This video proves just how little the Skype developer team understands Mac users.
The new UI is rubbish - it doesn't matter that you think it's cool - it's bloated, it lacks the functionality of the previous version and is not as easy to use. How is that a win for the Skype design team?
Fix Skype or you'll lose your user-base ... Mac users don't f#$k around.
For all the users disliking Skype 5.0 - let the Skype team know what a crap job they've done. Reverting to 2.8.
5.0 UI is not very good. The design is more like iTunes and less like iChat. Chat software interfaces should be compact and minimalist. They should also be modular and efficient with their space. Version 2.8 was much better than 5.0 on all counts. If you are going to follow Mac UI conventions, make sure you know why you are copying a UI layout.
The only good new feature is the conference video calling but the new design is Crap and you have to do so much scrolling and now so much searching just to get a contact on the old 2.8 is was so much easier to use as the contact page the icons and stuff where a good size . Another thing is the video calling on the 5.0 is now like the PC version you can't just have it floating on your screen so you can do other things like on 2.8 which was awesome so you don't have to be on one screen for video
I wonder in which world these people live in when they think the new UI is "friendlier"! If by friendlier they mean, space wasteful, lack of customization, chat history advertising to anyone in a 5 meter radius and disabling multitasking capability (i.e video chatting with someone, while texting someone else) then congratulations, you have succeeded in creating a friendlier UI.

PinayStarz - I am having the same issue. I'm running OS X 10.4.11. A few minutes ago my "old" skype was fine. Now I can't access it because it's not compatible with my operating system. Suggestions, anyone?
Love the 5.0 for MAC EXCEPT ... where is screenshare?? I miss it. I thought it used to be hidden under the 2nd button on upper right corner. Can not find it anymore. I miss it muchly. It's a great help for one on one teaching this an that. But if I have to go backwards to previous version to get screen sharing, looks like I have to. Screen share in very important to me. Please get it in here. Other than that, I love the new version

i am still using V2.8 the lay out of that one is much better and you can find stuff faster and better the only thing i liked about v5.0 is the push to talk

My biggest headdesk moment was when they said you need to hold down four keys (with two hands) in push-to-talk mode. How is that friendly? I certainly hope the shortcut is modifiable and/or reconsidered.
@SlightlyAmiss It has nothing to do with Latin. Beta is a letter of the Greek alphabet. This is an issue of American/British English. Greek pronunciation = vita. American English pronunciation = béta. British English pronunciation = beeta.
the new UI for skype 5 is pretty hideous, and annoying. big, clunky layout, text way too big, every line has way too much padding, impossible to shrink it down. part of what makes the current non-beta great is that I can stick it in the corner and get on with the rest of what I'm doing. as it is it feels as though I'm reading one of those large-type books for people with poor eyesight.
Sorry but this new update design/setup is horrible, unorganized, messy and I only used it for 5 minutes before removing it and going back to 2.8. Please stick contacts separated from chat boxes, don't make it like the windows how everything is in one huge box, yahoo messenger, aol and msn isn't as good as skype but at least they have contacts in one and chats in another box
I don't like the new skype put all the new features in the old version! I like everything in separate windows. And why is the dial pad separate? That doesn't make sense... It's not like it's a big problem though. One thing I do like with the new skype is the small smoke window in the top right hand corner when you're on a call; that's a big improvement
@rolandsquare One other thing i'd like is a collapsible view for all the conversation history in the side bar, but that's just be being anal and liking things looking neat

Biggest problem with the new Beta? Name recognition.
Haven't tried it, but the window looks too big. I like having my skype window small, because it shares my screen with two other messengers and a browser. Additionally, I like being able to videochat and message people at the same time. This looks like it doesn't make that easy. I have a couple friends with webcams but no working mic, so this would make things difficult.
I find it hard to go from video to IM and then back find it all really annoying but desperate to use the video conf capability.....please fix this guys
the old skype window is so much better. i liked haveing the contact list and call and chat seperate. its so much easier. Also, between the IMs their is so much space. I dont like this new design, and why would you change the button positions? people are used to the old ones not these. I can't find alot of them so i switched back. skype should be easy not a chore to use.
So far, I'm not experiencing too many problems with the new version of Skype, with the exception of not linking your Skype account to your Facebook account and you can't seperate your chat window from the contacts window. And since this is only the beta version, I'm sure what other problems this version has will be fixed in the finished version. So, in all honesty, there's no reason to overreact about all these changes, no matter how small they are.

one capability i enjoyed a lot in 2.x was lost in this transition: you can no longer tell whether a contact is at a computer or on another kind of device. i dislike calling anyone whose skype account is logged in ro any mobile gizmo. the old version showed a camera icon next to the contact name to signify that (s)he was at a computer; no icon when the contact was on a gizmo. convenient!

