It is called a PCAS. A pretty cool little device actually. It picks up the transponder signals from other aircraft up to 5 miles away and alerts me if they are within a certain altitude and distance from me. It does not send out an interrogation but it uses the local ground radar signal. A must have if you are flying around busy airspace like where I fly.
I was flying out of Cedar Valley airport. If you have not tried flying out of there yet it is worth it. Don't be worried about the gravel runway. The great cross country potential and friendly people at the airport make up for it. :)

Sounds like something we in europe could use, with all the transponder issues we have here.
