They don't exactly react to pain and injury the same way people do, and have very thick skulls covering very small, simple brains, you can't exactly knock out an animal very easily.

This was actually a real gorilla used on the set for 'The Invincible' They taught the beast a few somersaults and injected him with agent orange for that extra dramatic effect during the shot. unorthodox methods these kung fu filmakers have..