Come on. The new version is a huge waste or screen real estate. It is too big even on my 27" display. You don't really think the new UI is a good improvement? Right, Skype folks? Why is there all the wasted white area in the contacts list? The window on v5 is HUGE (in terrible way). The condensed smaller contacts list in the previous version (2.8?) is much better.

the new window is definitely NOT mac-like; it i can't be mac-like if you have one overwhelming window, fully pact with unnecessary functions (like adressbook features en masse) which, as i believe, the most users don't use and never will.
now, if skype is really going to let us use a windows clone version on a mac, i will definitely start using facetime and forget about skype!
You see, I 1st started using Skype on my mac. I loved the interface as it was (simple and minimalistic). One time I had to use skype on Windows on another machine. The feeling was that the interface on windows was not good at all (unnecessary visual complexity and "not peace of mind". Different from the feeling a mac gives). Now the Skype Beta 5 offers similar interface like the windows version have. (ps. I am using computers for 25 years and I've seen a lot of program GUI's)
Just tried the beta on my mac Pro and restored the old one from the time machine two minutes after the installation of the beta. It is working great, but It is unnecessary taking "big" part of the screen. Everything is so big. Please, make it more minimalistic and small as the previous UI was. At least give the option to mac users to have exactly the previous interface. Also I like more to have separated windows for every chat and also have an option to have them all together.
In the developer Forums I once requested to be able to hide your own video chat picture. (takes up space, some people don't need/want to see their own picture/might even save some CPU cycles)

- The whole skype window takes more then HALF of my whole screen and fills it with utterly stupid and useless white space. The Contact and chat view have about 1cm space in between EVERY message/contact..
(No, larger things don't mean it's easier to read or use. And NO the text resizing (implemented in a really clumsy way btw) is not making anything better.)
- people have WIDEscreen monitors nowadays. So why is the chat displayed UNDER the video?

1) you have to see more than 8-11 contacts when u open the program
2) put option "all contacts" so they can be seen on the left side,not at the center
3) option to separate windows (chat) and (contacts)
4) keep the idea with "drawer" is best for history
5) awful amount of useless space - why are they so big empty spots
6) NOBODY and i repeat NOBODY needs big open window on their screen
7) on chat there is 80% useless space ? TELL ME WHY ?

I don't like the new skype put all the new features in the old version! I like everything in separate windows. And why is the dial pad separate? That doesn't make sense... 1) I want screen sharing. Don't see it in 5.0. If not there, I will drop Skype.

Why is there all the wasted white area in the contacts list? The window on v5 is HUGE (in terrible way). The condensed smaller contacts list in the previous version (2.8?) is much better.

In my opinion the new design is horrible, the old design was fine, it was simple and minimalistic while this new version just wastes space.
All I wanted from skype was the group calling feature not an all new UI

madseeds you are speaking out of my mind; now we have the same disgusting window layout like in windows.
the new window is definitely NOT mac-like; it i can't be mac-like if you have one overwhelming window, fully pact with unnecessary functions (like adressbook features en masse) which, as i believe, the most users don't use and never will.
now, if skype is really going to let us use a windows clone version on a mac, i will definitely start using facetime and forget about skype!

You see, I 1st started using Skype on my mac. I loved the interface as it was (simple and minimalistic). One time I had to use skype on Windows on another machine. The feeling was that the interface on windows was not good at all (unnecessary visual complexity and "not peace of mind". Different from the feeling a mac gives). Now the Skype Beta 5 offers similar interface like the windows version have. (ps. I am using computers for 25 years and I've seen a lot of program GUI's)

Just tried the beta on my mac Pro and restored the old one from the time machine two minutes after the installation of the beta. It is working great, but It is unnecessary taking "big" part of the screen. Everything is so big. Please, make it more minimalistic and small as the previous UI was. At least give the option to mac users to have exactly the previous interface. Also I like more to have separated windows for every chat and also have an option to have them all together.

When i click on "check for updates" within Skype it tells me it is up to date though I have not updated. How can that be?

if Skype is the only application you use, interface is just wonderful.
Otherwise this is probably one of the worst interfaces on Mac ever

In the developer Forums I once requested to be able to hide your own video chat picture. (takes up space, some people don't need/want to see their own picture/might even save some CPU cycles)

WTF? Now You're able to resize, scale it up to infinity (>opposite's video??)
And worse: move it UNDER the Control Bar, just to not be able to move/"touch" it anymore? Are you kidding?

- Still 80% CPU usage while video chatting.
- The whole skype window takes more then HALF of my whole screen and fills it with utterly stupid and useless white space. The Contact and chat view have about 1cm space in between EVERY message/contact..
(No, larger things don't mean it's easier to read or use. And NO the text resizing (implemented in a really clumsy way btw) is not making anything better.)
- people have WIDEscreen monitors nowadays. So why is the chat displayed UNDER the video?
