I have a astro van 350k miles and it has a low knock I got the pan off now. No play in rods that I can tell but I'm still hoping to pull the caps and check them may be something else will see.
did you replace all of the bearings or just the damaged ones and i saw you didn't take the motor out. to do the job i am assuming that's not needed, that's kind of how i am doing with one of my trucks too at the moment. i don't mean to sound stupid with these questions but this is something i have never done before, it's an older truck so i don't want to sink a whoole lot of anything in it just get it going again as cheap as possible.
Hey how did you get the oil pan back on? There isnt enough room to squeeze a mouse fart in there. And how did you not screw up the timing cover gasket in the process?
ive seen some stupid shit on here of people fixing cars and blowing them up on purpose BUT THESE TWO MEN ARE AWESOME!!!!! they really fixed it to fix it and not to tear it up LETS GIVE THEM A BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE great video i did this to my 1979 chevy 350 that got antifreeze in the oil and wore the bearings down to copper used emery like yall did and put new bearings 10,000 miles later still running great i use castrol syntec and lucas oil stabilizer
It's no surprise the engine bearings held up for the demostration. The knocking sound comes from rod journals that have been slamming against the crakshaft. due to worn bearings. Sometimes scoring the crankshaft but in every case the rod is battered out of round.. These engines parts are damaged ruining the new bearing in short order.. The real culprit. is lack of Oil. Several possible causes Ususally poor owner maintenence. / mechanical failure/ oil types/ Mileage.
We did this to a buddy's Cherokee with the 4.0L and 198k miles. No more knocking. We put a high volume oil pump in it to make sure it had strong oil pressure. He sold it with 230k miles and it still was running good. Good fix!
Can hear from the startup that the clearances are still way off from the scored journals. Not a permanent fix, but it can band-aid the motor for a bit to keep it going.
DAM MAIN WHERE R U LOCATED HELL I NEED 2 BRING MY CAR 2 U I GOT A 98 INTREPID 2.7 WITH 148633 MILE ON IT AND 1 DAY IT RAN HOT ON ME I WAS 15 MIN FROM HOME IT KNOCKED TIL I GOT HOME AND I CUT IT OFF AND 2 HOUR LATER I TRIED 2 CRANK IT BACK UP AND IT WANT START I HAD THE OIL CHANGE BE FOR IT HAPPEN AND I HAD A TUNE UP RAN IT RAN GOOD UNTIL THAT 1 TIME IT RAN HOT ON ME SO CAN U HELP ME IT HAS A VERY NICE BODY AND INSIDE LOOKS GOOD I REALLY HATE 2 PUSH IT IN A LAKE
@MRHUNGLOW100 if you try to start it and you hear a click (and know that the battery is good), that means the motor is locked up and is junk, when you drive a car hot and just keep driving it you run the chance of blowing the motor and or locking it up. in both cases the motor is screwed.
question...you removed the oil pan which gave you access to the oil pump and the bearings???? So do i go to my nearest NAPA parts place and get a set of rod bearings for my grand prix? and a how to manual or can you guys help me out????
this worked for me!! had a 04 with a knock dropd the oil pan found a part of a bearing took each one off one at a time and inspected them went ahead and replaced all of them did take a lot of work polishing a few of the areas back up with the cloth deff. game my arms a work out ive put 3k miles on since no prob since with the new bearsing and a new oil pan gasket it was way under a 100 bucks thanks
Thats crazy.. you guys give me hopes for mine! I have an 01 Intrepid and it sounded like it was knocking! 143k miles on mine! What did you do to get it fixed??? I can get you my email if you would like!
Well with 150,000 miles on it I think that engine had a decent life. The 3.2 and 3.5 are way better though and you don't have the 2.7 problems either.
hey i have a 92 civic with a d16z6 engine i replaced the rods but cant replace the main bearings because there is not enough space so my question is do i have to take the crankshaft off? i really dont wanna do that but if it's the only way then i will also do i have to take out the tranny to take the shaft out. i looked it up on the internet and some said in order to do that you have to take the tranny out. k thanks
Saved a cars life and let it go! Did it at any time develop any kind of knock after changing the rod bearings until it got REPO'd? I'm debating on doing this to my Nissan :)
@TX97SR20DET what kind of nissan, either way if you get in there and you see something that you are not sure will survive fix it and let it go. You just have to see how bad the damage is and debate it if it seems secure than keep it if not at least rig it and trade it. Your nissan is probably different, these cars develope this no matter what you do. I'll check your channel now for more info.
well theirs your problem right their, you use Pennzoil that is shit oil and bad for engines it gums up yore lifters and everything else ive worked on cars of 3 years and is a college student in automotive
@furryone66 "and is a college student "are you sure you passed grammer either way it hasn't even had pennzoil in it until this and that's not the issue the issue these engines are garbage there was no sludge or gummed up oil in this engine. So if you haven't learned yet what makes oil break down in college it's not the type of oil, it is heat and poor circulation of the oil tHAT causes heat and combustion gasses getting into the oil that breaks it down it has nothing to do with the type of oil
@downinaholega You're exactly right. I'd say over 3/4 of Intrepids I've ever seen or heard of have been smoking like crazy or blown up... These engines are junk (no offense, but the results speak for themself). As for oil, I've always used Castrol GTX. I've used it since day one in my 1990 Z24 Cavalier (278,000 miles on original engine when I sold it), my 1988 Nissan V6 pickup (301,000 miles on it now) and my 1997 Z24 (172,000 miles). Quaker State is the only oil I've heard of that "gums up"
He who lives in a glass house, should NOT throw rocks! Just so you know pal..... It's spelled "GRAMMAR" not "GRAMMER" .... now you look like the IDIOT!
