This is the first Castlevania game I ever played and it is still my favorite Castlevania game. I swear every piece of music in it is forever ingrained in my brain. Not that I have a problem with that of course...
@jeffbrister2004 I remember being a kid and feeling stunned when I realized that I actually was going to beat Dracula. I called two of my cousins over to witness it so they wouldn't think I was just making it up!
Hey everybody! I have released my new album 'Progenitor' which has electronic music inspired by great games such as the Castlevania series. You can check it out and download it for free on my youtube channel if you're interested!
The names come from the soundtest (hold down A + B + Select, then hit start, at the title screen), so they should all be correct. I passed on naming them "Level 1", "Level 2", etc, because that depends on the path you take.
I did a quick but careful comparison, by isolating all the other channels and only listening to noise + DPCM from both soundtracks. The both use standard DPCM and noise for the drums. Two things make them sound different- the noise is used differently. You have much more sloshy, loud open hi-hat sound in the JP version. The US version I think uses mostly the same samples but only truncated to save room. The samples sound bigger in the JP version because you get to hear 'more'.
what are you talking about the japanese version is way better cause of the FM synthesizer. You're just ignorant because of your huge nostalgia boner for this game.
To each their own, I say. I made it easy to compare the different versions because I find it pretty interesting. :) Some I like more with the VRC6, some I don't...
But for clarification, there is no FM synthesis in the Japanese version. It has 2 additional pulse waves (with more duty cycles available), and 1 sawtooth wave.
That one is still better, it just sounds fuller and a lot nicer. A lot of the songs from Simon's Quest are better on the NES than they are on the FDS though.
I do feel a nostalgic attachment to the American version of Castlevania 3, but I have to admit that the Japanese version is far superior in the audio department.

The graphics of modern games may have gotten better, but as far as game play music goes, these old school games are still the best.
Castlevania
Double Dragon
Ninja Gaiden
Etc
Best soundtracks ever.
