On this date in 1969 {Jan. 25th} 'Indian Giver' entered the Billboard's Top 100 chart, eventually it peaked at No. 5 and spent a total of 13 weeks in the Top 100.
LOL...a boy in my 3rd grade class brought this 45 to school on Show and Tell day! That was in the late-70s (78-79), so the record was a few years old by that time. Thank you for sharing this!

four weeks at #1 here in Hobart, Tasmania (Aust) in 1969 - possibly the best bubblegum example of the era. A band called 1910 Fruitgum Co toured Aust in 1970 about the time Go Away was released, but they were a touring band and not the players/singers of the records. I believe Mark Gutowski is lead vox, his voice is well suited to the song. The follow up '45' Special Delivery, (to the best of my knowledge) never made it to an album only an inferior (IMHO) less tough version.Mark G again shines
ryanspeed.i was born in 1953...i was a teen when bubblegum music was a little popular...the lemon pipers.with yummy yummy yummyi got love in my tummy was their hit...1910fruitgum company were the no.1 band leading the charge..simon says....123redlight....indian giver....the archies..sugar sugar...it was simple easy music i brought some 45s on bgum music it was enjoyable to hear..something new but it all sound the same thats why it didnt last to long
@09bnunez Hi. Yes, I remember all those songs. Also, Tommy Roe with Dizzy and Hooray for Hazel. Just one thing. Yummy, Yummy, Yummy was by the Ohio Express. The Lemon Pipers did Green Tambourine.
@GoBobe Yeah, that was a great one, too! There was a LOT of great bizarre stuff on Buddah flip sides!! That's one of the reasons I collect the label!! I also liked the flip of this record, "Pow Wow", which, when you play it backwards, is them singing an updated version of the Howdy Doody theme, but they sing, "Bring back, Howdy Doody", however, "Reflections From The Looking Glass" was their absolute best!
Bubblegum Pop music had its place. Sure I liked the Beatles, Stones, Doors, Hendrix, the Who, and Led Zeppelin, but I also liked Bubblegum. The Carpenters were also good; not to mention Folk, Motown, and R&B. The only music I didn't like from the period from the 1950s through the 1970s was Disco. I couldn't stand that music. haha.
@jdoucetable Yeag, a lot of people liked it, that's why it was so popular for a short time. It just wasn't my cup of tea. The one I couldn't stand the most was Barry White.
@DominickFontana I hate Barry White too, but he isn't disco, he's soul/r&b, the only song of his that is minimal of being disco is Love's Theme. But yeah, since disco died hip hop came along and now my generation's music sucks. I would've rather kept disco than what became after.
@jdoucetable Well, we'll have to agree to disagree on that. To me, Barry White was quintessentail disco music. Yes, he was a little bit crossover, but they always played him in the Discos. He is always voted one of the top Disco artists. Even though he had the deep voice, the Love Unlimited Orchestra played Disco Music behind him and people danced to it. But, at least we agree we don't like him.
@DominickFontana Bubblegum Pop is so fun to listen to too....it also goes great with ultra-violence. Just ask Scorsese, Anger, Depalma, Chase and Tarantino.
@DominickFontana Short-lived??? You MUST be joking!! It's still going today, they just don't call it disco. Trance, or techno, or some other name, but it's still disco.
@RedVynil Why don't you learn how to read. MrRaiderFan said said the Stones, David Bowie, and Rod Stewart, who were Rock artists, did some Disco-type songs in the '70s. I responded that those artists doing Disco-type songs was short-lived, and then they stopped doing that and went back to Rock.
@DominickFontana Learn how to write! You said IT was short-lived!! How was I supposed to know you were talking about just those few bands and not disco in general??
@RedVynil If you follow the thread above, MrRaiderfan wrote something to me and then I responded to him. His message is directly above mine. I was responding to his comments.
@DominickFontana Yep, I saw it, but, that still leaves the reader thinking you meant disco itself. To allude to those bands, you should've said, "Their time of doing disco was short-lived."
@RedVynil I Disagree. It seems pretty clear to me that I was responding to him about the acts he mentioned.
However, since you brought it up, I do think Disco music itself was short-lived. It has influenced some of today's music, but the height of Disco popularity was about 5 years from the mid to late '70s.
On July 21, 1979, the top six records on the U.S. music charts were disco songs. By September 22, two months later, there were no disco songs in the US Top 10 chart.
@DominickFontana 1st issue: if that's the way you want to look at it...but I've done a LOT of reading and writing, people tell me I'm a great writer, and, the way you laid it out, it looks the way I said it.
2nd: disco sucks, no question about that. but, it depends upon what you consider disco. I once had a guitarist in my band that thought King Crimson's "Discipline" album was disco!! He was getting that from Bill's bass drum. Okay, it's steady, but it's not disco.
@DominickFontana ...late `74 / early `75. The first time I ever saw anybody do the bump was in high school at that time. Can't recall what the song was, but disco, itself, ran well into the `80's. Today, forms of disco are still being done. Basically, as long as the drums are constantly going boom tic boom tic boom tic, that's disco. Especially with the trap cymbals pea souping all over the place: pea soup pea soup pea soup, get it? Today, they just play that rhythm a lot faster.
This might be bubblegum, but it's nice to remember! This song charted on Billboard's Hot 100 list on 1/25/69 peaked at #5 and was on the list 13 weeks! Oh yeah, it sold a million copies, one of which is mine.
