Col. Timothy J. Geraghty, Commander, Marines in Beirut during the incident, said that "The Marine headquarters were targeted because the US provided direct naval gunfire support -- which I strongly opposed for a week -- to the Lebanese Army at a mountain village called Suq-al-Garb on September 19. American support removed any lingering doubts of our neutrality, and I stated to my staff at the time that we were going to pay in blood for this decision.
Ronald Reagan, 1 month before, ordered a gun barrage against one side of this muti-sided war. That is called picking a side. That’s not something your supposed to do when your a peace keeping force. That makes you an allied force of one side. This now creates a problem with people calling this a terrorisim. Due to the fact that if one enemy army attacks another enemy army even if they used guerrilla tactics they call it an enemy assault, not a Terrorist attack. Just sayin', these are the facts.
US was clueless about Beirut - according to Thomas Friedman book "From Beirut to Jerusalem". They went there basically to help Israel prop up the corrupt Lebanese Christian govt of Pres. Gemayel who was fighting against the Druse-Syrian-Palestinian forces for control of Lebanon. I dunno what the US was thinking - maybe they thought they were badasses but Beirut was a lot worse than Vietnam - and the US lost in Vietnam. USMC was attacked cuz US Navy shelled the Muslim forces the month before.
@mkl62 Your an idiot. The Marines went back home with their tale between their legs after that for your information. And the group responsible for the bombing is still there and more powerful than ever. Pax America is over buddy.
@spenglerX Well, Khadafy got a taste of some good ol' American justice. You don't hear anything out of him anymore. And Saddam is history. On a personal note, I served in the Navy from 1986-1990 on the USS America. My last CO was Capt. John Mazach, who led the raid over Lebanon when Lange was killed. Also, Bobby Goodman served on board the America, but kept a low profile.
All I know is that if I was that Battalion Commander I would have either been allowed to defend my Marines or I would be an ex-Battalion Commander. The ROE's we had to follow in Beirut were ridiculous, and SO unfair to the young Americans who were left defenseless in a very dangerous part of the world. We were there simply as Peace Keepers. There was no "secret agenda" to our presence in Lebanon. We will never forget you guys. Semper Fi
@randy95023 You know, if you study the history, you will realize you could have not done anything there. If you tried to defend yourselves, you still would have been attacked. 650 IDF soldiers died there, you think you would have done better? You simply did not understand what was going on in that place. To "defend yourself" meant you would have used overwhelming force and that would have meant civilian deaths which was against your mission in the first place.

The real reason why it happend:
Col. Timothy J. Geraghty, Commander, Marines in Beirut during the incident, said that "The Marine headquarters were targeted because the US provided direct naval gunfire support -- which I strongly opposed for a week -- to the Lebanese Army at a mountain village called Suq-al-Garb on September 19. The End
