  • The current definition in the USA DSM 4 is that people with aspergers do not have speech delays and thereofre often have no speech difficulties at all wheras people with other forms of autism learn to speak late and therefore often have speech difficulties. Apsergers by defintion have average or above average inteligence. Austitics range from "retarded" to "genuius" though both terms are misleading because theire interests and abilities tend to be very focused in certain areas.

  • And in classic autism, the very mildly affected (with the help of therapies) will usually develop speech and sometimes can have normal intellectual functioning making then High Functioning. This is the main difference between aspergers and HFA. Please post your comment if you differ.

  • I tend to differ on what Qazi said with reference to low functioning autism and high functioning being aspergers... If you check the National Autistic society website (uk), you will find that Aspergers syndrome differs from HFA autism. In aspergers a child acquires speech and then the symptoms of autism start to develop so there are not as much problems in the speech area. However in Classic autism (i,e when a child doesnt speak at all by the age of 18-24month), there can be mild, mod or severe