This is one the greatest little lost pop gems of all time. It's a good thing they put it out before the politically correct bullshit police stepped in to control our speech. By the way after learning how badly our government and calvary treated the Indians now when I see an old cowboy and Indian's movie I root for the Indians. Peace.
@whopfrog2 That's right, it was one of hundreds of break-in records made since the `50's to this very day! The Vic Venus records used songs that were on Buddah. There was one on Motown that only used Motown hits. Certain labels did that so they couldn't get sued for using other labels' records.
@supercaligfragilisti It wasn't a song, it was the pseudonym of an artist who made two break-in records on Buddah back in the late `60's. One record had him listed as Vic Venus, the other was Vik Venus, but he was a N. Y. radio dj that just died about a year ago. I don't remember his real name.
In 1969 I was spending the summer with my grandmother in Mount Carmel Pa. I recall the whole town going crazy when a rock band showed up to perform on Main street. I am resonably certain it was this song. I will assume that the 1910 Fruitgum company had invaded this small coal mining town if my memory is correct.
I wish only to respond to the controversy, concerning political correctness, and add that the term 'indian giver' is most likely a confused term. Considering the trading practices by groups at the time, given that both groups may not have understood eachothers practices, it would seem any resentment, be it white or native american, is likely a result of that confusion. I would be concerned that the term perpetuates resentment but whatever..I doubt that bubble gum pop will be the 'deal-breaker'.
I could have sworn that the original "Indian Giver" had the "warpath" sound inside the record at the beginning and about 2 minutes in. You cannot find it in ANY of the songs here on YT....except the LIVE performance by "1910" where it is done at the beginning. (Look on the side menu since YT won't let me post the link....)
Something tells me they wouldn't be able to get away with that album cover nowadays. lol Great stuff! I would LOVE to hear "Special Delivery." I had the 45 but alas, I can't find it anywhere. : (
i've talked about this band with to many people that don't know who they are. Obviously they grew up in cave. Either that or they were tp high to care. I love this band along with the Archies. They kind of go together.
Thanx for posting - I had no idea it was this group who did this as I see their band name quite a bit as a 60's "sunshine" group. The Ramones did this song as a single around the time of "Too tough to die"
We lived in small town Morgan City, LA. My mamma had to drive all the way to Franklin to find the 45 because they didn't have it in MC. We LOVED this record. Thank you for posting it!
@60otaku3 - Otaku-san, yes, that's right. Back in those days, 2 or 3 groups with different names were actually the same people. Here, it is 1910 Fruitgum Company and Ohio Express. Also, my favorite example was in 1969, when Ron Dante sang lead vocals on "Sugar Sugar" (with the Archies) and "Tracy" (with the Cuff-Links). And those 2 songs were on the charts at the same time.
@zapple100 Yeah, they are, but their very collectible pieces. I have `em both. In fact, I've got 2 copies of "Two Virgins" and I got `em both a few years ago for $15.00 @! In a way, it's a good thing I took both copies, because one is pressed slightly off-center on side one and the other on side two! So, between the two of them, I have at least one good copy. I've also got a Harry Nilsson / Ringo Starr soundtrack album on Rapple. It's from the movie they did together called, "Son Of Dracula".
one of my favorite songs from pre teen years. It's a shame this is considered un pc now because i like the song itself, its sound and groove for its time.
Joey Ramone was a huge fan of "Bubblegum Music" and supposedly adored 1910 Fruitgum Co. In the early 80's, the Ramones covered this song and it is done so well! (albeit much faster, of course) If you like this original, try finding the Ramones' version and see what you think.
@IndisputableAttitude Okay, gotcha. I dood a booboo. I just checked "The Great Rock Dicography" and it DOES have that song by The Sweet on their, "Off The Record", album from March `77. And, they actually started recording July `68! I never heard of them until "Little Willy" came out in the early `70's.
Man you are all to negative I'm gonna go listen to some Edison lighthouse,or the Fruggs ro some thing just a little less contraversial.MAN whata buncha.........why back in my day ...............cinacina....razzafrazza......grumble....mumble.......YOU CAN ALL GO TO HELL!!!!!!!!
The lyric might not be very PC 40 years on, but bubblegum ain't what it was. In today's karaoke infested crud, the 1910 Fruit Gum Co. shines out like a fabulous jewel.
Oh Lord! The social intolerance of the 1910 Fruitgum Company! If anything requires intense sociological discussion and historical debate, it's probably this (outstanding) retarded bubblegum track from 1969 and it's massive impact on modern music and thinking.
it never amazes me how stupid some people can be and lets never hang out you are stupid. for one thing american aborigine or native american should never have been called an indian and it's an insult for you to refer to them that way. Idiot.
Hey clown . . . the native Acoma pueblo indians of the southwest DO refer to themselves as INDIANS! Seems that your really just another liberal PC idiot!
P.S. - Yes, I do know some of the indians I speak of . . .
I used the term "Indian Giver" at work the other day, and the guy said he'd have the boss write me up if I said it again. What a dick. I think he was joking though.
Fuck that mindbox of Political Correctness. If I want to say, "nigger" I'm going to do it. They've only climbed down from the trees just a few hundred years ago, you know.
Are you for real - the Natives DID NOT give away their land - it was STOLEN - and they were put on pieces of arid good for nothing land called reserves...
If someone put out a cover like that today, they'd be ripped to pieces.

