over two years. Oh well!
@darkmere365 Yes, there should. It's happening here in Canada too. Towns you couldn't get anyone out to on a Sunday drive 25 years ago are now buried beneath new subdivisions. Those who came out first and bought up the old "character" homes bemoan the lack of private schools, theatres, etc, but won't move back. What I want to know is, what are we going to eat, once all the farmland is covered with houses and shopping malls?
Yes, people can be pedantic, oppressively snobbish, ready to denigrate someone because of a slip in a grammar, a less than bulging at the seams vocabulary. etc.
But, come on, let's not bash people- I mean, people we don't know or whose voice we can't hear to know whether their words are wearing a smug tone- as grammar Nazis(hey, don't jump on me for paying attention to capitals).
One of Devons greatest success stories started with the guys growing up on opposite sides of the River Exe, though Steve was born in Southampton and Phil hailed from Cornwall. Their teenage kicks were playing in different bands but eventually their paths crossed and they joined forces to play the Exeter pub and club scene before they inevitably took off in different directions
I wish that we could go back to a pretty rural land. I miss my old country. I'm only 18, but I feel that I've lived long enough to see too many changes and that disheartens me. I wish we could have an older way of life, but new generations create new ways of life and love. I am just waiting for the day that we tear up everything and on that day, I will cry.
Fortunately my village has been maily spared what is pointed out in this song but it is not immune to the aging population and I might find it difficult to stay on in my village once I start getting a job. It won't exactly be a rural one.
Watching this video from Cornwall. Kind of fitting as this is a Cornish band.... We are learning about this in Geography; conter-urbanisation and the rural-urban fringe. x
Well, nothing, other than BrainyBabe24 suggested that they were a Cornish band, and I had previously been pretty sure that they were from Devon. I wasn't trying to start some kind of Devon vs. Cornwall battle.
Oh, sorry. Good chance they are. Both areas are affected by the things they are singing of, so maybe. ;) I'm not Cornish, just live here, so I don't really get the whole Devon vs. Cornwall thing. :D Thanks for pointing it out though.
@BrainyBabe24 That's cool. I wasn't trying to be provocative at all. I happen to be from Devon and I'd thought they were from exeter area, that's all. You're absolutely right - these issues are ones which effect both counties and are all too frequently sidelined.
i love this song and it means alot to me as well as roots as i live in the south of england in Dorest where we still have alot of our roots though in the country everything is getting taken over and dimolished.
i think we should stand for who and what we are. no matter where we are from we should remember it.
About roots, I wish we had some. I am American and we have no real roots. The last people who stood up for their Heritage ended up dead ( The Civil War).
@williamwallac94, every American came from somewhere, every living person on this planet has roots. You may have English ancestry, Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, French - anything... There is something to be proud of in every culture.
As for losing roots, try living in Canada, withthe American juggernaut just over your southern border. People here don't "sound" Canadian as they once did - I can still, if the speaker is old enough, tell a stubblejumper (from Saskatchewan) from an Ontarian from a Nova Scotian, but as speakers get younger, and more exposed to American television and radio, it's getting much harder. Even the distinctive Newfoundland accents are disappearing.
Exactly the same problem down here in OZ. The 'ocker' accent is dying fast. The Waifs and Angie Hart are the last true sounding Australian music makers.
i'm from north Italy and some years ago we were near to lost our roots. But I live in a little village near Lake Garda and here we are proud of our roots: our language (Gallic Dialect), our football clubs (Milan, Brescia, Verona) and our wine... maybe we drink too much wine...
I do however feel, on coming to university in England that you English teenagers/young adults feel somewhat ashamed of their heritage and would rather sign up to this Americanized, globalisation culture, of Akon playing on your stereo, what's the answer? I'd be sad to see English culture disappear.
@TheKomodoDude FUCK off. I live our culture. It is free speech and cricket and fair play and a sense of propriety and most importantly it is doing the right thing even when it isn't the easiest thing. Just because a majority have lost their way doesn't meant their is no english culture. This would be a happier land if people lived it rather than just pretended it wasn't their.
@TheJinkedful -.-....well better brush up on your english then....we dont want the tourists to think that even an englishman cant speak proper english....
@FuriousBOIAngel I'm not ashamed of my heritage and my past; I'm ashamed of my present and my generation. It's almost like passion has been dulled; no one is truly passionate about anything real. Young people have lost the ability to truly love something and see the beauty in things. It's sad.
@Emmie3303 What's sad here is that you are claiming that the only 'real' passions are the ones that you decide, it seems. What exactly would you call a 'real passion'? Because, honestly, whatever you say is only an opinion, your opinion. I am quite offended, and worst, disgusted. You are not superior to everyone else. You need to grow up.
@15niall Sorry for all the comments. I was a little upset and surprised before when I initially read your comment. I can see how it would appear that I was trying to be superior but that really was not my intention and I certainly do not feel superior either. I simply meant that I feel like I don't fit into my own generation. May I ask why you feel personally offended? I'm talking about people aged 15-21. Maybe I was overgeneralising but it is still just my opinion and by no means a fact.
@Emmie3303 " Young people have lost the ability to truly love something and see the beauty in things" Thats simply not true :-) I wish people would stop saying things like that. Every generation has had shallow and materialistic people and every generation is what their parents have made them.
@Halldisa Fair enough =]. It's just from my experience with my own generation people seem to want to be the same as eachother instead of celebrating their individuality. I suppose that could apply to every generation though as you've said.
@Halldisa Although, saying that, since moving away from home and mixing with lots of different people I've certainly changed my views a lot. Young people are passionate but you just have to look a little harder.
@Emmie3303 think of all our ancestors who lived their lives without going 10 miles from their village or knowing whats beyond it. its nothing new. its just a bit more astonishing now with the global world we live it.
@Halldisa I completely agree. Although you can have passion for things that seem fairly mundane to others; there are plenty of beautiful things to be found in the 10 miles around your home =].
@Emmie3303 I'm 16, went to the shrewsbury folk festival this weekend, and Show of Hands were my favourite. I have a love for music, history, and social standing and politics. While i agree with you, don't simply say 'young people'. At least say 'some young people' thank you. I also had the honour of a 'hello' and a nod from Steve Knightly while i was buying a full english breakfast there! Fantastic weekend.
@lostgoneinthebin123 I think I did overgeneralise a little bit but you can't edit YT comments unfortunately =[. I'm glad you had a lovely time at the folk festival!
@tubbs380 They're amazing live aren't they =]. To be honest since writing that comment I've had a change of heart but I can't edit it so I've left it there anyway.
this song and band isn't racist at all, but many of these comments are. there are people arguing over whose ancestors won in the battle of hastings. pathetic...
one mans family pays the price for another mans vision of country life-See you in Kernow next week SoH-Can't wait. Go and see them live, it's the best piece of advice I can give you!
I cant wait to see SOH in Cornwall next week. I hope they do Country Life-love this one, love SOH -go and see them live-it'll be the most rewarding night of your year!

