imagine SNL's final show and how amazing the saxophone solo will be. Probably like 20 minutes long. My buddy's dad will watch just the end of SNL for the sax and for good reason.
Lord have Mercy... This is soooo gooood.....I looked for this theme about 15 years ago, found it and it still thrills me everytime that I listening to it. I am a 63 old man now and can listen to this all day long.... What is it? What about it?
I really know nothing about music, but the saxophone really has to be one of man's greatest inventions, it's totally underrated! And this song, along with the way Lenny Pickett plays it, absolutely fantastic!
Hey, the one from last night (5/21/2011) was so amazing. He covered like 7 octaves or more! Crazy! Please find the whole thing and get it up ASAP. Thanks!
@dratl1487 Perhaps you're the one who should wake up and listen closely, as the songs sound completely different and have different chord progressions. If anything, sofa n1 is a lousy imitation of Waltz in A
@SNLThemeAddict Well, first of all, while you're right that it does have a different chord progression, and he's wrong that it's a ripoff of Sofa #1, you're also incorrect in saying Sofa is a ripoff of Waltz in A, as Sofa was written before SNL came into existence..
@SNLThemeAddict I totally agree with you dude. GE Smith was playing the same theme years ago. I don't think that they have anything in common with the Frank Zappa song.
I appreciate you putting this on YouTube. I've been searching for a great SNL closing to put on CD for years. Tonight I finally found one. Thanks for the remix and if you can, please do one with GE Smith. :)
whew you are sooo right that it brings back memories!!!! everytime!!! It sounds so sad but yet so uplifting...man is that the sax killing it whew!!! such a great song!!! I almost cry when i hear it thinking of all the past members that are no longer on the show or alive....so good...yet soo sad...great song!!!!
Melodically amazing!!! Technically it's so ethereal and soulful you'd have to have half a heart not to be move by such emotion. Lenny Pickett is musics best keep secret. He's a savant with divine talent and resides in the milieu of brilliance with Davis, Munk, Parker , Yo Yo Ma and the other greats!
Does anyone know of any bands or songs that sound like this???? None of Lenny's songs on his cds are even close to the blues feel in the SNL Closing Theme, and you cannot buy it anywhere either. PLEASE POST!!
Lenny is the man , he's the best sax player ever, ever ,ever, this is the best sax music also, thanks Lenny. Never get tired of listening to this. the best ....
omg yes i love it....The most resent one i seen was sat 9/4/10...made me look it up to see who the hell was screamin on that sax....lol he's amazing! and i have a orchestra background!! thanks snl addict!!!
I have looked for this piece for a long time, thanks for the post. Never knew who thisamazing "sax" player until now; got get some of his stuff. One of the only reason I watched SNL was to hear this song at the end. Hated it when it was cut short, thanks again.
If I see Lenny go before I do, that'll be one of the saddest days ever; he and Stevie Wonder. Damn he's an amazing horn player!!! You know you're good when people are creating entire playlists of your pre and postlude performances from a tv show. Lol!!!
I wonder what kind of horn Lenny has--I can't see the label too well from this perspective...then again he could make a piece of crap sound like this horn. My god--his altissimo!!!!!!!
Nope. he switched to a relaq'd SBA, albeit a late one, although the serial number eludes me ATM.
you can see by the octave mech in recent pictures...it resembles an old buescher, king, or conn mech. than the ones with the Selmer "S" of the Mark VI
@alirzb I had a recording session with him last night. He was still playing the same mark vi he has always played. As far as I know his only other horn is an older 62 that he uses on occasion.

this song is a ripoff of frank zappa's sofa n1, wake up.

@SNLThemeAddict Actually, Sofa No. 1 was released and recorded first and has absolutely positively nothing to do with Waltz in A.

@DrHouse779 I THINK he plays a Selmer Mark VI which aren't made anymore, so they're very expensive. That and a Berg Larsen.

@ffgew22 yeah, he's on a late 60's mark vi and a 130/0 berg

Really! I've seen him in photos with the SBA octave mech, and others with a full-fledged SBA horn. Maybe this was an experiment?
And that's interesting about the YTS-62...not entirely surprising though, the old purple-logo yamaha's can peel paint off the walls!
