Say, you still have your challenger?  I love the look of your ride hight. How did you get that. I have a 70 440 6 pk and love the stance of your car. I had air shocks on it but the ride was way to bouncy . Put kyb on it now and it sites level. I want the more raked look .

When it's idle, what makes the popping/rattling sound?

Mainly valve overlap due to higher duration. High compression also affects the sound pulses and note. At idle, I can actually feel the exhaust pulses against my calves when I'm almost 5 feet back from the exhaust tips. And mine is only a mild 340 with an RT exhaust system. I'm sure this guys real RT is same way.

The only thing I ever heard an LS6 do was spark knock. As far as being overrated all you have to do is look to Funny Car and Top Fuel class in NHRA. They didn't base the design of these engines on any crap chevrolet ever made.

LS6 Chevelles ran 13.14 off the showroom floor with 450hp. On both the street & track I have wittnesed many hemi's losing bad. On one friday summer night I saw a young man(the proud new owner of a 70 Hemi Cuda) Race for pinks and lose to a 69 Vette 427. And both cars were stock.

I also watched while riding shotgun in my buddies 70 Chevelle LS6 M22 as he kicked a 70 Hemi RoadRunner 4sd butt 3 times back to back.

Like I said before Hemi is a overated motor.

The 426 Hemi is not overrated at all, it is the king! It was such an advnaced engine for its time and even today. And for your little comparrision of the Hemi vs. 427, I have seen many 340 Dusters and Darts just mop up 396 Chevelles and Novas.