ImperialLobster 11 months ago
@ImperialLobster - fitting name, btw
Vote BNP and your beautiful heritage, people, culture and history are surely going to be lost! It's funny, whenever Germany plays England in football, the UK Murdoch press calls out WW3 on the Germans, but here you are, going all national-socialistic. Good luck with that!
leanan5 10 months ago
@leanan5 What are you talking about? I hate socialism. Tell me of one party that plans to halt immigration and take Britain back up from the mud... other than the BNP.
ImperialLobster 10 months ago
@ImperialLobster
But then again facts were never the BNP's strong point.
rochesterbee 10 months ago
@rochesterbee yes the polish and romanians and the french and the dutch and many others helped beat hitler and the german war machine BUT it was the british and there defiance and brave troops who won that war...no one else we didnt give in..pity this shitty government and the one before did........bring back thatcher
sherbert500 10 months ago
@ImperialLobster oh dear.... You were being accussed of being a Nazi. Nazi is an acronym of Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, the German National Socialist Workers Party. Also how is Britain in the mud? And why should we stop immigration??
Calmdowneveryone 10 months ago
@Calmdowneveryone I don't appeciate being called a nazi, I hate nazis. Why should immigration be stopped? Maybe if you got your head out of the sand and looked out your front door you'd see why.
ImperialLobster 10 months ago
@ImperialLobster Well you're ideas and ideologies seem to be pretty similar to their; how wonderful our country is compared to everyone else. Ok so have you actually got any genuine reasons for stopping immigration? And incidently if i look out my front door I can see my Yemenese neighbour who has spent over 30 years as a highly skilled doctor/surgeon since immigrating to England, obviously a terrible contribution to Britian...
Calmdowneveryone 10 months ago
@Calmdowneveryone I look out of my front door and ALL I see is Muslims. Most are on benefits, and if they aren't they have a job that my dad, who is not finding any work at the moment, would be very grateful of.
I'm not racist. I don't think one nationality or race is better than another, I just know the past few decades of uncontrolled immigration has done nothing for society or the economy. That is why I will vote BNP. They are the only party that plans to do anything about it.
ImperialLobster 10 months ago
@ImperialLobster You see Muslims because you are looking for Muslims. The brain does that. My granddad, for example, staunchly believes that at least half of Bradford's residents are Pakistani. The actual figure is about 1 in 5.
Come to think of it, though, you hate muslims for scrounging on benefits, and you hate them for taking all the jobs as well? That seems a bit contradictory. Fact is, they are no better or worse than any of the residents of Britain, aand should be treated accordingly.
SuperChickencow 10 months ago 2
@SuperChickencow you dont see the problem that 1 in 5 are pakistani?????????? your the reason britain has given up u fucking asshole
sherbert500 10 months ago
@sherbert500 What? Oh, sorry, I stopped caring for a minute. Bradford is a well-known Pakistani hotspot, for want of a less derogatory term. Around the rest of the country the figure is a lot lower than 1 in 5. But that's beside the point. Immigrants have nothing to do with the destruction of rural Britain. In fact, nowadays they provide a large part of the manual labour that's the point of the song. If you want someone to blame, try the landowners. Who were as British as anyone could be.
SuperChickencow 9 months ago
@ImperialLobster well said
sherbert500 10 months ago
@ImperialLobster So the best way to preserve the heritage of Britian is to vote for a bunch of racist, ignorant bigots? I'm pretty sure some people in Germany in 1933 then something similar about preserving their great country when the voted for a bloke called Adolf HItler.
Calmdowneveryone 10 months ago
@Calmdowneveryone its about not being over run by other nations that want to call britain theres! why doesnt anyone understand that? we were once a proud nation of british nationals now were no better than france....fuck immigration fuck the muslims and fuck integration...you want your country and nationality to be nothing good for you...the rest of us will fight to stop it
sherbert500 10 months ago
@sherbert500 Agreed.
ImperialLobster 10 months ago

