  • He must be a HIGH ranking dancer in his line of work. he has a great face that looks like it walked out of a traditional Japanese painting and he has studied women's movement perfectly. He is so AMAZING!

  • i cannot believe that this is a man. he is exquisite. every move is a display of his costume. every movemet he is aware if his performance. it is simply elegant....true art..needing no set...and the narration is most helpfull in understanding the subtle nuances of the performance. I am most impressed

  • does anyone know the name of this actress....is it a man or a woman?

  • is so hypnotic, so beautiful ...

  • gives me tears

  • @kubirauntain

  • so smooth and perfect. at times i had trouble believing that he's a human and not an extremely well made animatronic.

  • He is the best

  • Actually the President of Japanese Class did visit us...He performed 3 dances...I was captivated...felt refreshing...No wonder he's the president

  • It's great to hear an explanation of the meanings of this! Thanks for the upload!

  • is this a person or a doll?

  • @topvidzs

    Person...with MUUUUUUUUUCH skill !

  • Fucking bullshit narration .

  • @shiroisaru95300

he's actually one of the great experts on Kabuki! A little respect please. Obviously not a Japanese....

  • @shiroisaru95300 the fucking bullshit narration as you call it is paul m griffiths he is the most knoledgeable non japanese about kabuki and a close friend of tamasaburo and for the record the reason why this dvd exists so you might want to show him a little respect

  • I love Japan:)

  • This is so beautiful

  • the ultimate Onnagata. the one we call the swan in japan because no matter how the feet are moving underwater we can only see its beauty and flawlessness on the surface. tamasaburo is an incredible actor , the essence of onnagata, he dedicated its entire life to achieve this maestry yet remains unsatisfied. him and his modern counterpart Shinosuke Ikehatta (peter) are my lifetime heroes. they are untouchable

  • What is great about this clip is that one gets a close-up view of the face. Awesome, just awesome.

  • Simply sublime. A great art performed by a great artist.

  • He is a treasure. Always, I watch totally inspired.

  • He is amazing, I can feel 'ideal woman' everytime I watch his performance.

  • living oeuvre

  • what a beautiful dance and dancer. his face is so expressionate!

  • a beautiful japanese tradition!!!

  • Comment removed

  • tama-sama

  • 0:13 that just like a cgmovie, amazing

  • Pure beauty! As if from an 18th-century woodblock print.

  • I want this dvd!

  • deeply touched

    feelings greater than words

    give birth to

    tears

  • this is a lovely dance. it made feel so relaxed and sad. i looove the Japanese :)

  • Wonderful Tamasaburo performance; he´s the best onnagata ( for me), absolutly exquisit...

  • Just beyond beautiful , is been so well crafted taht the word finesse still short to describe it.

  • I am curious whether he has been salivated by hungry (male) audiences?

  • this is very beautiful and all

but im way to young to have the patience to watch all this...

  • hahaha I agree 100% hahahaha

  • First time I watch Tamasaburo, each single move remind me of a beautiful picture.

  • I love Tamasaburo; he's a great actor and absolutely beautiful.

  • Absolutely beautiful.

  • People dont know that .. she is a guy .. back then .. women were not allow to do these perfromance

  • Yes, but that was then. Now women do act in these performances, so is this specific person a male for female.

  • this particular artist is a man, he has done a lot of great work.

  • She seems so gentle and frail, and sad.

I couldn't help but watch the whole thing from beginning to end.

  • etoo he no comprendi T_T

  • the color is beautiful

  • looks just like a geisha doll i have :O

  • What is the name of this? I'm sorry, but I cannot read Japanese. Thanks so much to whoever helps.

  • bloodymissb, it is "Yukari no Tuki" off the Fuji Musume: Kabuki Dance DVD, 95 minutes long with English commentary.

Yukari no Tuki/ Yasuna/Aoi no Ue/Kane no Misaki.

    You are welcome. :)

  • That is so beautiful, and so strange. Thank you, Tiff.

  • both amazon and yesasia have his DVDs.

  • @tiffenakou Do you know the name of the DVD's? and what is YESASIA?

  • @ffmatheus yesasia is one of the vendors where you can get the DVD from. You can also try Amazon.co.jp. The DVD title is "坂東玉三郎舞踊集(6)" which is V.6 of the DVD set.

  • very beautiful,i always feel that the culture of Japan is Mysterious and Attractive

Sometimes it is difficult to accept this point emotionally

  • Wow... this is beautiful.

  • I love the hairstyle of the wig! He is such a wonderful dancer, by the way, I have seen him dance many different characters and they are all great! Thanks to whoever posted these videos! ^-^

  • this is scary

  • its a guy

  • Yes he's a man. Ignorant.

  • wow youre so cleaver.

  • T first I thought this was a painting, than she moved... Wow!!!! This is way past stunning!

  • There is a butoh dancer, Kazuo Ono-san, who held a pose for 20 minutes without moving - that is the splendour of Japanese dance.

  • she looks like a dool!!! but a cool dool!!! i love her kimono!!! ^_^

  • this is like watching 'paint dry'...

    zzzz...

  • Do you think that the paste used to whiten the face would have the same appearence on African American skin? Or would it depend on the shade or something like that?

  • The make up is opaque and would appear white regardless of the pigmentation of the skin on which it is applied. It is called Kabuki oshiroi. It is applied over a wax base (abura) to seal the pores. Oshiroi is traditionally applied on the face including the lips, parts of the neck, and hands. One mixed oshiroi with water to achieve the proper consistency and avoid crackling. This opaque white make up is used by geishas and Kabuki artists. Their traditional make up is an art in itself.

  • He is so graceful

  • I can't imagine how difficult to be so expressive with so minimal movements! There is absolutely no room to hide or cover mistakes... yet "she" looks beyond perfect from top to toe.

  • It's so delicate and sophisticated. The story of this and many other courtesans evokes a feeling of sadness in me. She doesn't look human, but a perfect creature. She's so full of emotions, however, and is unable to show them up in public. Treated just like fine and beautiful objetcs, might not love or wish for themselves and lived for others' entertainment. They were like gorgeous little birds, prisoners inside golden cages...

  • Sorry, but I got sleepy watching this.. (--,)

  • :)))))))))

then you are not like others

  • It's not for everyone but if you do pay attention, it's in the subtleness of the movements that you can discover the story.

  • Ne, is this kabuki?

  • No,this is Jiuta-Mai, the minimal art of Mai(Dance). In jiuta-Mai, a dancer has to express the deep emotion of the lyrics within the subtle movements, and must be perfectly picturesque at every moment. So, it is said that it's one of the most difficult "Mai" in Japan.

  • I think watching this live must be much more intensive....

  • I wish the artists would post their favorite pieces. I'll have to buy this CD.

  • wow i have such a better understanding of this lifestyle/artform now. thanx for posting this

  • monosugoku tanosikatta kore wo misasete itadaite domo domo. Just wonderful.

  • Is that am man???? a Onagata or what? Oh mein Gott! I never knew that a man could be so beautyfull!!! the japanese are so funny^^

  • so great!thanx

  • sorry this is boring as hell.. when does the dancing start???

  • Japanese dancing is slower, more focused on very specific subtle movements. It is highly refined.

  • Not everything has to be fast to be beautiful or interesting. Look further into something than just speed.

Unlike, what you seem to like (Salsa), Japanese dance movements are very refined and controlled, each miming an action or emotion.

  • lol salsa jojO =P

  • Magnificent artistry!

  • i can't get over the fact that this is a guy :(