@downinaholega "are you sure you passed grammer?" lol, irony. i don't think proper grammar is an adequate standard for measuring intelligence; and, if it is, then the complete lack of punctuation in your reply would indicate that you are worse off intellectually than the fellow you're berating.
the new 2.7s are very good .only the 98-02 had probs.but they ve fixed al that especaily for the 300s and chargers. the motor is entirely different and has different tuning
Is it absolutely necessary to get the rods machined if replacing the bearings? If they're not that bad looking, what would be a rough estimate of how long before they fail again?
man those motor suck i have a 2004 increpid and it knock we put in bearings, then 6mo. later the oil pump went, after i fixed that the lifters where sticking but finally let loose but not all the way im running straight 50w oil just so it stays quit
hey i just wanted to let you no i used your 14 step proces and i fixed my girls intrepid it really wasnt as hard as i thought it was going to be i was going to have to sell my dirt bike to buy her a new car thanks man you saved my riding days thanks alot man i have a question tho after you put it all in did you guys run synthitic oil or regular and did his car have any other problems with it besides the water pump
@srave95 no more problems but for the money you spent if you got another month out of it it's worth it best thing to do is just trade it in. BTW glad to have helped and heaven forbid sell the dirtbike at least it's probably more trustworthy than these things LOL
id like to see a follow up vid to this lol. Where do you think all the metal from the original bearings went? When the rods were slamming against the crank, dont you think the tolerances changed?? Also.....turn it over to make sure its not too tight?? Ever hear of Plast-gage?? Lmao this is too funny. This is why technicians have to write a test to become licensed. its people that do shit like this that give mechanics a bad name!
@MIketucky350 It does'nt matter to me what piece of junk engine is in these Chryslers.I have the "bulletproof" 3800 Series 2 in my Grand Prix which will leave the 2.7 still looking for the ignition.
That's more of a partial fix. The knock was only a symptom of the underlying problem. These motors build up sludge and it causes all kinds of damage and wear. There are a few good write-ups on the procedures to fix them, but it's not cheap. The shitty thing is, people try to pawn them off on someone else after doing a quick "fix" to the motor.
@schmiddr2 Oh i see, yea people are dicks to sell them these shitty motors with temporary fixes. if that were to happen to me i think i would just sticka 3.5 in it.
@schmiddr2 I change my oil every 2,000 miles or so. Got the car when it had 36,000 on it and I have driven it all the way to 120,000. I've got the knock now. It's only a matter of time before it goes.
yeah the 2.7, 3.2, and 3.5 were the engines they used in that the 3.2 and 3.5 are reliable and great engines especially the 3.5 makes some good horsepower I think around 235 in the last generation intrepid. I'm glad you boys were able to fix that old 2.7 I'm buying a running driving 2001 sebring convertible with the 2.7 in it, and hell if you guys can fix that one, maybe I can fix mine.. we'll see. But a big thank you, I'll be using this video as a reference.
those dodge intrepids always having minor problems, i never owned one though a riends did he had to replace the key ignition, and the hood wont open, nd a whole bunch of simple stuff, i dont know about the second gen ones though
Shit like this is why car companies are in the pickle they're in. The 3.3 in the Caravan/T&C doesn't seem to have any issues. Why would Chrysler make one good motor and another a shit pile?
mines making knocking noises and kinda squeeks every now and then. once its warmed up it dies sometimes when u let it idle or the rpms get really low and in an effort to keep itself running it rev's itself. i changed the oil today and when i took of the bolt on the oil pan there was a bunch of sludge stuck on the tip... anyways what im getting to is how much would it cost to get it repaired by someone?
If you can afford it drop a 3.2 or 3.5 engine in place of the 2.7 engine. The car will be very reliable and if maintained will get you passed 200,000 miles on that engine. just make sure to match years. 1999-2001 and 2002-2004. so if you got a 2000 then only use an engine and parts from a 1999-2001. good luck
The water pumps on these engines aren't exactly fun to work on either. The part is $90 for a new one and driven by the timing chain. I'm going to do mine when the engine gets to 90k, just to be on the safe side.
That whining noise is the idler pulley for p/s and alt. belt. Change it soon if you are keeping the car. Mine broke on the freeway at about 33,000 miles, now has 104,000 and is making the noise again. I'll go with an aftermarket one this time instead of original Mopar brand idler.
yeah it did fine except about 3 days later the waterpump started leaking and he has yet to come up with a pump and labor fee for me install. when he does fix he is going to trade. The bearings could last and might not
yea mine is knocking bad i drove it for a while and it cut off as soon as i got home so im thinking it is the bearings also is it hard to replace them
That's awesome that you got 170,000 on that engine. My engine only has 33,000 on it now and I plan on running auto rx in the engine to make sure no sludge ever builds up in the engine, pluse royal purpil oil. I'm gonna swap to the 3.5 if I ever have major problems with this engine. Good luck with selling it

That 2.7L motor is very bad. The only chance of running these motors over 100,000 miles is if they were using Mobil 1, changing every 3-5k.
Otherwise, with dino oil, this engine sludges and dies.

yeah it did fine except about 3 days later the waterpump started leaking and he has yet to come up with a pump and labor fee for me install. when he does fix he is going to trade. The bearings could last and might not
