They can, but it's very difficult. It goes into interpretation alot - No matter the language there is always away to say what you mean. Figuring out how, vice just going word for word is what seperates the good from the great. IMO anyway.
@shyngo The syllables fit about as well as they can while still rhyming and retaining the original purpose behind the lines. Many of the translations I've seen of this song, as well as Japanese songs in general, try too hard to be a word for word translation and as a result, rarely rhyme or even make sense. It's not perfect, but it is probably one of the best translations I've heard of this song... but maybe I'm biased. ^_^