TechbotALPHA 4 months ago in playlist Liked 3
@TechbotALPHA Fair play mate, I take your word for it, the EU is a joke anyway, 43 million a day to be members of an undemocratic superstate ran by marxist bureaucrats who don't represent anyone but themselves. Makes me sick.

@EnglishNationalist13

Oh well!
MsElloyd 1 year ago
@darkmere365 Yes, there should. It's happening here in Canada too. Towns you couldn't get anyone out to on a Sunday drive 25 years ago are now buried beneath new subdivisions. Those who came out first and bought up the old "character" homes bemoan the lack of private schools, theatres, etc, but won't move back. What I want to know is, what are we going to eat, once all the farmland is covered with houses and shopping malls?

Yes, people can be pedantic, oppressively snobbish, ready to denigrate someone because of a slip in a grammar, a less than bulging at the seams vocabulary. etc.
But, come on, let's not bash people- I mean, people we don't know or whose voice we can't hear to know whether their words are wearing a smug tone- as grammar Nazis(hey, don't jump on me for paying attention to capitals).

and yes Devon is Gods country!

@BrainyBabe24 That's cool. I wasn't trying to be provocative at all. I happen to be from Devon and I'd thought they were from exeter area, that's all. You're absolutely right - these issues are ones which effect both counties and are all too frequently sidelined.

Even the distinctive Newfoundland accents are disappearing.
crlcripps 2 years ago
Exactly the same problem down here in OZ. The 'ocker' accent is dying fast. The Waifs and Angie Hart are the last true sounding Australian music makers.

@FuriousBOIAngel I'm not ashamed of my heritage and my past; I'm ashamed of my present and my generation. It's almost like passion has been dulled; no one is truly passionate about anything real. Young people have lost the ability to truly love something and see the beauty in things. It's sad.
Emmie3303 1 year ago 32

Emmie3303 6 months ago
@Emmie3303 " Young people have lost the ability to truly love something and see the beauty in things" Thats simply not true :-) I wish people would stop saying things like that. Every generation has had shallow and materialistic people and every generation is what their parents have made them.
Halldisa 5 months ago 2
@Halldisa Fair enough =]. It's just from my experience with my own generation people seem to want to be the same as eachother instead of celebrating their individuality. I suppose that could apply to every generation though as you've said.
Emmie3303 5 months ago
@Halldisa Although, saying that, since moving away from home and mixing with lots of different people I've certainly changed my views a lot. Young people are passionate but you just have to look a little harder.
Emmie3303 5 months ago
@Emmie3303 think of all our ancestors who lived their lives without going 10 miles from their village or knowing whats beyond it. its nothing new. its just a bit more astonishing now with the global world we live it.
