Ashanti deserves this award in everyway, you cant compare her and aaliyah they are both great and wonderful singers but different in many ways, ashanti did it that year what no one has done yet to date so she got what was rightly given to her, aaliyah is a wonderful singer and she is and will always be missed, but this was current and she wasnt in the game anymore so u cant compare these 2 thats just childish, ashanti stay up and aaliyah R.I.P still miss you =-)

No that's not true. Tweet,Brandy,Alicia Keys,Britney Spears,Pink,Avril Lavinge, Kelly Rowland and Amerie were all competion for Ashanti but she just managed to beat them all. It's not Ashanti's fault she was so successful that year. People were really feeling her and whether Aaliyah was alive or not Ashanti still would have been big that year. Aaliyah's singles from her 3rd album didnt perform well UNTIL she died. Which means people didnt care about her until she passed!

There was controversy about Ashanti winning this award. Fans starting protesting and asked why the Late Aaliyah did not win the award. Even though I felt like Aaliyah would of been a better candidate I am still very happy for Ashanti

This is true. About 30,000 people signed the petition saying she didnt deserve it. People were saying mean things about her too but she still got up there with style and grace and did her thing. I think Aaliyah would have been a GREAT recepient but NO OTHER FEMALE ARTIST matched what Ashanti did in 2002 so she was very deserving of the award!
