Beats can sound good when using keyboards if you play the parts with some heart instead of just tapping them out like someone who's just started taking lessons. Even when sampling you got to chose parts of a song that really speak with musical passion. Nothing wrong with either technique as long as it's done right. This man here knows his stuff, that's why his beats are bangin out some serious dope. You can also use both together when making a beat, but the blend better be good or it don't work.

I think Hip Hop fell off when people stopped sampling as much. Yeah you're right, there are a lot of fellas out there that make weak ass beats from scratch but there are others that make real good stuff. the whole getting away from samples was a movement to prove that hip hop artist can actually compose something with using sampling. my philosophy is "use what works." If you sample, make it pop. If you don't sample, make it rock.
