Awesome! Black bears are generally very shy animals, and will run away once they see a human. The time they don't, is when you have food on them. Don't carry food with you on your hikes, and you won't have a problem.

Dude I'm in NH on vacation and I got one just outside the back door from where I'm sleeping! I stepped out for a smoke at 2am and the sucker came right out of the treeline. I thought they'd be in hibernation but we've had a lot of fairly warm weather lately. YIKES!

That's funny. Our friend Dennis lives down the road towards Jewett, says the same thing about her being more scared... for a local maybe yes...for me, I was definitely more scared, I have never seen one in the wild. and I always told everyone not to worry, "they're more afraid of you"...bullsh#%!... my heart was pounding out of my chest, every hair was on end, I was dripping with sweat, it was intense for me. Best day ever.

yea well when i made my comment i didnt realize it was a mother with cubs lol that changes things over, to you/me being more scared, but if a bear is alone and not cornered you could usually chase it away, but dont try :)

@gscevoli lol, that was a great clip--you could really feel your anxiety. I've been surprised by a bear or two and it does always get your heart pounding! Easiest to laugh about it later.
