WOW. Seriously impressive. I am currently building my first kit, a Laser models Laser 3D, and what scares me the most is when I finish the build and have to cover it. You made it look quite easy, however, I imagine that you have alot of experience. Great video!
@zvent1 Thanks for your comment! Covering can seem tricky but here's a few things I learned.
1. Coverings are all very different. I use ProFilm (OraCover, etc) because it's very forgiving - Some light films are not so! Having said that, you can heat-out most crinkles.
2. When covering wings (possibly fins), heat a bit on the top, then a bit on the bottom, if you do one complete side, it might warp
3. Have lots of sharp blades to cut the material and don't worry, you can always recover!
It's ProFilm (also OraCover and something else). It's a heat shrink plastic covering you "iron" on and then shrink. I like ProFilm for it's ease of use, SolarFilm works just the same.
The heat shrink plastic replaces the old tissue and dope method - it's strong, lightweight, durable and comes in many colours (opaque and transparent)
Thanks! Long videos aren't popular on YouTube but I needed to use the whole time so it wasn't all just a blur!
The camera would record when it sensed motion but the entire footage added up to 30 minutes or more (from memory). I sped up the footage in Adobe Premiere so it's timelapse but not per frame.
Stay tuned, I'm going to film my next plane build and try get a better angle including the radio installation.
I love it, Inspires me to build a plane, im debating on if I should go build one, im looking at a 1/4 piper kit. Is it "hard" to build a kit for the first time?
The Stevens AeroModels are a pleasure to build. If you've not built a plane before, try go for one that's laser cut - they are so easy to use. 1/4 piper would be quite big! The biggest plane I've built is a 63inch Sig Kadet LT-25.
Building a plane and then having it fly is such a rewarding process.
Awesome! Wish I had the time to build a kit again. Maybe some day.

Great job!
Is there any forgiving planes to build, for beginners? :)
Got some experience with flying, but not with building.

Wow and it took me all winter to build one! You and my ex-wife would get a long!
revmkell 2 years ago
:P It's taking me all winter (and spring so far) to finish a Sig Somethin Extra but I'm also filming that one in the same way.
This time I'm going to cover the radio and covering if I can... All* of it.

* at least 99% of the plane build anyway!

They're great planes :D I've had two now (this one caught caught in bushes and I got stung by three wasps trying to get it out of the thorns.
My current one (which if you look through my 5009 photos video, you'll see) is still flying strong
(I built it much better the second time!)

That was very cool. I didn't think I would watch the whole vid but I did. It was worth it. What was the time lapse between frames?

Love the Vid, Thanks for posting!
BUT, looking at the plane in the garden, i thought to myself.. Hmmm.. what would the plane look like if it had graffiti and stylish design colours?

how much does a plane like that cost
pow595 3 years ago
The plane was £45 from Micron Radio Control - the bits and pieces cost more that go in it but you could just build the airframe and admire it :D
