  • Does this work if you have electronic ignition. i literally just figured out i had this. PLEASE HELP

  • @TheDozens4 Any luck finding the answer?

  • @brighteyefilms I just did what this video said and it worked! My car starts fine! but now im idling REALLY low and its misfiring all over the place and now everything else seems wrong.... what do i do!? please respond ASAP!

  • @TheDozens4 Sounds like your plug wires are on the wrong parts of the cap.

  • if after you do all this and you turn your engine over and it idles but it intermitenly pops out of the exaust what else needs t =o be checked or rechecked.

  • @PAMAROSHOUSE Timing, carb

  • @brighteyefilms thank you chris i also found one side of my intake was loose possibly sucking in extra air .i will do the timing and carb also

  • Great video buddy! Cheers.

  • im trying this tomorrow on my conv 67ghia.ive been setting it a tdc w, a 009 dizzy.i will try 7.5 hope it works.

  • @brighteyefilms i have a 1915cc, 009 distributor. I was kind of guessing what the clicking noise was. Its how some military vehicles click over to get the electrical system ready. Sorry that's the only thing i know how to compare it to. Anyway, my bug never shows the 2 lights for "accessory on" only 1 light, then the engine will turn over past that.

  • I'm having a problem setting the timing. I think it may be because my bug doesn't really have an accessory on key placement. As soon as you turn the key a little bit it starts to click. I'm pretty sure it's the electronic fuel pump, could be wrong though. Anyway I can't get the circuit to complete and make the light come on. I just had to kind of guess by watching the belt run and adjust that way.

  • @joeylk4d4 The issues you have really are not related to one another, fuel pump to timing?? Doesn't sound right. What motor do you have in there? Distributor?

  • on my 68 with vac adv my number 1 is the where urs with out it is, i followed my wire checked the valves to confirm and as part of the tune up im doin cause its running crappy at the moment. i when i do wat u do to adjust the timing i only get a quick flicker of the light, i doesnt stay on in any spot, so ibout another test light and get the same thing so i was guessing that thats the spot i want it for my timing?

  • I did this! It works....awesome...great explanation and demo

  • How can I test for a good/bad distributor (1300 beetle)? Dwell/tach meter?

  • @oceancity724 get a timing light and see if it advances correctly or not.

  • thanks man this worked for me

  • Is it odd if I used this VW Bug timing for my Honda and it worked?

  • Okay I have a (Q) I changed my oil, spark plugs and ajusted the valves , on my 1966 vw bug, it turns on good it toons pritty smooth it's a oil shaky but won't turn off how do I know if I did it righ? I just gotthe bug about a month ago ad I followed these vid on how to do it, can some one let me know maybe how to tell if the valves are wrongly adjusted or the timing? How is a vw bug engine suppose to sound?

  • @AMRIE21 If you look under his videos, he has two videos (part 1 and part 2) on how to adjust your valves.

    Good luck with the beetle!

  • i have a weird distributer. i opened it up and i guess the points are electric. so do i still set the timing the same or? i dont even know if its the timing. sometimes it dies at idle and pings when taking off, sometimes it acts fine. im so lost right now.

  • Hello from Texas; my 73 super seems to want to run either right side or left side it even bacfired and ran backwards. Have you ever seen that before? What would you suggest? I've tried setting the timing all the way around the distributor in 1432 time. I have an 009 with no vac. It starts easy enough. Has new wires di cap and rotor points and coil. Thanks

  • Nice video. Thought you might like to know that there will be a line across the rim of the body of the distributor, (the face against which the cap fits). When the rotor arm is pointing to this line is indicates that cyl 1 is on compression. This holds true for the Bosch distributors and the shorter VW distributors, with or without a vacuum advance.

  • good information thanks for the video

  • Great Video! Thanks for sharing.

  • I've tried to time it with this method, but the bulb on my test light keeps blowing out every time I try, why is this happening?

  • @diegowolfwood thats weird, you may have a ground problem somewhere.

  • @brighteyefilms

Found out why, what I had was a continuity tester, wrong tool....guy at AutoZoen sold me the wrong thing.

  • amazing video thanks for sharing im going too try this later this week on my bug

  • Would this also work with another vehicle like an rx7?

  • more pep, HELL YAH!!

  • Is it possible that the dist could be put in backward because the positioning of mine dosnt look like yours but the light comes on. So I turned it around to about the Same position as yours and the light comes on there to could u please help me with this I just don't want to harm my engine! Thanks

  • Thanks man this was so helpful with timing my buggy! Thank you!

  • Thank you your videos are really helping me with my bug

  • Why do you have to set timing and how often should I do it?

  • @MrOeric0 Your engine will not fire right or run efficiently if you do not set it. I always check the timing during my routine tune ups.

  • what kinda distributor is the "short stubby distributor"? the vacuum advanced ones??

  • @ironmaiden906 yeah all the shorties have the vacuum on them. But tall ones have them too.

  • chris, would this cause it to use more gas or smell like gas if my beetle is not timed right? i been looking through all your videos and they been helping me out but still havent found my problem, but thanks :)

  • @YvJr Well you could have a small gas leak? Or your carby is running rich. If you advance the timing too much it can burn more gas, sure.

  • sup chris i wanted to know about the vacuum wat does it exactly do and wat doess the condenser do how do i know if its not working thanks

  • @thadrive16 You will know when they are not working right, the vacs are for the advance between the distributor and carb. Condenser goes along with the points to coil. You will know if they are not working correctly when the car spits, bucks, loses power etc. Never really have much issue with the vacs unless one of their connectors is off the carb. And when you change your points, you want to change your condenser as well.

  • So if I were to be running a 1600 based 1835 with Empi 009 distributor would I still follow the 7 1/2 degree rule for base timing? Everyone keeps giving me conflicting information on this motor...

  • @Muddy79Ford I wouldn't see why not.

  • tip of the day..:)

  • This is simple only when you know what you are doing! The video helps a great deal, but for the most part you should take your car to get it timed and tuned by a professional so it will last you a good long time. Chris, at Classic VW Bugs, has tuned and rebuilt a few hundred bugs by now. He knows about Bugs like the Pope knows the Bible...

  • 0:54 no fuel filters in the engine bay!

  • @thejustingolembiesky nah they are fine

  • have you got a video on engine rebuilding? the big end has gone on my 67. i'd bring it to you but im too far away! lol

  • @jabbayashmak I would not be able to put up a video on engine rebuilding unless it would be in several chapters. That is more of a DVD type how to. Check the "bug me video" series they have an engine rebuild dvd.

  • so would this timing spec still be the same if i have a ignition module and my plugs are gaped to 35? also a hi volt coil 40,000

  • @ZONER4201 not sure, I would check for your specs. My timing is for stock setup

  • great video

  • Just wanted to say thanks for this tip man! I just did it and it worked flawlessly.

  • @Kbrusky15 awesome man!

  • Basically if you dont have the test light u turn the distributor and when u see the spark on the contact point..am i right?thats how i do it becoz i dont have a test light