@whopfrog2 That's right, it was one of hundreds of break-in records made since the `50's to this very day! The Vic Venus records used songs that were on Buddah. There was one on Motown that only used Motown hits. Certain labels did that so they couldn't get sued for using other labels' records.
RedVynil 1 week ago
@supercaligfragilisti It wasn't a song, it was the pseudonym of an artist who made two break-in records on Buddah back in the late `60's. One record had him listed as Vic Venus, the other was Vik Venus, but he was a N. Y. radio dj that just died about a year ago. I don't remember his real name.

@oldstumpcutter A used record store. I think I got mine at Jerry's about 10 or 20 years ago. Or, just try looking online at eBay, etc.

Love this song and genre. I wonder if this song would be considered politically incorrect these days?

I think that this pop song did not have any problem politically in those days.

I would be concerned that the term perpetuates resentment but whatever..I doubt that bubble gum pop will be the 'deal-breaker'.

i really like this song i herd it on the raido why in my car and i love it!
sabbyluvs80s 1 year ago
I could have sworn that the original "Indian Giver" had the "warpath" sound inside the record at the beginning and about 2 minutes in. You cannot find it in ANY of the songs here on YT....except the LIVE performance by "1910" where it is done at the beginning. (Look on the side menu since YT won't let me post the link....)
Political correctness run rampant!!!

i've talked about this band with to many people that don't know who they are.

Is the guy singing lead here the same guy who sang lead on "Simon Says" and "1-2-3 Red Light?"
zapple100 1 year ago
Yes, the lead singer is Mark Gutkowski.
Perhaps he's singing most hit songs of this bubblegum pop band.

@zapple100 Yes.
Do you have both albums that were released on Zapple?
RedVynil 1 week ago
@RedVynil No. They're too weird for me.
zapple100 5 days ago
@zapple100 Yeah, they are, but their very collectible pieces. I have `em both. In fact, I've got 2 copies of "Two Virgins" and I got `em both a few years ago for $15.00 @! In a way, it's a good thing I took both copies, because one is pressed slightly off-center on side one and the other on side two! So, between the two of them, I have at least one good copy. I've also got a Harry Nilsson / Ringo Starr soundtrack album on Rapple. It's from the movie they did together called, "Son Of Dracula".

Joey Ramone was a huge fan of "Bubblegum Music" and supposedly adored 1910 Fruitgum Co. In the early 80's, the Ramones covered this song and it is done so well! (albeit much faster, of course) If you like this original, try finding the Ramones' version and see what you think.
librabonze 1 year ago
I heard the Ramones version, and then went here. It's amazing how many of my favorite songs turned out to be covers of someone else's.
The Meatmen did "Live for Today" originally done by The Sweet.
Klaus Nomi did "You don't own me" originally done by Leslie Gore
And a real shocker "Hey Micky" by Toni Basil was originally by Racey and called "Hey Kitty".
Gotta love Youtube and all these great uploads.
Keep on rockin'!

@IndisputableAttitude No, "Live For Today" was The Grass Roots. The Sweet didn't start recording until `70 or so.

@RedVynil Two different songs with very similar titles. Check out the Sweet version. It's one of my faves.
IndisputableAttitude 1 week ago
@IndisputableAttitude Okay, gotcha. I dood a booboo. I just checked "The Great Rock Dicography" and it DOES have that song by The Sweet on their, "Off The Record", album from March `77. And, they actually started recording July `68! I never heard of them until "Little Willy" came out in the early `70's.

Idiot.
